Adult students reach to make ends meet By WENDY KOPS Collegian Staff Writer Kathy Linden spent 18 years buying food in bulk, and cultivating her garden using only $BO a month, to feed her child and herself. Although her daughter is now grown, her thrif tiness is still needed as she tackles a college education. Linden receives financial aid because she is a full-time student but her status as a returning adult student has not helped her receive extra financial compensations. "When I first considered returning to school, I was told that I had to attend school full-time," said Linden (sophomore-English). "I couldn't see leaving my 6-year-old child for so long." Linden decided to attend the University when her daughter was older, and she could handle going to class full time to receive financial aid. Federal financial aid programs do not differentiate whether an applicant is a returning adult or not, said Edward Mills, director of client and cam pus services. The Office for Stu dent Financial Aid and the Returning Adult Student Center counsel adult learners like Linden, because their situations are different from the traditional college student, Mills said. A student is considered an adult if he or she is over the age of 24, is a veteran of the armed services, was on hiatus for four or more years or assumes multiple adult roles, said Charlene Harrison, director of the Returning Adult Student Center. Seventeen percent of the under graduate students at Penn State are over the age of 24 and there are News Division (814) 86S-1828 News, Opinions, Arts and Weekend, Sports, Photo ■ 6 p.m. to midnight Sunday ■ 10 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday ■ 10 am. to 4:30 p.m. Friday These office hours are in effect while classes are in session during Fall Semester, Spring Semester and Summer Session. ■ Theft: Diana Brewer of Boalsburg reported that some one took 20 cassette tapes from her locked car Monday night while it was parked in Parking Lot RI, University Police Serv ices said. The tapes are worth $2OO ■ Theft: Brian Payne of 1605 Hawthorne Drive reported that $125 in cash was taken from a wallet in his book bag on Sept. 9 at about 4:10 p.m. from a car wash on the 700 block of Bel laire Avenue, State College police said. compiled by Lisa Pasquarello and Tracey Topper "I couldn't see leaving my 6-year-old child for so long." Kathy Linden sophomore-English 8 percent at University Park, Har rison said. Because of their circumstances it is difficult for many returning adults to attend college full-time, she said. But unless they are full-time, degree seeking students, they can't receive work-study grants, scholarships or in many cases any financial aid, she said. The deadlines to apply for financial aid are set for the traditional col lege student, without any allow ances for different circumstances that adults may have, Harrison said. "Not everybody is able to stop their life," Linden said. "It's a big change for a lot of people." Adult students can't always think long term because they can't anticipate a spouse walking out or losing a job, Harrison said. The students miss the aid deadline and it's too late to get any help, she added. "The system is not contempo rary with who the students are today," Harrison said. Many of the adult students are more versed in finances, because they are unlike the traditional student who is right out of high school and has relied on his or her parents until entering college, Linden said. For instance Linden cans and freezes her garden's products and buys sup plies in bulk to diminish living costs.
