Alstott to lead Boilermakers against Michigan By HARRY ATKINS ,4P Sports Writer ANN ARBOR, Mich.— Mike Alstott considers himself an old time football player. Yet, the Pur due fullback does admit to some pretty strange training methods. How strange? Well, he likes to push Jeeps. Great for the leg mus cles. You can laugh if you like. But nobody is laughing at Alstott's numbers. He is the nation's 12th leading rusher with an average of 135.3 yards per game. During his career at Purdue, he has rushed for 3,281 yards. That leaves him just 34 yards shy of Otis Armstrong's school record. You can be sure that will get the attention of No. 13 Michigan (7-2, 3- 2 Big Ten) when the Wolverines host the Boilermakers (3-4-1, 1-3-1) on Saturday. The Wolverines, back in 1992, were the first team to yield a 100-yard game to Alstott. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Alstott has come a long way since then. "You can't find a better person," Purdue coach Jim Colletto said. And he probably works in the concession stand at halftime. But what about pushing a Jeep? What's that all about? "My roommate and I came up with this crazy idea of pushing Jeeps," Alstott said. "We were just looking for a way to keep in shape during the summer. We took my Wrangler out behind the field house and took turns pushing it 100 yards." Hey, whatever blows your hair back. It works for Alstott. This season, he has already rushed for 1,082 yards and eight touchdowns. And he has been espe cially tough at crunch time. Alstott didn't play in the fourth quarter of Purdue's 35-13 blowout over Ball State. But in the Boilermakers' other seven games, he has gained 371 yards in the fourth quarter. That's 34 percent of his total yards, if you're counting. "I think I have a lot of determi nation," Alstott said. Last week, in a 38-27 victory over Wisconsin, the Boilermakers played perhaps their best game of the season. Purdue rolled up 596 total yards, 395 on the ground. Alstott turned in his eighth straight 100-yard game, rushing for a career-high 204 against the Bad gers. Edwin Watson also had a career-high, rushing for 194 yards. Alstott also scored two touch downs in that game, moving past Leroy Keyes for the most career touchdowns at Purdue. Alstott now has 39. "I feel I'm capable," Alstott said. "I feel my offensive line has the ability to give me the holes. We're not going to lay down for anyone." That last comment, of course, was aimed directly at Michigan's defense. The Wolverines boast the Big Ten's top rushing defense and the third-best in the nation. Michi gan's defense has allowed only 77.9 yards per game on the ground. W* MEiTa Life without Lobo for UConn By CHRISTINE HANLEY AP Sports Writer STORRS, Conn.— It was a magical season. Rebecca Lobo led the Connecticut Huskies to the top of the college basketball world, then rode off to face new challenges. Except the story didn't end there. Only the second NCAA Divi sion I women's team to go unbeaten, UConn was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrat ed. There was a trip to the White House, talk show appearances, parades and the other trappings that come with being a champion and a media sensation. With a new season beginning, reminders of last year still loom large. Last week, the players got their championship rings and a banner was unfurled at Gampel Pavilion: "1995 NCAA Champi ons." No one expects it to fade anytime soon. And Lobo, of course, has moved on. The national player of the year, Lobo now plays for the U.S. national team. She has signed a book deal and several lucrative endorsement contracts. Now it's up to the Huskies to try to win without her. They know they can't replace everything Lobo brought to the team and that without her, dupli cating their 35-0 season will be nearly impossible. That doesn't mean they won't win another title. The players believe they can still repeat, and they're going about it in a busi nesslike way, trying to develop the chemistry that was so crucial last season. "It's going to take a while to find the right mix and style of play with this new team. "We lost a lot of points and blocked shots, but we also lost a lot of intangibles. Somebody has to become the same kind of pres ence and take over all the things Rebecca used to do. Right now, I don't know where we're going to find that. But someone usually emerges to do that." There are plenty of candidates because UConn lost only one other player from last season. A natural choice is senior point guard and co-captain Jennifer Rizzotti, a second-team All- American known for her gritty style of play. Her full-court dash and left-handed layup in the wan ing moments of last season's title game with Tennessee propelled the Huskies to their victory. Senior Jamelle Elliott and 6- foot-7 junior Kara Wolters also are back from last season's start ing five. Plume. Amount Paid_ , No. of Insertions_ Make Checks payable to: Collegian Inc. i
