Dr. Sally Ride, 31, and Air Force Lt. Col. Guion S. Bluford, 39, named last week to fly on the space shuttle next year, said they felt some pressure at being "historical figures," but added there have been no problems: Ride was selected as a mission special ist for the seventh flight of the space shuttle, a six-day mission scheduled for April 1983. Bluford will . fly as a mission specialist on the three-day eighth mission set for July of next year. Both astronauts said the media was placing too much emphasis on their dif ferences. "It's an historical fact more than any thing else," said Bluford, one of three black men in the astronaut corps. "The press makes more of it than I do." "We knew it was going to be an event, " Ride said. "But I'm so eager to go up in the shuttle that I'm willing to put up with just about anything." Ellen, If they only knew how we put a little Greek in our Week!! Congrats on a job well done. Plow let's celebrate! Love, R-313 Your Exec Staff ST. PAUL'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 250 E. "As soon as NASA developed the mission specialist role and went out looking for qualified scientists, they had no choice but to select some women. There were women who were qualified." Bluford said "it would have been diffi cult" for a black to have been selected any earlier. "In the past there were few black test pilots and most of the astronauts were test pilots," he said. "It (the selection) came at about the right time. We now have black test pilots in the office as well .as black mission specialists." The job of mission specialist on shuttle missions is to operate payload instru ments and experiments. The actual fly ing of the craft is handled by the two pilot crewmen. Ride said she foresees no problem with finding privacy aboard the shuttle, a ship with much more cabin room than was aboard the Apollo spacecraft. Shuttle restroom facilities, she said, "are just like a lavatory on Earth." Asked where she would Sleep in space, Ride said: "Probably upside down in some corner." Astronauts Sally K. Ride and Guion S. Bluford will make space history as they go on flight seven and eight next year. •••••••0• • • • • • • • • • • • • This Weekend at the Brewery • • • • Tohoko Freeway • • • • and • • • Terry Whitlock for • • Happy Hours on Friday • • Suzio Wong oggrolls nightly 10-2 ••••••••• • ••• • • • • • * . 4 * Pollock-Nittany Spring Week. 4 * 4 * .
