Sefter redshirts, Heller joins By ANDRIJA SILICH Collegian Sports Writer With the conclusion of the football season, Wrestling Coach Rich Loren zo received some bad news and some good news. The bad news was that All-American junior Steve Sefter has decided to redshirt this season and not represent the Lions in the heavy weight class. The good news however, may be just good enough to overshadow the bad. Lorenzo learned earlier this week that Sefter's football teammate Ron Heller has decided to fill the gap left in the heavweight class. Sefter compiled a 105-4 record and was a two-time Pennsylvania state champion for Cedar Cliff High School in New Cumberland. In his first match as a Penn State wrestler he pinned Lehigh's Drew Keiser, a 275 pound Eastern Intercol legiate Wrestling Association cham pion. That was to be just the begining of an illustrious career. He concluded his freshman year with a sixth-place finish at the National Collegiate Ath letic Association tournament, and received All-American status. Because of his obligation to the football team, he was only able to wrestle in 13 matches last year, but he made the best of them by compil ing a flawless 13-0 record. "I've done it for two years and I need a break, especially mentally," Sefter said. Although far from being definite, his future plans are to compete in both sports again next year, and to return to school for a fifth year and dedicate a full season to wrestling. In his first two years on the football team, Sefter competed in the Fiesta Bowl and didn't start his wrestling season until January. As a result, by the time he felt he was at full capacity the season was coming to an end. "I was back on the mat in a few weeks, but I wasn't nearly ready," Sefter said. "To get all the rust out of my system took about a month and a half. By then it was already post season tournament time." Sefter plans on working just as hard on his wrestling this season even though he will not be competing. He likes, the idea of being able to work out with the team all season without the pressures of getting ready as soon as possible. "I'll have time to work on different techniques," Sefter said. "There will be no urgency of getting ready for matches in a couple of days. I'll have the advantage of being able to really get ready." The main difficulty in the transition Sefter emphasized, is time. LAST CHANC The Family Clothesline Is, Closing On Jan. 15 To Prepare For Our Move To 352 E. Although Sefter will be missed, Lorenzo feels confident in • Heller's ability to take over the heavyweight spot in the lineup. Heller, a junior from Farmingdale, N.Y., was New York State heavy weight champion his senior year in high school, but hasn't wrestled since that time. But Lorenzo is still optimistic. "He's (Heller) awesome," Lorenzo said, "6 -foot-6, 258 pounds and a 35- or 36-inch waist. That's a big boy." Lorenzo said Heller has the perfect body size for a heavyweight wrestler, and he feels that Heller has the right attitude as he reenters the sport. "He has a good attitude and he wants to do it," Lorenzo said, "and that's the most important thing." Lorenzo said they, are anxious to start working with him and are pleased with his decision to join the team. "It will be an adjustment for him going from high school wrestling to the collegiate level," Lorenzo said. "Only time will tell how much he has missed it." :•42. • . • r iv r • , SALE 30016;60 0 /o ',off 4 ';‘) • WOOtS' • CORDUROYS ~ .ALTRA KITS • ,&MUCH MORE!, 2. , <t E. College Ave,. Allen 237-1946 cers feel break will help against Geneseo State By STEVE TOW Collegian Sports Writer Most people are finding it rather difficult to get into the swing of things after holiday break for the ice hockey team, however, the break may have come at just the right time. The Lions had gotten off to a medio cre 7-5-1 start, struggling with such beatable teams as Buffalo State and the Junior Flyers. The pressure of losing just seemed to build and build until the team's attitude and game, was affected. Nevertheless, things may be looking up for Penn State, as high .scoring winger Brad Rush out for three weeks with mononucleosis will play this weekend against Gene seo State. The team also seems to be looking better in practice. "Everyone came back in good shape," Center Glenn DeStefano said. "Guys have been a lot more aggressive lin practice they're hit ting harder." Penn State Coach Jon Shellington agrees. "l think the break came at a good time," he said. "It gave everybody a chance to relax a little bit. The guys were a little down. With Rush's absence, Norm Jacobs was moved into the right wing posi tion on DeStefano's line. Jacobs played well enough to remain at right wing now that Rush is back. Now, along with the line of Toby Ritner, Matt Glass, and Joe Grainda, Jacobs' line could be the most potent the Lions have to offer. "lt was great the last three week ends," Jacobs said. "It was great to be playing with Glenn it's such a compliment to be playing with him. The best time in my hockey career was last year playing with those guys (Rush and DeStefano)." "I think Glenn has the natural ability to put the puck in the net," Shellington said. "Some guys look to set up a play, Norm knows he has the strength to get the puck. He's more beneficial to us to be a playmaker, rather than the goal scorer." Geneseo State brings with them a team very much like Cortland State, whom the Lions lost to decisively before break. Passing was lacking in the Cortland game as was forecheck ing. He's also got us shouting for the passes. We've got to yell . . . we've got to go around like we own the place." Besides working on forechecking and passing in practice, Shellington is still aiming to perfect the penalty killing unit a Lion strength. The only thing needed was an actual unit of players for consistency rather than having players come in somewhat at random. When possible, the Penn State coach will go with forwards Clark Dexter and Art McQuillan on one shift and DeStefano and Rush on the other. The defensemen will be varied. As far as the power play, which is not such a strength, Shellington will go with Ritner and DeStefano's lines.
