12—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1993 Solicit Continued from Page 1 Daily Collegian stating that pre viously published letters in the Collegian could be "propaganda solicited by Brenda Hameister's staff." Andrews later said these letters could be a practical move by the University to deflect the negative image of a lawsuit and to intim idate other individuals with disa bilities from speaking. "The University should stop using handicapped people as political instruments," Andrew said, adding that some people with disabilities are afraid of being seen as "pushy" by other people with disabilities. The USAB Continued from Page 1 Kasper in the past, and added that his experience with the SOBC will be a plus for USAB. "He is very knowledgeable when it comes to student organizations," Shore said. Council of Commonwealth Stu dent Governments Coordinator Ben Stevenson, who was also nomi nated, said he was pleased with Kasper's election. He said Kasper fills an important role for USAB. "He's a good facilitator," Ste venson said. "He's not too opin ionated ... he will not be bringing any personal biases to the job." Drayton Continued from Page 1 ey, they have to realize that it's a business," Jackson said, adding that a player cannot let the business aspect of professional sports get to them. "They should respect the game." But Drayton realizes there is more to his new profession than just money. "Saying a lot of prayers and hoping that you stay injury-free," was how Drayton summed it up. "I've been blessed because I've only had minor injuries." The rigors of NFL training camp basically force a player to look out for his personal well-being. How ever, Drayton said his first pro camp is going very well. He expects to be used in a role that Lion fans may not be used to see ing him in —a backfield role. Penn State Offensive Coordinator Fran Ganter said the position is proba bly more suited for Drayton. "He runs well, has great hands he's a great natural athlete." "Handicapped people are very vulnerable," Andrew said, adding that if the University is pushing its authority, people are going to think about what they say. The letters published in the Collegian, many in early July, praised the University's efforts or told how people were always willing to help individuals with disabilities. Plaintiff Ray Winters agreed with some of the content of those let ters, but said having other people help is a last resort. "Lots of nice people is okay, but Mark Shiner, political co-direc tor of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Student Alliance, echoed Steven son's comments. Kasper is competent, Shiner said, adding that Kasper has a lot of experience dealing with USAB-like forums. Ken Martin, former USAB sec retary, said Kasper's internship in Student Affairs gives him good administrative contacts. "I understand he has a good relationship with some adminis trators," Martin said. "He proba bly has a better understanding of how student affairs works." said. "From the first day we saw him we saw that he had tremendous potential." Although Knox is known to favor a running-style offense, Ganter said that probably will not affect Drayton. But Drayton is happy to be where he is. And although there is more teaching in the college game, Drayton said the pros don't abandon teach ing completely. Training camp is a learning experience for the All- American. "You've got a lot of veterans out there and you tend to be a little tentative when you're learning because you don't want to make any mistakes," Drayton said. "I've made my mistakes. I've played tentative a little bit but I'm becoming a lot more comfortable." But that doesn't mean he isn't paying his dues as a rookie. "You pay (your dues) physically because you don't really know what's going on out there," he added. "You get beat up a little bit." ...1 on 20 1 OS I r $7.55 PER HOUR + BENEFITS The State College Area School District seeks school bus drivers. Paid training provided. University President Joab Thomas said he was also unaware of any individuals being solicited to write letters on behalf of the University. He added that if anyone would volunteer to commend University efforts, the University would wel come it. Thomas said the comprehen siveness and vagueness of the ADA makes it hard for anyone to totally comply, but added that the Uni versity's image would not be tar nished because of its efforts. "We have made a mammoth effort," Thomas said. "We haven't done everything, but no one else has either." Firm will be examining complaints Future complaints concerning alleged violations of the fair hous ing ordinance will be examined by an investigating firm, Brenna n & Associates, the State College Borough Council decided last night. Investigation would be nec essary only when other methods of resolution such as mediation, conciliation or arbitration are not successful, said Carl Hess, plan ning director of the State College Borough. "Finally, if nothing settles the problem, we would investigate," said Borough Manager Peter Marshall. The fair housing ordinance, enacted in March, protects residents from housing discrimination based on factors such as sexual orientation, marital status, race and religion. Students are not protected under the ordinance. When necessary, the investiga tors will gather information to help the borough decide if enough evi dence of discrimination exists to proceed to the district magistrate, Hess said. "We don't believe there's going to be a lot of demand for these serv ices," Hess said, adding that he expects most conflicts will be resolved before investigation. Brennan & Associates was the only agency to offer a proposal to the council, Marshall said. Few local agencies do the kind of investiga tive work required, he added. Hess said that another local agency did not offer a proposal because they were too busy with other work. by Dave Mauro READ & RECYCLE AUDIO VIDEO PLUS SUMMER CLEARANCE Audio Video Plus has too much stock!
