—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1987 Halloween spirits haunt nature trail at Shaver's Creek By STEPHANIE KURLAND Collegian Staff Writer Shaver's Creek Environmental Center is sponsoring a Halloween trail Friday that will feature a walk in woods filled with spooky characters. Trail tours will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Programs will start every half hour. The Environmental Center is 14 miles outside of State College, in the University-owned Stone Valley Recreation Area. The program is new this year, said Cyndi Asmus, coordinator of the trail. In the past, Shaver's Creek has held smaller public programs, but she said this is the first attempt at such a large activity. The primary motivation for the trail is to raise funds for Shaver's Creek, she said. Shaver's Creek serves to meet the goals of the University research, education and community service, Asmus said The center is also a laboratory facility for students in the recreation and parks department AOll • AOll • AOll • AOll • AOll • Aon • AOll • > z The Sisters of - 0 $) Alpha Omicron Pi Would Like • To Congratulate › 0 Sue Kauffman . Beaver Ave Open 24 Hours 237-1317 238-2679 Since the merger of the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the College of Human Development, Shaver's Creek has lost funding, and the profits from the trail are expected to help alleviate that loss, Asmus said. Tickets will be be sold at all McLanahan's Drug Stores through this week. The price is $2 and the tickets are specific as to time and date. Twenty-four people from the Recreation and Parks Community Leadership classes, as well as regular staff members and volunteers from town will work the trail, Asmus said. "We eventually hope to have a lot more volunteers," said Corky Potter, director of Shaver's Creek. The aim of the trail is not only to scare people, Potter said, but to keep alive the rich history and mystique of the legends that surround Halloween. The center hopes to attract people who like to be scared in the woods at night, Asmus said. However, the matinee geared for children won't include startling effects.
