PA 16802 - • , PSU pres. candidates still unnamed By DINA DEFABO Collegian Staff Writer With the first round of interviews completed, no names of University presidential candidates have been disclosed. However, the chairman of the Trustee Presi dential Selection Committee said the original field of 301 candidates included 20 nominees now closely asso ciated with the University. At Friday's University Board of Trustees meeting,. Quentin E. Wood, whO is also president of Quaker State Oil Refining Corp., said a second set of interviews is being scheduled. However, Wood did not disclose the number of candidates still under consideration. Eight names were recommended to the selection committee in May, but because several of those recom mended became ineligible, the selection committee asked the Presidential Search and Screen Committee for a second list of candidates. Wood said although he can make no guarantee, he hopes the selection committee will recommend a final presidential candidate to the board for approval at its The Daily Collegian Monday, Sept. 13, 1982-3 November meeting University President John W. Oswald, who has been with the University for 12 years, plans to retire next June. In a progress report on the search process, Wood summarized the backgrounds of the presidential candi dates. Seventy percent of the 301 original candidates were in academia at public institutions and 80 percent of those considered were affilitated with large universi ties. Eighty-one candidates were university or campus presidents or chancellors. Twenty women and 13 individuals from racial mi norities were among those initially considered. Also, the majority of the candidates did not apply but were nominated for the position, and they represented 45 of the 50 states. Of the 301 original candidates, Wood said 72 individu als withdrew from consideration, several soon after learning of their nomination. Wood also told the trustees he was impressed with the field of candidates.
