The Lions are anxious to return to action because poor field conditions have forced the postponement of their last four games. The recent conditions have muddled the pitch ing rotation for the Lions (10-9), who had been scheduled to face Temple and West Chester earlier in the week. Head Coach Shorty Stoner now has all of his pitchers ready and rested, but he must decide AP Laserpholo O renewal The .Weekly Collegian does not publish when classes are not in session first, ruled an error but was later changed to a hit. Mets 5 Expos 4 NEW YORK (AP) Wally Back man stroked a two-out, bases-loaded double in the ninth inning to give New York a 5-4 victory yesterday over the Montreal Expos, snapping a three gaMe losing string. The Mets started their rally against right-handed reliver Jeff Reardon, 0- 1. Darryl Strawberry singled leading off the inning, and after two were out, stole second before Reardon walked John Gibbons. After walking pinch hitter Ron Hodges, loading the bases, Reardon was lifted for Lefty Gary Lucas, who came in to face Backman. The count went to 0-2 before Back man pulled a soft liner into the left field corner, scoring Strawberry and Gibbons. Ed Lynch, 1-0, picked up the victory with two innings of one-hit, scoreless relief. The Mets, who had won six of their first seven games before losing three in a row, led 3-2 by virtue of a Hubie Brooks homer in the fourth when starter Walt Terrell walked Pete Rose with one out in the Expos' seventh. Bryan Little then hit into a fielder's choice, and Tim Raines fol lowed with his second homer of the season, giving Montreal a 4-3 lead. The homer was the 12th hit off Terrell, chasing the Mets right-hand er. , That's the way it stayed until the ninth, with Reardon in relief of start- who to pitch 'against the non-conference teams his club will be facing this afternoon and tomor row, when the squad returns to Beaver Field for a 1 p.m. double-header with Mansfield. Stoner's squad will be facing an unknown entity when it meets a team that swept two games from the Lions last season. The only thing Stoner knows is that Bucknell has one excellent pitcher, but he isn't sure if his squad will face him today. "Last season they hit everything we threw at them," Stoner said. "I'm really not sure what they've lost since last season, but I'm going there expecting a highly competitive double-header." Mike Bellaman is scheduled to start the opener for the Lions. After that, the starter for the er Charlie Lea, who had left for a pinch hitter in the seventh. Brooks' homer, his second, came on a 1-0 pitch from Lea, leading off the fourth. The Mets scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single off the right field wall by Keith Hernandez, who was thrown out by Andre Dawson trying to stretch the hit into a double. Backman reached on an error by shortstop Argenis Salazar in the third, stole second and scored on a double by George Foster. Montreal scored a run in the second on Tim Wallach's RBI hit, the third of four consecutive singles in the inning, and Dawson drove in a run in the third' with' a single. The Expos missed out on several scoring opportunities, notably in the fifth when Rose and Little singled consecutively with none out. Raines laid down a bunt toward the mound, and Terrell's throw hit the runner and bounced, toward the wall. Rose had scored and Little was at third when the Mets protested that Raines had run inside the first-base line. First-base umpire John Kibler called Raines out on offensive interfe rence, sending the runners back and bringing Expos Manager Bill Virdon from the, dugout. After a brief and unsuccessful ar gument, Dawson singled up the mid dle, but Rose was thrown out at the plate by Mookie Wilson, and Terrell got Gary Carter on strikes. Joaquin Andujar checked the Cubs on five hits and David Green drove in three runs with a single and a two-run homer for a 5-0 Cardinal victory in the opener. Buckner, who had driven in a run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly, singled in the first run in the sixth inning' of the second game, following a walk to Ryne Sandberg and a single by Keith Moreland off loser Dave LaPoint, 1-2. Reliever Neil Allen came in and gave Ron Cey an intentional walk to fill the bases and Davis hit his next pitch for a two-run single. Walks to Larry Bowa and winning pitcher Scott Sanderson forced in another run. nightcap will be picked on the basis of what Stoner thinks of Bucknell's offensive potential. Stoner is trying to gear his staff around this weekend's three-game series against St. Bona venture, an Atlantic 10 Conference foe. The Lions are almost halfway through their schedule, but the constant rainouts have made it next to impossible for them to achieve any level of consistency. That is the one part of the season that has bothered Stoner the most because he feels his squad is capable of performing consis tently if the opportunity arises. What the Lions are looking for is a week like this past one, in which the team was able to get in seven games, most of them under sunny skies. 111; Cards We'll put together Cush Basket with any $B.OO pl Come visit us at convenient locat 342 E.
