New HUB Fishbowl chairs not popular with students By ELLEN KAPLAN Collegian Staff Writer Some students fidget in their seats to find a comfortable position. Others use chairs and tables as footrests, while still others resort to using the floor as a more comfortable alterna tive to new furniture in the HUB Fish bowl this semester. "Personally, I don't like the new chairs because they're uncomfortable. I don't sit in them, and you can't lay down in them. I'd like to see the old chairs brought back; either that or something similar to them," said Kelli Fike (sophomore-elementary educa tion). The old furniture consisted of octa gon-shaped chairs with a backing and octagon-shaped footrests. These were heavier and harder to move than the new chairs, said Mel Klein, director of the office of unions and student activ ities. The new upright chairs are wood en with vinyl cushions. Some students in the Fishbowl last week were not impressed with the new chairs. "I don't think they're as comfort able. The other ones were nicer for a break during classes," said Jennifer Weaver (sophomore-physics). "These are OK; they're better than plain wood chairs. I like being comfortable when I study so I think the other ones were better for that. I also liked having the stool to put my feet on." Peel-Your-Own Shrimp Served after 4 pm Cronev's 131 W. JENNIFER WEAVER, sophomore-physics The previous furniture in the Fish bowl had been there since about 1975 and could not be repaired any longer, Klein said. "It simply had been used to its fullest extent," he added. When choosing new chairs for the Fishbowl, Klein and members from his staff, in conjunction with the Office of Physical Plant and University Pup chasing, looked for furniture that could accomodate both lounging and pro gramming, Klein said. Klein also said students expressed a desire for moveable furniture that would accommodate small review ses sions and group projects. The refurbishing of the Fishbowl completed one phase of a multi-year refurbishing project of first-floor HUB, Klein said. "It was part of a package that was put into place several years ago and it's been a matter of allowing it to unfold in a progression," Klein said. Other students expressed a desire for chairs similar to the previous fur niture. If you pull up another chair to put your feet on, it's all right," Key said. "Just to sit on them with your feet down is uncomfortable. If you want to lay down, you have to lay down on the floor now." Forty footrests were retained from the older furniture and are being re upholstered, Klein said. The Universi ty will replace the footrests as soon as they are done. "It seems that the concern is more one of 'there is not a comfortable place to sleep any longer.' The area was not developed for that particular pur pose," Klein said. "You can't furnish a building that is as multi-purpose as this, particularly an area which is both a programming area and a lounge area, and try to meet everybody's needs." He said some students express dis comfort because the material is stiff. "It will take some time for it to become more malleable," Klein said. "We attempted to buy furniture that is going to have a long life to it. We should get extensive, good, depend able, reliable service from the furni ture for many years to come." Klein said if students do not like the new type of seats in the Fishbowl there are alternatives. "The main lounge is right across the SCHOLARSHIPS 14ti4.14 AVAIL ABLE Looking for a scholar ship? If Alice Paul ran the fight to preserve her birthplace, the militant Quaker suffragist might organize a march on Washington, D.C., embarrass a president or strong-arm some lawmakers. But a group established to commem orate the little-known champion of women's rights is racing against a deadline to buy Paul's birthplace a 19th century farmhouse and protect it from development. The group relies on more conventio nal fund-raising methods, which could fail if help doesn't come soon, said Bar bara Irvine, of Cinaminson, N.J., who heads the Alice Paul Centennial Foun dation. Nearly three years ago, the group raised $26,575 to salvage Paul's books, papers and memorabilia from the auc tion block and preserve the legacy of the suffragist and author of the first Equal Rights Amendment. Historians say the estate contains a priceless chronicle of the 20th century women's movement, in which which Paul was a central force, as well as an array of rare photographs, buttons, hair ners and a desk belonging to Susan B. Anthony. Paul's papers are being collected by the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College in Cam bridge, Mass.
