Hole in one nets Trevino $175,000 By 808 GREEN AP Golf Writer LA QUINTA, Calif. Lee Trevino lofted a 6-iron shot 167 yards and into the cup for a hole in one worth $175,- 000 yesterday in golfs Skins Game. Trevino watched in near disbelief as the ball hit the island green of the 17th hole at PGA West and trickled in the cup. The 47-year-old Trevino trotted to his caddy, rotund Herman Mitchell, gave him a big hug, then began jumping into the air, both arms raised. “How 'bout my man,” howled Mitchell. “He did it. He did it.” “Great shot. Lee. As good as you can hit it," Jack Nicklaus said in congratulation. “God. Can you believe it? It was on it all the way,” said Arnold Palmer. Palmer and Nicklaus, along with Fuzzy Zoeller, followed Trevino to the tee on the par-3 hole, needing an ace to halve the hole. None, of course, got it. “Well,” sighed Zoeller as his shot went about 12 feet by the cup, “I just flat blew a hole in one again.” The perfect shot, launched against a clear, blue desert sky, was the incredible climax to Trevino’s bright est day in the sun. He swept all the money available on the last nine holes, $285,000, and completed the two-day, 18-hole, made-for-television event with $310,000. (AP) - Ivan Lendl broke the bank in the $1 million Stakes Match tennis show yesterday, beating Pat Cash 11-21, 21-18, 21-7, 22-20 in the finals. Lendl took home $583,200, while Cash left empty-handed. "I felt a little sympathy for him. It’s hard to play like this and walk away with nothing. But we all knew it could happen,” Lendl said. “When I remember Wimbledon, though, I lose my sympa thy for him.” Lendl, the world’s No. 1 player, and Cash, the Australian who beat him in the Wimbledon final, qualified for the best-of-five final of 21-point games by beating out Stefan Edberg and John McEnroe in two days of round-robin matches. Each of the lour received $250,000 to start. They played a unique format, in which money changed hands with service aces, double faults and rally hits. Lendl, with $332,600, and Cash, with $250,600, were top finishers in the round robin and met in the final, where each ace and double fault was worth $4,000 and each rally hit $4OO. Penn State Penn State and that’s only the second hole in one I’ve ever had,” Trevino said. “And I didn’t get to see the other one,” Lee continued. “It was at Pleasant Valley on the first hole. I was in the second group off the tee and I’d been out all night and I couldn’t focus very good.” Zoeller, who had dominated this popular show the last two years, and Nicklaus each won $70,000 over the first nine holes Saturday. Arnold Palmer. 58, who has competed in all five Skins Games, was shut out. Trevino, who missed several crit ical short putts Saturday, said he made an overnight change in his putting stance that helped him with a 12-foot birdie putt that was worth $25,- 000 on the first hole of the day’s play, which started from the 10th tee. Zoeller dropped a 20-foot birdie putt on the 11th, but Arnold rolled in a 15- footer on top of it to halve the hole and make the 12th worth $50,000. Trevino won that one, too. He scored from 20 feet and Palmer lipped out a 12-footer that would have tied him. The next four holes were halved, with Nicklaus and Zoeller each mak ing birdie on the 16th. “Jack’s putt (about a six-footer) was a big one for me. It kept the skin alive,” Trevino said. With the carryovers, that raised the value of the 17th to $175,000. And that was settled with one swing of the club. “The most astounding hole in one I’ve ever seen,” Palmer said. Also, the first game was worth $30,000; the second, $60,000: the third, $90,000; the fourth $120,000 and the fifth, $150,000 Cash, leader after the first day of round robins, started well against Lendl in the final. He won the first game handily and took $64,000 from Lendl s bank to lead $315,000 to $268,200. But Lendl, trailing early in the second game, suddenly came alive. He rallied to win the next three, collecting $56,000 and $123,600 and then took Cash's last $135,400. Cash bolted from the court. Lendl said he saw Cash briefly in the dressing room. “He asked me to buy him dinner when we get to New York,” Lendl quipped. “But he owes me $l,BOO. He was short that in the last game. I could only win what he had left." Winning his biggest-ever paycheck was satis fying, but Lendl said he would prefer the format be changed so that a finalist can’t end up with less money than players who don’t qualify for the final. ‘Tennis needs maybe three crazy events like 8’ PROJECTION T.V. After a shaky start, Lendl won the second game from 13-16 with an 8-2 burst. He was sharp from the baseline and clever with drop volleys as he whipped Cash in the third game with a 19-3 burst. Tomba. 20, already dubbed the successor to Gustav Thoeni. the Italian Alpine hero, won the spe cial slalom Fridav. After a sleepless night caused by stomach pain, Tomba was third fastest in the first run and second fastest in the second down the Kandahar track to clock a winning aggregate of 2 minutes 19.51 sec onds. He skied fearlessly through a snowfall to set heat times of 1:12.21 and 1:07.30. Stenmark, the biggest World Cup winner with 85 races in a 14- year career, was the runner-up, just nine-hundredths of a second behind Tomba. The 31-year-old Swede, who had dropped out in Friday’s slalom, said he felt close to victory and that a few mistakes put him be hind the Italian. "I have trained more in giant slalom than in slalom this season Houston forfeits win By MICHAEL A. LUTZ AP Sports Writer HOUSTON The University of Houston must forfeit its 37-7 victory over Temple because safety Randy Thornton was ineligible to play in the Nov. 14 game, Houston Athletic Di rector Rudy Davalos said last night. Davalos said an examination of Thornton’s class records showed that two courses were added to Thornton’s schedule on Nov. 12, past the late add deadline. The courses were added incorrect ly, Davalos said, meaning Thornton was not enrolled for 12 semester hours at the time of the Temple game as required by Southwest Conference and NCAA rules. Davalos said he planned discipli nary action in the case. “There is going to be a real keen look at that operation, there’s just going to be a real tough check-out system." Davalos said. “We’re going EXPERIENCED WAITRESS NOW YOU CAN receive $2O or WANTED. Part and full time, more per week for approximately Apply within. Joel Gaspoz helped save the reputation of the Swiss team bv capturing third place. 26 hun dredths of a second behind the winner. He skied the fastest sec ond heat to improve a disappoint ing first-heat sixth place. "I knew I had to outpace Tomba in the second heat to make the podium but the Italian also did extremely well." Gaspoz said. Austria's Helmuth Mayer dropped to fourth place overall after an overcautious second heat. He had come close to his first-ever World Cup victory by setting the fastest time in the first run. The two wins in as many races gave Tomba a lead of 50 points in the overall Cup standings, well ahead of Swedes Jonas Nilsson and Stenmark who piled up 21 and 20 points, respectively. Tomba, who made his debut in the World Cup in 1986, broke into tears at the finish line and said, “I wish mama were here so I could embrace and kiss her." to have disciplinary action appropri ate for that. I won’t say who it is, but it's people in our department." Thornton, a starter since his fresh man season, had been demoted this season but played well in the Cou gars’ 60-40 victory over Texas on Nov. 7 and regained his starting posi tion. Thornton played well again the following week against Temple be fore his class problems surfaced. After the Temple game, Thornton was dropped from another class, giv ing him only nine semester hours, and the Cougars declared him ineli gible for the rest of the season. "I hope this sends out a message that we aren't going to tolerate any thing like this," Davalos said. "It's rather evident that these courses were added to make the young man eligible.” Davalos issued a statement last night following an examination ol Thornton’s class records. -iillss r| * Me* % ae»' THE APARTMENT P E 0 P L C Open Mon.-Fri. 9am-spm, Sat. 10-4 Rental Office: 309 E.
