The ball skyed off the mid dle finger of my right hand, sound ing a cracking noise that eventual ly landed me in the seat of my couch at home. Sunday, after a long hiatus from the sport, I had the opportunity to return to the hardwood in the Lady Buckeyes' St. John Arena. My press row seat less than a foot off the edge of the court, kept me on the edge of my seat. In the first half of the Lady Lion 72-69 win, Tina Nicholson hurled the ball back and forth to her team mates who were looking to pene trate Ohio State's fierce defense. The shot clock was ticking away. The likes of Lady Bucks Katie Smith and Adrienne Johnson refused to budge. Finally, the point guard tossed a high pass to 5-foot-8 Tiffany Long worth that I thought would trail over her reaching fingertips and careen into me. Longworth leaped, saved the ball from finding my unsuspecting face and saved me from making a com plete fool of myself in front of a 9,000-plus crowd. If such a mishap had occurred, I'm sure the referees would have been forced to call a timeout to resuscitate the reporter in the front row with "NCAA" imprinted on her forehead. Just as I escaped this potentially embarrassing situation, Penn State was lucky to escape this unknown territory with a win, as scarlet-and white-clad hecklers filling the stands showed them the true value of home-court advantage. They argued with the referees, taunted visiting players and mocked coach Rene Portland. One man hollered, "How many concussions do you want Rene?" g 7 co miD o a In The Bleachers by Steve Moore s 1... Still, I was surprised at his audacity. I was too shocked to turn away from the game and pinpoint that particu lar spectator. However, it would have been dif ficult to find him since so many people were on their feet, voicing comparable concerns. Mike Duda, a 1991 graduate of Ohio State, stood for most of the game in front of his red seat, which was directly behind my spot on the floor. He was too outraged to sit. Outraged by the 19 fouls called on his Lady Buckeyes. Outraged by the Lady Lions' nerve to stay one step ahead of his team. But certainly not outraged by a lack of fan support. "This game definitely had a heightened level of excitement," said Duda, who donned a white Ohio State hat, a gray shirt, black jeans and a red belt. "You get that sixth player involved -- the fans and it gets really loud in here." Duda's shrieks were certainly the loudest when he urged the ref eree to call three-second violations on number 52, Julie Jarosz for what seemed like 52 times. He des perately wanted the call, but the referees never appeased him. He sought any call that would save his Lady Bucks, who stayed within 10 It's no use! Save yourselves! "Let's go Bucks" and "O -H-I-O" cheers roared. The growing decibel level was consuming enough to break the focus of Nicholson who found herself at the free-throw line to shoot a one and one with 27 sec onds left in the game. The Lady Lions led by two and needed these shots. Just when it seemed the roars couldn't get any louder, the noise level continued to climb. Hands waved behind the backboard and the band's drums sounded their deafening dumdum dumm. The brick went up and flew off the rim. No good. Then Jamie Parsons fouled OSU star Smith, who tied up the game at 69 with two free chucks, despite Penn State's efforts to ice her with a timeout. Then the crowd went certifiably nuts. Finally all the peo ple who gave Smith a standing ova tion before tipoff were once again on their feet. In response to Ohio State coach Nancy Darsch's waving arms, the crowd remained standing in the final seconds. With Penn State up by three, Smith took a desperation three-point shot, of which she hit none since the first half. Deservedly so, Duda's voice was hoarse by that time something he has grown accustomed to during the 14 years he's pulled for the home team. And when Smith's failed attempted landed in the tucked-away hands of Shauntai Hall, Duda's head sank into his chest. Clearly, he was disappointed that he and his colleagues in the stands. He lifted his eyes finally to com mend the Lady Buckeyes' efforts in what was no doubt the best bas ketball game I have ever seen. Christine L.
