14—The Daily Collegian Thursday, April 14, 1983 Indians on the warpath again When sports fans think of futility, they think of 'Cleveland the Cavaliers in basketball, the Browns' disappointing dive the past few seasons, and the NHL's Barons, who did not last long enough for Cleveland fans to really ignore. Do you notice something missing? Right, it's the Cleveland Indians, or the Tribe as they are known to their most loyal fans. Yes, it's true it's, been almost 30 years since they have been in the World Series and set an American League record with 111 victories. (By the way, ask your father about the catch Willie Mays made on a Vic Wertz fly ball in the series). And they did tie for last place in the East Division last year, so they have been futile. That's being kind. But things might be changing for the Indi an.s. They are a team of character with only one way to go up. Almost everyone knows of the off-season acquisitions that have turned them into a farm club for the Phillies. But during that winter and past off-seasons, the Indians have had problems that would affect anyone's play on the diamond. A few years ago, Andre Thornton, who batted .273 while hitting 32 home . runs and knocking in 116 RBIs in 1982, lost his wife and dailghter in an automobile crash. He has overcome that heartache and at 33 has more than a few good seasons left. • Last May, newly acquired Bake Mcßride had his season stalled by a freak accident. Hitting .365, Mcßride was forced out of the '4 The Collegian in the, c, morning .an ey.e- opening experience! He's back, hoping to get in a full season with fellow outfielder and ex-Phil George Vukovich. The sad tales go on. Toby Harrah, the ninth leading batter in the American League last year, had more to do in the winter than just try to keep in shape. First, he had open heart surgery. Then his house burnt to the ground and like Thornton, lost a close family member in a car mishap. The mere fact that Harrah could concen trate on a pasttime like baseball , when life's Walls were closing in is amazing. And to do it in front of pennant-starving fans each night makes his comeback even more impressive. -. ~E The Indians are led by Mike Ferraro, who is probably best known as the coach who sent a Yankee around third in a playoff against Kansas City. That was the series ABC kept their camera more on the press area than on the playing field. ' Well, Ferraro had a nice off-season. A new job with the opportunity to mold a team comprised of both youth and age. But some thing was wrong. He had a malignant kidney. It was removed just days before spring train ing started. He was out there for the first roll call, but must still be feeling the effects of the operation. Meanwhile, the Tribe's front office had to field cries of dismay in the Von Hays-for-half of-South-Philly trade. Hays was loved at Municipal Stadium by fans who had hopes of seeing the youngster bloom into a star. Well there's always NBC's Game of the Week. But they will have a chance to see a new double-play combination go to work to pull the Indiaus out of the cellar. Manny Trillo and Julio Franco should form an excellant duo. Mike Hargrove at first and Harrah at third fill out a better-than-average infield. Chris Ban do will handle the catching, but look out for another ex-Phillie, (yep, they have eight of them) Jim Essian,' to push Bando for the position. The pitching staff is full of potential, but most only show it in early April. Former Pirate Bert. Blyleven comes back from a harrowing elbow injury in which the muscle was tornpway from the bone. Len (Perfect Game) Barker is good for 12-15 wins, so the Indians just might play an important game in July for the first time in a long time. It's August and September that bother me. Cleveland is turning the corner just when the American League East is starting to become the majors' toughest division. The Milwaukee resurgence reached one step from the top last year. The Tigers are, better than ever. The Oriole and Yanks are always troublemakers. Boston, like the Indians, are a team of mixed ages and are bound to get better and there's even,p little optimism north of the border in T9P6nto. frr SUMMER 1983 , _ .:.------ 4 .5.1 . . . , • /"; e.- le - e .." —, ,••• r . ,x. _ . . 4 . j/ • -If ' . ~) ) I - ' 0 •-• -- " ' sr - Leg L 1,.„ ,____,.. c .....,, , r.„ __.---'Tr'-b., .4 , 1 . As usual, a Cleveland sports francise is a minute too late and a nickel short. But they deserve credit.
