14—The Daily Collegian Thursday, April 21, 1983 Basketball needs a fair shake In media coverage and fan interest, major league baseball dominates professional basketball. Be it ;October or April, Bowie Kuhn's game overshadows Larry O'Brien's on the sports page and in television exposure. -Basketball doesn't even get a chance to capture the nation's attention. Baseball smothers the NBA season from the first opening tipoff in October to the last desperation shot in May. , When' the basketball training camps open in September, baseball's pennant races start to heat Up. When the NBA regular season is ready to begin in mid-October, it's World Series time. • From November to February, which used to be basketball's chance to capture the sport scene with only hockey to compete with, the major league came up with new ploys to keep America's pastime in the papers free agent signings, arbitration and those ever populdr winter meetings in some tropi cal paradise. In March, when NBA clubs are fighting for playoff berths, stories of spring training openings and pictures of Fernando Valcnzuela "stretching out the winter kinks" infiltrate the climax of the NBA's season. Forget the playoffs. It's time for opening day and all the "excitement" of seeing new faces in new places. It's time for the Blue Jays or Cubs to get a chance to sit atop the standings until the real teams start to play up to their potential. Meanwhile, the best basketball being played on the face of the earth must take a back seat. I think it's time sports editors and television news editors gave the 'NBA a fair shake. I agree the regular season does have its dull moments that riced not be reported heavily. But the playoffs showcase the best individual efforts along with the best team play neccessary to win a championship. Baseball will go unopposed from July to Septem ber, when their season hits the television and deserves top billing, but for now it should be Caddying for basketball instead of the other way around. Some have noted that foot ball has placed itself there for a few more years with the naming of Bruce Parkhill as the program's new coach. Fans expected Penn State to go the "name coach route" and go after Lute Olson or George Raveling. Well they did that five years ago when they brought Dick Harter back east from Oregon. Obviously it didn't work out. Sure they had winning seasons. But the players were unhappy and you didn't see Harter smile much either. With the naming of Parkhill, Penn State has a coach who will fit into the program rather than be the program. The basketball roster is not blessed with the best talent in the East, but the players are capable of making a post-season tournament under the right guidance. Harter tried to mold the team into his image of how a team should play regardless of what his team's limitations were. Parkhill, realizing that Penn State does not have a dazzling individual performer, plans to mold his team based on what his individuals can do best. Next year's team will be a small, but quick team. With the departure of Mike Lang, the Lions lose their only bulk under the boards so rebounding will be a problem. This will call for an offense that will yield a high percentage shot each time down the court. The running game will come because of the team A BEAVER TERRACE apartment, summer sublet with fall option. Call Jim or Dale 238-6556 2 LJ speed and the press will be neccessary in order to keep the opposition from setting up their offense and exploiting the size and strength advantages most teams will have against Penn State. Parkhill has already said he will feature this type of play next season, which should make fans realize that the man will try to do whatever is necessary for the team to receive a post-season tournament spot. He has already built up one program at William and Mary and if he keeps his enthusiasm and optimism at the same level he had at last week's press conference, he should do a similar job at Penn State. Back to baseball, a statistician's delight. Baseball offers figures in almost every concievable catago ry. Looking over the official final figures for the National and American Leagues, I noticed a cu rious distinction. For some reason, the NL des full first names while the AL is content with using the shorter versions of first names and nicknames. For example, last years NL batting champ was Albert Oliver. The Dodgers' Johnnie Baker was Bth on the hitting charts while W. McKinley (Max) Venable batted a lowly .224. Jeron Royster and Terrance Kennedy each hit .295. Frank McGraw did not record a save while W. Timothy. Lollar - compiled a 3.13 ERA The AL lists amongs its stats Bobby's, Willie's, Tommy's, one Bucky, one Moose, and one Tippy. No wonder the Nationals have won the last three World Series and the last umpteen all-star games, they just take the game more seriously. Ending with a basketball note, out of all the literary excellance that graces the walls of Pattee Library lavatories, this saying is the most frequently found (other then sexual preferance ditties) and probably the most true: Nobody, but nobody i deserves more than Moses Malone. Heavily recruited Popson chooses North Carolina KINGSTON, Luzerne County (AP) Dave Popson, one of the na tion's most heavily recruited high school basketball players, an nounced yesterday he will play for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Popson, a 6-10, 195-pound center from Bishop O'Reilly High School here, said at a news conference that he decided last night between UNC and Notre Dame, his final two choices from an original field of 150 schools. A three-time Associated Press All-State selection and member of several prep All-America teams, Popson said he chose North Caroli na because he had always wanted to play at the Atlantic Coast Con ference school. He said he was also pleased at the prospect of playing under Tar Heel Coach Dean Smith, who led the Tar Heels to the National Col legiate Athletic' Association championship in 1982. "Every body knows Dean Smith is a great coach," he said. Popson said he made his deci sion Tuesday night after meeting for 2'/2 hours with Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps at the Pop= son home in Ashley, Pa. Phelps was "very upset" with the choice of North Carolina, Pop son said. Smith, at the news conference here, said, "I'm very pleased he's coming to North Carolina. ' The UNC coach said he plans to use Popson as a forward and hopes he will develop into a big forward who can put the ball on the floor. "He has the tangibles as well as the intangibles. He runs extremely well for a guy his size. He has very good hands, and he jumps well. The intangibles are that he is. a great competitor and he is very dedicated," said Smith. During his four, years at Bishop O'Reilly, which compiled a 127-27 record, Popson started every game and averaged 20.2 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots per game. Smith said he will put the spind ly Popson on a weight training program to develop his upper body strength and hopes to have him weighing 220 by his senior year. Popson's high school coach; Jim Mahon, said, "David has made the right decision : " Popson had narrowed his choic es to UNC, Notre Dame, Kentucky and Virginia. He said he began leaning toward North Carolina after his initial visit to the Chapel Hill campus last fall. He said he was told he would not start as a freshman.
