10—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1985 Noll not concerned about past problems By ALAN ROBINSON AP Sports Writer PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh Steel ers Coach Chuck Noll, criticized last week for gambling on a trick play that didn't work, deflected questions yesterday that he may have coached too cautiously in a 2420 loss Sunday to the Miami Dolphins. "You don't worry about the mistak es you made in the past," Noll said. "If you dwell too much on the past, it can lead to mistakes in the future." The Steelers have lost three of their last four, including a 37-23 defeat to Cincinnati in which Noll called a flea flicker pass play that resulted in a costly fumble and a go-ahead Beng als' touchdown. Mistakes at inopportune times, Noll said, cost the Steelers a chance to beat a Dolphins team that handled them easily twice last season, includ ing a 45-28 victory in the American Conference championship game. "They made mistakes, too," Noll said, pointing to two Dan Marino fourth-quarter interceptions, "but ours came at the wrong time. You not only have to eliminate mistakes, you have to eliminate the mistakes that can cost you a game." Noll was asked why he elected early in the fourth quarter, with the score tied 17-17 and the Steelers fac ing a fourth-and-inches situation, to attempt a 44-yard field goal rather than go for the first down. Gary Anderson missed the kick. "You do what you think is right," NOTICE TELEVISION RENTALS, color NEEDED: SPEED READING tea and b&w, long or short term, low cher, Speech backround pre rates. When you get the ball down there, you want to get some points." "I wanted to go for the first down," said quarterback Mark Malone. "The decision was made by the coaches on the sideline. I looked back to tell them we had only a half-yard to go, and the field goal team was coming on the field." Later, during a Steelers' drive that ended in a 33-yard Anderson field goal, Malone said he had a certain pass play in mind, but couldn't call it since neither of his starting wide receivers, John Stallworth or Louis Lipps, was in the game. Noll had inserted reserves Weegie Thompson and Calvin Sweeney be cause he was trying to rest his play ers in the 84-degree heat and humidity of a jam-packed Orange Bowl. Every Steeler played except for reserve quarterback David Wood ley. "We were trying to keep everyone rested," Noll said. "The heat has an effect on you when you're not used to it . . . we were used to it in training camp, but that was five weeks ago. We haven't been practicing in that kind of weather." Noll concedes the heat will remain on his 2-3 Steelers this week when they travel to Dallas to meet the 4-1 Cowboys. The Steelers are in a diffi cult stretch of games that sees them play the Dolphins, Cowboys ,Bengals and Cardinals. Lady linksters win first invite at Yale By KELLY LANKAU Collegian Sports Writer Golf is sometimes known as an individual's sport, but it takes the team total to win or lose a tournament. The women's golf team discovered the benefits of team play as the Lady Lions worked together this weekend to bring home a first-place finish at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn. The first day of play was rained out and the Lady Lions found themselves in a tie for first place at the end of the second day of the tourna ment. By adding in the fifth player's score (which usually does kot count toward the team total), the Penn State team emerged victorious. Both Penn State and James Madison Universi ty ended the 18-hole round with a total of 332. But the Lady Lions' fifth-place finisher, freshman Kirsten Stone, shot an 88 while the player from JMU shot a 96 giving the Lady Lions their first title of the season. Four of the six Penn State players finished in the top 10 of the tournament. Sophomore Sue Dutilly's round of 80 led the Lady Lions and was good for a fourth-place finish. Junior Sue Highdu check, who competed as an individual in the tournament, tied for fifth with an 81. Other top 10 finishers were sophomore Val Krick (82), juniors Lisa Dine (83) and Erin Borowicz (87). William and Mary took third place with a team total of 338. Fourth went to Longwood College, the team that beat Penn State last week at the ECAC Open. . Krick said with only one day of tournament play, the team knew it had to perform well. "With a one-day tournament, we knew we had to just go out there and win it," Krick said. "We thought we could do it if we just kept our heads together." Krick also said this tournament showed the importance of team play and that each player APARTMENTS BOOKS/RECORDS ALBUMS FOR LESS at Disc- 1 or 2 Females Needed Immedl- Count Sound. "The scores were on the higher side," said Assistant Coach Denise St. Pierre, "which shows the difficulty of the course. Everyone played pretty well. It (the course) was playing long because it was wet, but the greens were in real nice shape." It's a difficult and strategic kind of course," Kennedy said. "But their practice day was very good." `With a one-day tournament, we knew we had to just go out there and win it.' —Val Krick, Lady Lion golfer Both the coaches and players agreed that the scores probably would have been lower on the second day if they had been able to shoot the day before. "My players would have played much better the second day. They needed another day to get used to the course," Kennedy said. "I still think they would have won," St. Pierre said. "The course tends to intimidate some of the players. It's the kind of course where you have to keep playing it to get better. Our scores would have been lower the second day." "I think they were psyched up and ready to play," Kennedy said of the Lady Lions' attitude going into the tournament. "I think they were disappointed that they couldn't play the first day." Kennedy also said the first-place victory is a real confidence builder for the team . " d /V,' Is. Pitcher Nolan Ryan, reached at his home near Houston, said he was not aware of Lillis' dismissal but said he was not surprised. "I think with the new general man ager it was to be expected," he said.
