Spikers take on Trojans in preseason action By CHAD WASHINGTON Collegian Sports Writer The exhibition season is used as a test for teams to see whether their preparation towards the upcoming season is improved or lackluster. On Friday night, the Penn State men's volleyball team will see how its preparation is when they take on a familiar West Coast foe. The Nittany Lions face Southern California in a exhibition match at Rochester, N.Y., starting at 7:30 p.m. tonight. This is the final match for Penn State in the fall semester, after splitting a pair of preseason exhibition matches in Canada against Laval University in late October. Penn State Coach Mark Pavlik wants to build on the momentum of the Lions' performance against Laval. He feels that playing a tough team like the Trojans will give the Lions more motivation than in the match es in Canada. "If you can't be up emotionally for a Penn State- USC match, you're dead," Pavlik said. Trojan Coach Jim McLaughlin expects a battle from Penn State, being that Southern Cal's preseason schedule has been a rough road. The Trojans also took victories in Canada, beating conference rival Stanford and the University of Cal gary. "We always expect a tough match from Penn State." McLaughlin wants to use this match to fine-tune his team's mental aspects by stressing the importance of patience. "I am going to be looking at our discipline and our poise," McLaughlin said. "We are going to work on the right things.' Pavlik also expects a fight, knowing that these two teams may meet later in the year in the NCAA Cham pionships. "I think that Southern Cal is primed. They have a senior center, great freshman, and are coming back with good talent," Pavlik said. "I think that they are the team to beat in the West." Both coaches are going into the match with confi dence, but both realize the game will also be special for the two leaders, since the pair have been good friends for years. "Not only is (Pavlik) a great coach," McLaughlin said. "He is a great friend." 19TH ARY CELEBRATION 4 BIG DAYS OF ~ amtE AIRWALK .. . • .. 1110111111 W - _, Airwalk Men's & $ 2 999 Skechers Men's $ 39 99 Rockport Mens $9 9 99 Women 19 Ounce Work Boot Goretex Oxfords Regularty $150.00 Clarks Men's Canyon $6 9 99 Clarks Men's $4l 499 Outdoor Casual Trek Ultimate I Regularly $200.00 Save Now Through Sumlay, November 12 THE IN4URFttiet)EiNT O U T F ITT ER S H AMERICAN OL 11111TERS Regularly $50.00 Regularly $llO.OO 1 0 7 Attitude that fits.
