12—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, April 15, 1986 Feldman hopes to stabilize By MEGAN CULHANE Collegian Sports Writer When an electron leaves the orbital path of an atom, it inevitably becomes unstable. And for the men's fencing team, the departure of graduating captain Brian Keane may be the loss that starts it down the road to instability. Adam Feldman, the newly-appointed captain and national champion foil fencer, will follow in Keane's footsteps. Feldman realizes the loss of Keane, an outstanding sabreur, will weaken the team's depth at that division, but he does not see that loss as a cause for instability in the team's nucleus. "I think the only kind of pressure I'm going to have, is to follow in Brian's footsteps," Feldman said. "The nucleus of the team is back. They have the (NCAA) experience, and with that comes consistency." However, following up a 12-2 season, in which the Lions only losses were to arch-rivals Colum bia and Notre Dame, will be a tough job for the team. The foilist is determined to do his best to improve on this past season's record, and will look for help from division captains Matt Glick (foil), George Poslusney (epee), and Peter Cox (sabre). "It's through these guys that I'll get a lot of my help," Feldman said. "Maybe I'd be a better leader behind the scenes than in front of the troops. I like to lead the cavalry too, but I like to have somebody next to me." Feldman feels next year's, team will possess many of the strong attributes that earned it the No. 3 ranking this year. And if the fencers had a lucky number it would surely be three. The Lions placed third in the NCAA Championships, marking the third consec utive year the team captured a top five spot. The team, they have worked hard to build into a force Lions sent three outstanding freshman to rep- and Keane shares those feelings. resent them at this year's NCAAs, and produced "Straight from the beginning I told (my team three All-America athletes in Keane, Feldman mates) that you have to have the will to win, you and Cox. have to want to win and at the same time you Keane will be the only All-American the team have to be a gentleman and represent Penn will lose. No one wants to leave a position, or a State," Keane said. "All season long the've done AUDIO CARVER C 1 PRE-AMP: carver Ml-5T Amp.: Luxman PD(121) turntable. Ask for John, 814-942- 6383. Offer ends April 19. Softball in Lady By MIKE FRASSINELLI Collegian Sports Writer If the women's softball team could have subtracted an inning of its choice from every game it played over the weekend in the Lady Lion Invitational, the squad would have emerged undefeated. But things don't work that way, so the Lady Lions (15-20) dropped five of six games and finished in seventh place in the eight-team tournament won by Central Michigan. "We just always seem to have one bad inning every game and that's when we lose it," shortstop Nan Sichl er said. Penn State's first game of the tour nament on Friday against Eastern Mions was a sign of things to come. The game remained scoreless through four innings, but the Lady Lions surrendered three runs in the fifth to lose, 3-0. Penn State's second game on Fri day against Rhode Island proved to be more of the same. Be hind superb pitching by Beth Devlin, the game was scoreless through four. But the Wrams added a run in the fifth to win the game, 1-0. The Lady Lions had their chances to win the game, however. With no outs in the fourth, Donna Devanney tripled into deep right field, but she was left on base. The Lady Lions seemingly had another rally going in the sixth when Karen Schilling sin gled to lead off the inning, was moved to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Devanney then reached base after getting hit by a pitch, but both runners were stranded. .:::WARTa.To: . fiENt.:: team falters Lion Invite With the Wram runner on second, Val Gorman reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with no outs. Polanis then got a key strikeout when she fanned Rhode Island's top hitter, Tracy Turner. With a full count on the next hitter, Polanis fired in an apparent third strike, but the batter was awarded a walk. Chrissy Ashburn then singled into left field to win. Penn State ended Friday with an 0- 3 record after losing the next game to Central Michigan, 10-1. Three Penn State errors helped the Chippewas to nine runs in the second. However, the Lady Lions re bounded from Friday's sub-par show ing to post a victory over Ohio State in the first round of the consolation bracket on Saturday, 5-3. Sichler (three hits and two RBIs), Devanney (two hits, two RBIs), With standley (two hits, one RBIs) and Schilling (two hits) accounted for all of the Lady Lion offense, while Devlin struck out two allowed only one walk and seven hits to pick up the win. A heartbreaking extra-inning loss to Rhode Island (3-2, in eight innings) in the next game was indicative of the way things went for Penn State throughout the tournament. With the game tied 2-2 after regula tion, a tournament rule designed to speed up games was put into effect. The hitter who made the last out in the previous inning was placed on second base to start the next inning. Penn State got the first chance, but failed to score. • PENNWOOD NORTH APARTMENTS A lifestyle of comfort in a country setting. Dominique Wil kins, who had a NBA season-high 57 points last Thursday to take control of a close individual scoring race with Adrian Dantley and Alex English, took more than twice as many shots as any of his teammates. But Randy Wittman, Kevin Willis, Glenn Rivers and 5-foot-6 rookie reserve Spud Webb all proved they could have outstanding performances during the Hawks' team record-equalling 50-win •season. WESTERN CONFERENCE Los Angeles Lakers (1) vs. San Antonio (8) The Spurs were a solid team, 24-20, in January, but injuries to starters Artis Gilmore, Johnny Moore and Steve Johnson took their toll in the second half and they won only 11 of their last 38 games, barely holding on to win the last playoff spot. The Lakers, who coasted to a 62-20 record after leading the division by more than 10 games since the All-Star break, have everyone healthy and are anxious to start defending their title. The Kings have a good back court trio in Reggie Thew, Mike Woodson and Larry Drew, while the Rockets have had to play Robert Reid at point guard recently because of John Lucas' drug problems and Allen Leaven's injured hand. Leaven is expected to return, however, and Houston's advantage of Akeem Olaju won and Ralph Sampson over Sacra mento's LaSalle Thompson should give Houston an edge. Rockets in four. Denver (3) vs. Portland (6) The Nuggets are even worse than Houston on the road, finishing 13-28, which makes them vulnerable if they slip at home. But the Trail Blazers, who finished 22 games behind the Lakers in the Pacific Division and had a 12- game losing streak in February, are just plain vulnerable since losing defensive standout Sam Bowie with a leg injury. After giving up on aging Caldwell Jones at center, Portland Coach Jack Ramsay moved Mychal Thompson from forward to the mid dle. Nuggets in four. Dallas (4) vs. Utah (5) Utah's Darrell Griffith missed the entire season with a foot injury, so Dallas appears to have a big advantage at ,shooting guard with Rolando Black man over Bob Hansen. Point guards Rickey Green and John Stockton of the Jazz and Derek Harper and Brad Davis of the Mavericks match up equally, and it's also hard to choose between starting Dallas forwards Mark Aguirre and Sam Perkins ver sus Utah's Adrian Dantley and Karl Malone.
