The lecture is connected with an exhibit currently at the museum, The Machines of Leonardo da Vinci, on display through Nov. 4. Leonardo was commissioned to create the statue by the Duke of Milan more than 400 years ago. He built a full-scale clay model of the riderless horse, and held the premiere exhibition of it in 1593, at the wedding of the Duke's niece. In the meantime, war erupted, and the bronze given to Leonardo to make the final rendition was needed to build cannons. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by IBM. ARHS examines card access system University groups discuss time options on locked doors By KRISTI McCLENDON Collegian Staff Writer For some on-campus students noth ing is more annoying than arriving at the dorms at 1 in the morning and finding the key card access system on the blink. At the Association of Residence Hall Students meeting on Monday, mem bers discussed some recent problems with system overloads, student safety and a new 24-hour access system pol icy on football weekends. The system experienced minor overloading problems last week leav ing many students out on the street until someone came to open the door for them. Clifford Lutz, police supervisor for the Department of University Safety, said the system overloaded because it was not prepared to handle the extra work of servicing all the dorms. aZ CINEMA W ALL SHOWS $ 3 .25 UNTIL 6prr_l *No Passes or Star Admissions Accepted! "Some of the computer parts are in right now but the new computer will be ready to operate by Nov. 1," said Mary Cooper, director of the Resi dence Hall Advisory Board. Some fans go into the residence halls during football weekends and do damage which is charged to the hall, Cooper said. The 24-hour access time was requested by students because of high damage costs. Don Arndt, director of housing and laundry services, asked area ARHS presidents and representatives to find out when they want the system turned on. Three proposed options are to Ellen K. Some students were not optimistic about the 24-hour possibility. "It would be an absolute pain in the neck to get friends when they want to come into the dorm," said Matt Gruenloh (sophomore -engineering). Dane Foust, ARHS adviser, stressed the importance of the system to student safety. "Students really need to know the importance of not circumventing safe ty when they let someone in their dorms," he said, citing a student who vandalized a car near Beaver Hall and escaped by running into a neighboring residence hall after someone opened the door for the student. "We may have been able to catch the person if that student had not let him in the door and had just let card access do its job," Foust said. Lisa M. Moran Sarah E. Mumford Katherine E.
