12—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Sept. 6, 1984 Eagles victims of poor management As any football fan knows, another season is upon us. In fact, if you're a fan from PhilUdelphia, September might conjure feelings of dread. Although bound to defend the Ea gles' honor to "outsiders," every Philly fan has the right to offer solu tions to the Birds' problems. Lately, the management seems to think that the problem with the Ea gles is in the lack of young, exciting, unexpectedly explosive talent. They have alleviated that problem by dis posing some of the Eagles' old stand= bys. • s i od e r igt , 2 gam". However, I feel the problem is not in the talent but in the management itself. I think the biggest change that could result in the most good is a new owner. To the wealthy businessman, foot ball should be viewed as tenderly as a favorite hobby. But unfortunately for Philly fans, Tose looks upon the Eagles as a major business investment. In the past, he's used the team-as collaterol for business ventures, thereby bring ing disgrace to Philadelphia's sports image. Tose himself knows he needs more money for the team. Can you remem ber when an interest of the team was going to to be sold to Tose's personal friend who represented a group of Philadelphia area businessmen? Then I'm sure you also remember that they had a very public falling out resulting in court appearances against Tose for reneiging on the deal. And how about the release of Har old Carmichael? No trade, not even rumors of a deal to let him play for another year or so. And other ded icated veterans were released with out the franchise helping them convert to life after football. It seems as though the front office 1984 Ponderosa, Inc. said, "It was nice of you to give your life for the team, but you're too old now. It's been a pleasure." And just think, if the team had some funding and was solid in the office, the morale might better on the field. And maybe with a few extra bucks, the Eagles might get some proper scouting, so they could put together a team of true "yet to be discovered" talent. But, these things seem too much to hope for. Ideally, an owner belongs in his box on Sunday. He should support his team by enthusiasm in emotion and pocketbook. He doesn't belong in the locker rooms or the field. And he certainly doesn't belong in the court rooms of Philadelphia. Tose shouldn't be holding onto the team to make his wealth but hold onto the team 'to spend his wealth. All I have left to say is that the franchise has gone steadily downhill and the recent lack of class hasn't helped endow a losing team . So how can you expect a football team to play well when the front office has so many fouls?
