Spy magazine spoof 'exposes' editor NEW YORK (AP) No, that's not really New Yorker editor Tina Brown pictured nude in a Spy magazine spoof; it's her Courtesy of Disney head grafted onto someone else's body. To celebrate Brown's second anniversary at The New Yorker —which actually won't be until next year Spy published a 12- page satire of the venerable magazine in its September issue. In addition to the photo, which appears to depict a topless Brown holding two candle-topped cupcakes, the spoof parodies The New Yorker's cartoons, covers and several writers. In an "editorial," Brown is depicted as comparing her redesign of the magazine to turning a 14th-century church into a mini-mall. New Yorker spokeswoman Maurie Peri said Brown considered the parody "a hoot." College recruits poet to ease racial tension OLIVET, Mich. (AP) Poet Maya Angelou is the latest recruit in Olivet College's efforts to ease campus racial tensions lingering more than a year after a brawl between black and white students. The black writer gave a videotaped interview Friday promoting multiculturalism. It will be shown at orientation sessions Angelou spoke about her life, how she became a writer and the U.S. civil rights movement. Quoting a slave, she said, "I am Tom Cruise a human. Nothing human can be alien to me." Many black students left, fearing for their safety, following the 1992 brawl. The school president resigned, but blacks at the small, liberal arts college still complain about campus hostility and a Eurocentric curriculum. Eight percent of the school's roughly 730 students are black, spokeswoman Rita Bunton said. The school has increased efforts to make black students feel welcome and is educating staff in racial awareness. Angelou, 66, read her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" at President Clinton's inauguration. She recently appeared in the John Singleton film Poetic Justice, which also featured her poetry. Faces of Death IV, a documentary-style film depicting death and crippling injuries, used footage of Owen being run over by a pickup truck during a 1989 charity event stunt. The truck was supposed to drive over Owen's abdomen slowly, but it stayed on his midsection too long, leaving him with five broken ribs, a torn liver, a punctured lung and a ruptured spinal disk. "If I remember right, my segment came between a guy who eats puppies and a college kid who jumped off a building with a bungee cord that was 10 feet too long," Owen said. AP Laser Photo Writer says Cruise unfit for vampire role LOS ANGELES (AP) Tom Cruise is too "Mom and apple pie" to be cast as a French- speaking, semi-androgynous vampire from the 19th Century, says author Anne Rice. Cruise and Brad Pitt have been miscast to play the lead roles in the film version of her best-selling novel Interview with the Vampire, she says. "It's like casting Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer in the movie," the author told the Los Angeles Times in a story published Sunday. The $5O million Warner Bros. project, set to begin filming in mid-October, also stars Antonio Banderas, River Phoenix and Stephen Rea. It will be directed by Neil Jordan. Cruise "is no more my Vampire Lestat than Edward G. Robinson is Rhett Butler," Miss Rice said, adding that he "should do himself and everyone else a service and withdraw." Paula Wagner, Cruise's one time agent who formed a production company with the actor at Paramount, said he is not given enough credit for his acting ability. "People had much the same reaction when Tom was cast as (paraplegic vet) Ron Kovic in `Born on the Fourth of July,"' she said.
