B—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, Sept. 5,1989 Lendl struggles to 5-set win; blanks Edberg By BARRY WILNER AP Sports Writer NEW YORK Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl, who have dominated the U.S. Open for the last two decades, showed why in varying manners last night. Connors, at 37 the oldest player in the tournament, came back two days after dehydrating and upset No. 3 Ste fan Edberg 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round. The 13th seed and five-time Open champion lost the first two games of the match, then routed the Swede. "I played the kind of match every body dreams of playing," he said. Top seed Lendl, pushed to the limit by the attacking style of Andrei Ches nokov, called on all the power and guile that has made him dominant this decade, rallying to beat the 16th seed from the Soviet Union 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Connors needed medical treatment for more than two hours Saturday after beating Andres Gomez. But he was vintage Jimbo against Edberg, even shrugging off three warnings from the umpire for using abusive lan guage. The second game of the second set was awarded to Edberg and Connors then sat down in his courtside chair rather then resume play. After talking with referee Gayle Bradshaw, Connors was convinced to continue. And he continued the romp, needing only 102 minutes to move into the Baseball looking into revenue sharing By RONALD BLUM AP Sports Writer NEW YORK Baseball owners, preparing for col lective bargaining negotiations this winter with the players' union, are considering a proposal that would include a form of revenue sharing, The Associated Press has learned. Barry Rona, executive director of management's Player Relations Committee, said revenue-sharing proposals were under development by the owners but he was unsure if they would be offered to the Major League Baseball Players' Association. Baseball, beset with fractuous labor relations for 14 years, has never had any form of revenue sharing . "I think the genesis of forming a partnership with the players came from basketball, which has had a working partnership with their players in the salary area and the revenue area for the second collective bargaining agreement," Rona said. "For me, it's great to come out and play like that," Connors said. "It's excellent for my feeling to continue to go out and play like this. "I love playing here. I'll always remember this place. I've played some of my best tennis here." Lendl, a three-time winner here and a finalist every year since 1982, slugged it out on the grandstand court with Chesnokov for 3 hours, 45 min utes. They matched powerful fore hands and madly spinning backhands before Lendl's break in the seventh game of the final set was decisive. "He wasn't missing and I decided if I was going to go down, I was going down swinging," Lendl said. Lendl, 111-8 on hardcourts since 1986, made a stunning 73 unforced errors to 42 for the Soviet. In the end, Lendl had won only four more points than Chesnokov. Chesnokov had Lendl off-balance for most of the match, often pinning Lendl well behind the baseline. But Lendl showed why he is a champion in the final set. While Lendl and Chesnokov were battling at the 6,000-seat grandstand, the 20,000-seat stadium was three fourths empty for the first set of Edberg-Connors. Earlier, Tim Mayotte, finally feel ing at home at the Open, moved into the quarterfinals for the first time, beating French Open champion Michael Chang. In exchange, teams are allowed to have a salary cap; this year it is $9.8 million per team. Clubs must have a minimum payroll of $8.3 million. "It seems to be a successful, amicable and profita ble arrangement for the players and the clubs," Rona said. "It seems to be almost uniquely suited to the sports area. That's why we're taking a long and hard and serious look and developing a partnership." Donald Fehr, executive director of the players' asso ciation, said "it's hard for me to comment until I know more about it." "Does revenue-sharing mean 85 percent?" he said. "Does it mean 15 percent? WAKE U After two-year ban, Gasser begins again By TONY CZUCZKA Associated Press Writer GENEVA Sandra Gasser, the Swiss middle-distance runner who unsuccesfully challenged a two-year drug ban in court, starts her comeback tomorrow in an 800-meter race at Bern. The International Amateur Athletic Federation suspended Gasser from competition and revoked her bronze medal in the 1,500 meters at the 1987 track world championships in Rome after urine tests showed traces of meth yltestosterone, an illegal performance building steroid. She was the only athlete to test posi tive for drugs at the championships, where Ben Johnson set the current world record in the men's 100-meter dash. Gasser denied ever using drugs and accused the lAAF of covering up a mis take at the testing lab, a charge rejected by officials of the world track body. "My biggest wish is to continue where I left off," she said ahead of the ban's expiriation today. "I simply want to be among the world's best." Gasser's race plans for the remaining outdoor mason include the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York on Sept. 23. She says that while bitterness lingers, she feels "very strong, physically and psychologically." "The doping taint will cling to me for a long time, since I cannot prove my innocence," she said. "But if I perform Missed putt sparks Norman to victory By RICK GANO AP Sports Writer FRANKLIN, Wis. When they got even, Greg Norman got mad. He says that's what fired him to a three-shot victory in the Greater Mil waukee Open Sunday. Norman started the final round with a four-stroke lead, seemingly comfort able because he had a tournament record 199 over the first 54 holes. But he began the round with a bogey, and when he could do no better than a par 36 on the front nine, Wayne Levi caught him with a 32. When Norman bogeyed the 11th hole by missing a 12-foot putt for par, he was in a tie with Levi and Andy Bean, who was already in the clubhouse at 16- under-par. Bean missed a 35-foot putt on No. 18 that would have put him the lead. Norman was angry after his miss on No. 11. "What happened on 11 was enough stimulus to get anybody going. It would TELEMARKETERS NEEDED TO make business-to-business calls at our West College Avenue facili ty. Three to four hours/day, 2 to 5 days/week. $5/hour. Training pro vided. To celebrate the start of Gasser's sec ond career, friends organized the race over 800 meters, where she holds the Swiss record of one minute, 58.90 sec onds. Diane Richburg of the United States and Gabi Lesch of West Ger many are expected to compete. Gasser, 27, trained hard during her suspension. She volunteered for several short-notice doping tests supervised by Swiss track officials, all of which were reported negative. She ran faster than her own national record in an unofficial 1,000-meter race against three men last May. Her ill-fated Sept. 5, 1987 world championship race, where she finished third in 3: 59.06, capped a year of rapid improvement. News of her positive test hit hard in Switzerland, which has few world-class athletes. Gasser first obtained a Swiss court injunction overturning the suspension, but it remained theoretical after the lAAF threatened to bar anyone who ran against her. Then, she and the Swiss Athletics Federation lost an appeal to the lAAF in which she argued that discrepancies between the results of two separate urine tests invalidated the steroid find ing. Gasser filed suit in London, the lAAF's headquarters, in June 1988 in a final attack on the ban. have fired up a football team," said Norman, who went on to birdie three of the final seven holes. "Missing that putt on No. 11 won me the tournament." The Australian birdied No. 12 for a one-shot lead and then rolled in a 25- footer on No. 13 to build the lead to two strokes. Levi began to falter he had three bogeys on the back nine and Norman wrapped up the title with another birdie on No. 16. Norman's final-day 70 allowed him to finish the tournament at 19-under-par 269, three shots ahead of Bean and five ahead of Levi. "From what happened on 11 to what happened on 12, my whole system was different," said Norman, who was aware that he had fallen into a tie. "I was a lot more relaxed even though I only had a one-stroke lead. I felt very confident to take it on in from there.
