Student Trustee Paul Bell said he will write to Gov. Dick Thornburgh in January asking him to choose a stu dqnt when Bell's three-year term ends next year. Also, the selection committee should give special consideration to honor societies, Steve Ripp, USG Senate President said. But, "Using (honor societies) is an abhorration of what you're trying to accomplish," said Interfraternity Council President Luke Taiclet. For example, the new trustee must have an "all-University perspec tive," realizing the large size and the numerous research facilities operat ing at the University, he said. The decision eliminates from a stopgap spending bill the $9BB million Reagan requested to produce the first five of the 100 nuclear-tipped weapons he wants to build. But it retained $2.5 billion in research and devel opment money for the missile, although most of that money can't be spent until Congress approves a basing mode. Jack Edwards, R-Ala., a key MX supporter in the House. The compromise was approved by voice vote as the conferees worked out differences between the House and Senate versions of a stopgap funding bill. The compromise provides that sometime after next March 1, Reagan has to tell Congress about his plans to base the missile. Both houses of Congress would then have to approve the basing mode within 45 days or it could not go ahead. c. copyright 1982 SCOA Ind. Inc
