By NICK JESDANUN Associated Press Writer HARRISBURG Allowing pris oners to work for private compa nies would prevent some businesses from having to relocate to Mexico and other countries in search of cheap labor, a state prison official testi fied yesterday. The prison system would pro vide many labor-intensive compa nies with a steady pool of workers to fill low-paying jobs, said W. The trial against Glanton and the firm has played to a packed courtroom on the 11th floor of the U.S. Courthouse in Philadelphia since July 9. The state House Judiciary Com mittee is considering a bill that would overturn an 1883 ban on private employment for inmates and allow joint ventures between private industries and state and county prisons. Thornsley said the bill was designed to preserve jobs by keeping companies in Pennsylvania . But William George, president of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, crit icized prison officials for touting the bill as an economic boon. "If that's the intent of the bill, then we're not supporting it," he told the House panel. "We're not doing this for private industry. We're not doing this to entice businesses to Penn sylvania." George said the bill should stick to its original intent of providing prisoners with general work skills Num.' by Charles rsatratYles to Match Your IffertYl e ti Shampoo, $5 OZI cut cstyle e sore* msg. vs 512 E.
