Oct. 9, 1985 Marshall feels at home in Lions' pool By ROB BIERTEMPFEL Collegian Sports Writer It's difficult being a man without a country or shall we say a swimmer without a pool. Just ask Susan Mar shall. Karshall, a transfer from the Uni versity of Tennessee at Knoxville, had to sit out last season with the women's swim team while trying to adjust to life at Penn State. "It was confusing," she said. "I had no classes. My schedule was lost at Shields Building." In addition to scheduling problems, Marshall had to deal with being the first Penn State undergraduate to major in the field of sports psycholo gy• Sports psychcology, an area where the focus is on the mental aspects of athletic competition, is a relative newcomer to academics. Marshall first encountered it in 1979, at the Jack Nelson Swim Camp in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Important aspects of sports psy chology are the study of how concen tration, relaxation and imagery relate to an athlete's performance. Marshall said she feels these aspects have helped tier in competition. "For me it works. I feel much more confident going into a race," she said. Head Swimming Coach Bob Krim mel agrees. He said her experiences in the field have helped her both in and out of the pool. "Susan is the most organized, well-prepared, and proba bly the most dedicated person I've ever come into contact with." Her studies, which included an in ternship at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., have alerted her to a broad base of job possibilities and have given her some direction, he said. Tudor's ERA was second among starters in the majors the Mets' Dwight 'Gooden was 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA. The 24-year-old Valenzuela was 17-10 with a 2.45 ERA, but he managed only one victory after Aug. 26. Valenzuela was 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 17 innings against the Cards this season. The game at Dodger Stadium begins at 8:30 p.m. Tomorrow night's second game night, match ing right-handers Joaquin Andu jar of St. Louis and Orel Hershiser of Los Angeles, is scheduled to start at 8:35 p.m. Meanwhile, rain is a distinct possibility. The teams are idle Friday be fore playing the third, fourth and fifth games of the best-of-seven series at St. Louis on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. If sixth and seventh games are necessary, they'll be played at Dodger Stadi um next Wednesday and Thurs day. Tudor will be starting with only three days rest he hurled a four hitter last Saturday as the Cards beat the Chicago Cubs 7-1 to clinch the NL East title. But that doesn't figure to hurt him considering he was 7-0 while pitching with three days rest during the season. While Valenzuela wasn't at his best down the stretch and Hershis er won his last 11 decisions, Los Angeles Manager Tom Lasorda said he didn't have a tough deci sion to make. "I want to pitch Fernando first," Lasorda said. "When the playoffs start, forget about all the records and stats. He's been through this before." Tudor will be appearing in post season play for the first time. Andujar was St. Louis' post-sea son pitching ace when the Cardi nals won the World Series three years ago, but he's had a difficult time recently even though he fin ished the season with a 21-11 re cord and a 3.40 ERA. Manager Whitey Herzog of the Cardinals called Andujar, the only pitcher in the majors to win at least 20 games in each of the last two seasons, the key player in the playoffs. PAM—MATH ED. All have been injured in the last two weeks and probably won't play in the 12:10 p.m. game against N.C. State, 1-4, at Pitt Stadium. The numerous injuries have forced Fazio, in what has become the most important of his four seasons as the Panthers' coach, to make several personnel and position changes. Bob Lawson, a senior, is the only experienced tight end, but Fazio's plans to move converted center Pat Schipani back to tight end were put on hold by the injury to Pettyjohn. The only reserves behind Lawson are freshmen Tom Huebner and David Tanczos. "We are really banged up," Fazio said. As far as Fazio is concerned, the injuries couldn't have come at a worse time. Ft.ORISTS Galbreath, in announcing Tanner's dismissal. "Now, the public can say, 'lt's a fresh start, it's a new start.' " Few teams in major league history have ever under gone the dramatic, top-to-bottom change in ownership, leadership and playing talent as the Pirates will have experienced in a year's time come next spring. "There will be new owners, new management, and, essentially, a new team," Galbreath said. "We feel a fresh start is desirable here," said Prine, the incoming president and chief executive officer of a team that lost a major league-high 104 games this season. "Ownership has decided that such a change was appropriate." Prine and the other members of his public-private coalition apparently concluded that the ever-optimistic Tanner's pat-'em-on-the-back style of managing is better suited to a veteran team than a young club like the current Pirates. "We want a guy who can develop the young players," Prine said. apparently has given renewed confi dence to a team that was only 3-7-1 a season ago. Pitt can match its victory total of a year ago this weekend, and the Pan thers are likely to be favored in their next five games N.C. State, Rutg ers, Navy, Syracuse and Temple before their traditional season-ending game against Penn State. Victories in the five games would assure Pitt of no worse than a 7-3-1 record. "This team has overcome some adversity," Fazio said, referring to late-in-the game losses to Ohio State and Boston College. "They have to understand they have to play every week with the kind of emotion and intensity they had against South Car olina." "I think that we showed even in the losses that we played tough," said Pitt flanker Chuck ScaleS.
