The injury sometimes can cost an athlete not one, but two seasons of competition. But the day after he was injured while awkwardly tried to tackle the Lions' Barry Sanders in the Steelers' opener, Woodson asked his doctors to estimate the least amount of time it would take for him to recover. Told four months, Woodson said, "Let's do it." However, recuperating from so serious an injury is not the same as rehabilitating a sprained ankle. It is mid-November and Woodson still isn't running, and he was on crutches three weeks ago. The tendon graft requires time to grow and strength en, and the torn cartilage also cannot mend with swimming or stair climbers, only with time usually about six months. "I'll have a better idea next month when I start on the treadmill and start running," Woodson said. "Then I'll know if I can do it. It's kept me going all season, and it's tough not playing, but I'm not going to take a chance on ruining my career just to play in a couple of games." But Figures tried to rush his recovery he started the Steelers' second game of the season Sept. 10, the week after Woodson was hurt and still is not the player he was last season. He has not regained his starting job, and plays only in the Steelers' dime pack age. "He's not 100 percent yet," Cowher said. "Maybe I should have sat out the whole season," Woodson said.
