McClatchy closes in on purchasing Bucs By KATHLEEN HOLDER Associated Press Writer RANCHO MURIETTA, Calif As a teen ager, Kevin McClatchy dreamed of owning a professional sports team. Not that far removed from his teen years, McClatchy is about to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates. At 32, the scion of a Sacramento newspaper dynasty would become the youngest owner in major league baseball, and possibly in the his tory of the sport. “I think I’ve known since high school that it would be something I would enjoy doing,” McClatchy said in an interview last week in this Sacramento suburb. “I didn’t always nec essarily think it would be realistic.” McClatchy and his partners Tuesday agreed to put up $5O million in cash, plus a Keenan not finding warm welcome By R.B. FALLSTROM AP Sports Writer ST. When the spotlight fell on the Blues’ coach and general manager during pre-game ceremonies for the Blues’ 5-3 victory over Edmon ton in their home opener Tuesday night, boos rained down. What you’ll discover will be yourself. ” - Alan Alda Tisdale, a Santa Barbara insurance salesman who attended college with McClatchy at the University of Califomia-Santa Barbara. “I just remember Kevin being intense. He would always want to do things perfectly,” Tisdale said. “When we were in football prac tice, and he would make a mistake, he would get really upset and he’d work and work and work until he got it right.” Erwin Potts, chief executive for McClatchy Newspapers Inc. in Sacramento, described McClatchy as bright, capable and determined. “I hope we haven’t lost him forever to the newspaper business,” Potts said. McClatchy became the fifth generation of his family to be involved with The Sacramen to Bee after his father died of a heart attack in 1989. He worked in advertising for the paper in St Louis Keenan blamed the media for his problems. He said he’s been unfair ly portrayed as a heartless soul with no consideration for tradition or fan attachment, particularly after dealing Shanahan to Hartford in July for young defenseman Chris Pronger. “They are obviousy getting feed back from you people,” Keenan said at his post-game news brief ing. “I think they base most of their opinion on what’s written or said in here. “There are a lot of value judg ments made about hockey players and support of fan favorites.” Hull, Murray Baron and Basil Mcßae are the only players left. Does watching and reading about sports interfere with your studies? Do you even sometimes watch sports alone? If you do, you may just be a sportsa holic. Kevin Quirk, a former sports writer at the Charlotte Observer, is now the director of Lifechange, a consulting service for people going through life transitions. He is in the process of writing a book on sportsaholics. The book is going to be titled, Men In Hiding: Escaping from Life Through Sports. The pur pose of the book is to help people who allow sports to dominate their lives. Quirk said some people, mostly men, have to wake up and take a look at life. “When you’re wrapped up in sports,” he said, “you end up missing a lot in life.” The book, which is expected to be out in about nine months to a year, asks the reader many ques tions that, depending on the answers, could label the reader a sport saholic. Some of the questions included are: ■ How does your spouse, girl friend or family feel about all the time and energy you devote to sports, and how do they show it? ■ What else other than sports grips you with the same intensity and passion? ■ What was it like for you the last time your favorite team lost a really big game? He also said a lot of women are calling him asking for copies of the ques tions to give to their husbands or boyfriends. Kevin Grieser (junior-landscape architecture) answered the ques tions to determine if he is a sport saholic. Grieser has worked for ESPN for the past two years and set up tele vision platforms for events like golf’s U.S. Open. He has worked with Chris Berman and traveled to various cities to work on sporting events. When asked about how his family felt about all the time he devoted to sports, Grieser said it didn’t bother them because his father watches sports with him all of the time and, during the hockey playoffs, his mother even got hooked. “The last time one of my teams lost a big game was when the Fly ers were knocked out of the play offs by the New Jersey Devils,” he said, “I was really depressed for a while.” He said on the average he spent about IS minutes reading the sports section of the newspaper while he only spends five minutes with the rest of the news. four Issues $8.60 10.60 12.60 14.60 16.60 18.60 Three Issues $7.00 8.60 10.20 11.80 13.40 15.00 Two Issues $5.40 6.60 7.80 9.00 10.20 11.40 Phone —_— Amount J No. of Insertions. ___L J Make Checks i payable to: Collegian Inc. a Each Additional Issues $10.20 12.60 15.00 17.40 19.80 22.20 issue $1.60 2.00 2.40 2.80 3.20 3.60
