2—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Sept. 7,1989 USG Senators question need for completing liability forms By DINA ELLIS Collegian Staff Writer A form that would assure the status of Undergraduate Student Government members as full-time, registered under graduate students was met with dissat isfaction Tuesday at a USG Senate meeting. USG President Janyne Althaus pre sented the form at the meeting and asked members to sign it to avoid future liability cases involving USG as a party. She also gave members the option to disclose their social security numbers. But many members were unwilling to sign the document. "I'm not sure of the legalities. I have more questions. I don't think our social security numbers should be released." said town Senator Donn Wonderling. Althaus said many students assume that USG members are full-time under graduate students in good academic standing. The form is a way to protect USG from any future liability. "These requirements are in the USG) constitution and I think we should enforce them." She explained that protection from liability could be important in the case of USG booking a speaker who would later claim that payment had not been made. The USG member who approved the contract could be held accountable for the speaker's reimbursement if that member did not meet USG's require ments, Althaus said. She said the forms would be given to Mel Klein. director of unions and stu dent activities, who would check if stu dents met the requirements to be a member of USG. The social security numbers will make it easier to check members' files, she said. Klein said he did not know that he was going to receive the forms. Many senators are dissatisfied with the form and think that it would not cov er USG's liability. "If there is a question of liability, I am not comfortable that this would release USG from liability," said Town Senator Ron Marlow. "There isn't even a statement about privacy. There should be one if we are asked for our social security number." "I see this form as a redundance," Wonderling said. "The administration already has access to the files, and I thought we put our names on the ballot with an understanding that we met these requirements." Some members signed the document without any question and could not understand why members would have any reservations about signing it. "I thought it was clear that all of us were full-time students. I don't under stand the fuss," said West Halls Senator Kelly Glazier. "It's something they should do. We should all have the credits we need." l ithgclit VAvo#4lo"?
