I4—The Daily Collegian Monday, April 18, 1983 Lady taxers dominate Rutgers By SANDY KNAISCH Collegian Sports Writer The women's lacrosse team recovered from its loss against Temple last Thursday yesterday to whip Rutgers 20-5 and give Head Coach Gillian Rattray her 100th win in her 10-year career. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to rain. Penn State had a record-setting offensive attack from senior Laurie Hoke, who scored four goals against Rutg ers to give her a career total of 101 goals making her the fifth Lady Lion to do so. Sophomore Marsha Florio and freshman Beth Thompson each reached career scoring records of seven goals and four goals, respectively. Other F erm State goals were made by Betsy Williams and Laurie gray, who each had two goals, and Barb Jordan tallied one. Rattray said she found Rutgers less skilled and slower than the Temple squad the Lady Lions faced last week. Because of the pace of the game, Rattray was able to sS;titch her offensive players to various positions to give them an added edge, a move she said worked well. Junior Betsy Williams was switched from her usual Position of third home to attack wing. She said that the move was one she felt comfortable with. "I just switched to attack wing and then had to be able to find a connecton mid-field," Williams said. "We had trouble at first but we organized pretty well. We used it befoe in games and in practice and we felt pretty good SAL'S PLACE PRAYER IS EFFECTiFVE Tonight at the ( -.) - in l / 2 . 41 : 164 " 41 ' IN OUR ECONOMY . 'MOS • iLARGE PIZZA / 320 z. Ferrara, who is Rutgers' leading scorer, started in the goal, a position she has played in field hockey, but never in lacrosse. Before the first half was over Ferrara was switched to her usual position as a home and was able to score a goal for Rutgers. Rattray said that the team learned from its last game against Temple and was able to put some of its new knowledge to use in a game situation. "We're getting better on our shots," Rattray said. "We're increasing our shot percentage (to 66 percent) and becoming more patient." Penn State goalie Lynn Mattson started the game and allowed three goals in the first half and had three saves. Mattson shared the duties in the cage with Sally Ratcliffe, who came in for the second half. Ratcliffe allowed two goals, one coming off a draw and the other deflected off a defensive player's stick. Ratcliffe made five saves. Rattray said that having two players share the goalie position is reassuring. "Sally started on Thursday and Lynn played JV (in the) last game and did extremely well," Rattray said, "We need them both sharp for post-season so we're trying to share time." Rattray said that the most important factor in the team's play against Rutgrs was that the team is playing well together and the passing game is improving. May 7, 8 444 E. Unfortunately for the fourth ranked Lions, their part in history has been postponed. Penn State fell victim to the even tual champion, the No. .3 Pepper dine Waves (17-4) in the opening round Friday night, then faltered again in the consolation round against the fifth-rated Santa Barba ra Gauchos, whose record now stands at 21-7. In finishing last, the Lions wiped out their chances of grabbing the elusive top ranking during the regu lar season, and will have to wait until the National Collegiate Athlet ic Association championships on *, • BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL w RETROSPECTIVE ON THE 60'S PROPECTS FOR THE 90'S * PROGRAM 4 AFRICAN AND AFRO-AMERICAN ART EXHIBIT/Paul Robeson Cultural Center *- -* For Further Information, Please Contact The 1 1 . • . No. 2 UCLA topped Santa Barba ra Friday night to reach the championship game, and, in the wake of three successive losses suffered by previously top-ranked Hawaii (10-5), would have taken over the top spot with a win over the Waves. Pepperdine, however, maintained the upper hand in the five-game match, and should earn the No. 1 title in the next national poll. The Lions found themselves on the short end of a 14-11 tally In the first game against Pepperdine, but fought back and took the game from the Waves, 16-14. But Penn State's fire fizzled out, and as the Lions fell victim to their own mis shits and net violations, they dropped the next three games 15-3, 15-9, and 15-11. "But then we just made a lot of our own mistakes. That's how they got most of their points." Kegerreis said the Lions were equal to, if not more talented than their West Coast adversaries, but they made too many unforced er rors to fare well against such sharply tuned opponents. "After Friday night's match in which we played pretty poor we got together in the locker room and we got alot of stuff figured out," Ke gerreis said. "Hopefully we got things ironed out and it's going to help us through the Eastprns and into the NCAAs. "After we lost Friday night ev eryone was really down because they wanted to win so badly and get into the finals against UCLA. And they came back really well Satur day and played a good match, so it's looking better for us." IMITED Fresh & Salad Bar ~~ ~~ :~ 1 99 „Art iti(b OTTAGE ily Restaurants ILLIP - 9111111 1 1 6.
