PSU has summer camp
for computer whiz kids
By GRACE LoMONACO
Collegian Staff Writer
With the computer age upon us,
elementary and high school students
can get a head start for the future by
attending the computer camps of
fered by the University this summer.
Melinda Harr, conference coordi
nator at the Keller Conference Cen
ter, said the camps, co-sponsored by
Continuing Education and the College
of Education, are being offered to
students between the ages of 12 and 17
to learn introductory computer skills.
Mike Patrilak, Continuing Educa
tion and State College High School
teacher, said the students learn to
type and run programs and complete
exercises in a text during the six-day
camp.
During the first day of cqmp, stu
dents are instructed in the program
ming language LOGO, which was
developed at Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, Patrilak said. The
language BASIC is taught during the
remainder of the week.

“(LOGO) is a programming lan

gramming techniques, in particular,
at the elementary and secondary
levels,” Patrilak said.
Although most of the students have
no background in microcomputer op
eration, they will cover 27 lessons
including low resolution graphics.
Harr said the classes are held from
8-30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday
through Thursday, Wednesday and
Thursday evenings and for half a day
on Fridays.
Sunday evening, the students are
taken on a tour of the campus and the
computer facilities, she said. The
students also go to Stone Valley Rec

evening, she said.
The students stay in the University
dorms and eat in the cafeteria, Harr
said.

for 12 years. In 1979-80, he chaired the
House Agriculture Committee. A Uni

with a bachelor’s of science.
Saying he has “no chips on my
shoulder” and “no axes to grind,”
Thomas stressed that he would at
tempt to ensure that the University’s
College of Agriculture is treated
fairly in budgetary matters.
“I’m interested in seeing that agri
culture doesn’t get a back seat when
all the dollars are handed out,” said
Thomas, co-owner of Brooks End
Farm, which produces purebred
Yorkshire and Landrace breeding
swine.
Because there “has never been a
healthy economy without a healthy
agriculture,” Thomas said he “does
not want to see agriculture short
changed.”

Committee's bill
harsher warning
By TOM SEPPY
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON A harsher warn
ing would be placed on cigarette
packages and advertising if a bill
approved yesterday by the Senate
Labor and Human Resources Com
mittee becomes law.
Under a proposal sponsored by Sen.
Thomas F. Eagleton, D-Mo., the la
bels would read:, “Warning! Ciga
rette smoking causes CANCER,
EMPHYSEMA, HEART DISEASE;
may complicate PREGNANCY, and
is ADDICTIVE.”
Cigarette packages and advertising
now must carry: ‘Warning: The Sur
geon General Has Determined That
Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous to
Your Health.”
The committee adopted Eagleton’s
measure by a vote of 15-1, with Sen.
John P. East, R-N.C., dissenting. The
panel then voted 15-1-1, with East
again dissenting and Sen. Dan
