They were the world champion "Miracle Mets" of 1969, Tug McGraw's "You Gotta Believe" Mets in their National League pennant season of 1973 and, more recently, "The Magic Is Back" Mets. But in the past seven seasons, as the Mets have finished no better than fifth, there were no miracles, no one believed anymore and the magic . . . well, there wasn't any except for their annual disappearing act. This season, 1983 Rookie of the Year Darryl Strawberry may have given the Mets a new slogan. "We've got a dream," he says. "If we continue to believe in our dream, it might come true." And they believe. So far, they have the right to believe. With their 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves Wednesday night, the Mets were off to a 6-1 start, the best of their 23-year history. Their six-game winning streak which followed an 8-1 Opening Day loss in Cincinnati is their longest since 1976 when they put together a seven-game string in April. One of the most impressive things about the Mets' streak is that it has come entirely on the road. Last year the Mets didn't win their sixth road game until June 3. 1 , , C , p 1 oi ' li t 1 , , "I can understand the reasons for riding the Mets," says, Strawberry, hitting .333 through seven games with three homers. "But we've got a lot of good, young players and a new manager (a rookie himself, Dave Johnson). I think we can change all that stuff from the past." Although Mookie Wilson, the Mets center field er, warns, "It's not time for anyone to start running up the pennant yet,", he says the Mets have made their move with sound defense "and our pitching should make us even better. "We've got a winning attitude," adds Wilson, who was off to a .375 start. "That's something you must have from day one. We' have a lot of eagerness. When you have have guys with that attitude, positive things will happen." The enthusiasm and leadership that men like Strawberry and Wilson have brought to the Mets have played a big part in their fast start, but 0 0L , e I 0 '11[,1,0 11 1 1111 • 1 11111 hll 1 , MiMTAT Bak CAI fom Appr. 23/-1881 .::pAsoNn‘s.i AADRVARKSI BALLOONS BAL LOONS and more! UDITORIUM Carter a beneficiary of Rose's assault on Cobb MONTREAL (AP) Every time Pete Rose gets a base hit, the stock of Montreal Expos catcher Gary Carter rises. The reason is simple: Carter, an avid collector of baseball cards, has a '1963 issue of Rose, then in his rookie season with Cincinnati Reds. "It's worth about $BOO today," said Carter, who figures its value will continue to increase as Rwe, now his Expos' teammate, moves in relent lessly on Ty Cobb's all-time hits re cord of 4,191. Rose was a major topic of conver sation yesterday as the Expos worked out on the new artificial turf at Olym pic Stadium in preparation for to day's home opener against Philadelphia Phillies. Rose is one hit shy of two mile stones his next hit will be the 4,000 th of his 22-yea l r career, while his next single will be his 3,000 th, leaving him 52 behind Cobb, the record-hold er in that category as well. "We won't be playing Pete tomor row I guess we'll wait until Satur day when there aren't as many people," said Expos general man ager John McHale jokingly while watching his team from the dugout yesterday. Interest in Rose is such that the Pirates seek PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pitts burgh Pirates had the day off yester day, so the team's management went shopping for a new pay-cable tele vision deal. The Pirates signed a five-year, estimated $5 million pay-TV contract last season with Home Sports Enter tainment, a Warner-Amex Cable owned sports channel. "But you had to hit the ball well to get a triple in Crosley Field."
