20—The Daily Collegian Friday, April 2, 1982 Anchors away for Lion golfers The men's golf team opens its season this weekend at the two-day, 36-hole Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The tournament features 21 teams, with each team sending six players and the five low scores counting. The Lions, who placed fourth at the invitational last year, are a young team but are looking to place in the top three this year. "It's a good tournament and a tough golf course" Penn State coach Joe Eagles' Bergey ends 13-year career By RALPH BERNSTEIN AP Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA (AP) Linebacker Bill Bergey of the Philadelphia Eagles retired from the National Football League yesterday, saying simply "I know that I can't play any more football." Bergey, 37, announced the end of his 13-year pro career at an emotionally charged news conference in which coach Dick Vermeil broke down and cried. A damaged knee that sidelined him the entire 1981 season did not respond to rehabilitation, and Bergey decided it never would be able tu withstand the rigors of NFL competition. It was punctuated with a background song, "That's What Life Is All About," sung by the late Bing Crosby. "When we play well, we can beat anybody" Baer said. "If everyone plays his own game, we have a shot at taking the whole thing." "I'm looking' forward to going" Tharrington said. "I think we're going to surprise some people." He's the foundation of everything we believe in. There will be only one Bill Bergey in my career. I'm going to miss him." Bergey returned the compliment: "I've never been associated with a guy who had more knowledge of football and people...He says I'm the foundation. That's a bunch of bull. Dick Vermeil is the foundation around here." Bergey, who spoke in a strong, resonant voice, said the only regret in a career that included four Pro Bowl games, was not being a member of a world championship team. He came close. The Eagles reached the Super Bowl in 1981, Bergey's last active season, but lost to Oakland*. EFFICIENCY SUMMER SUBLET. Taking advantage of an illegal stick curvature penalty that gave Philadel phia a one-man advantage, Darryl Sittler scored with 30 seconds remaining to give the Flyers a 3-3 tie with the Islanders in a National Hockey League game last night. "It better not happen again with us," Arbour said. "The manufacturers are the ones who make them illegally, so it's partially not our fault. I'm just glad it happened now and not, in the playoffs," Arbour said. With 1:18 remaining in the game,.New York winger Anders Kallur received a two-minute minor penalty for playing with a stick exceeding the maximum half-inch curvature. Philadelphia then pulled goaltender Pete Peeters off the ice to take a two-man advantage and set up the tying score. Flyers captain Bill Barber said Kal lur's stick "just looked big to me." "It wasn't that much over. I figured it was a 50-50-chance that it was over," Barber said. Kallur said, "I order them legal. "I guess it's tough for the company that makes them to make them all the same size. I never thought ther Flyers would try that tactic." Stefan Pcrsson's fifth goal of the sea son at 3:15 of the third period had given, the Islanders a 3-2 lead. Close checking by the Islanders early in the game had kept the Flyers from getting a shot on goal until more than nine minutes had elapsed in the opening period. Duane Sutter took ,a pass from Wayne Merrick on a two-on-one break and shot a 15-footer past Peeters at 8:36 of the first period to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead. Ken Linseman tied the scpre at 1-1 when he stole a pass from Islanders center Bryan Trottier and beat New York goalie Billy Smith to the top of the net at 3:09 of the second period. Bill Barber blasted a slap shot from the point at 5:10 of the second period to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. The Lady Lions meet LaSalle Univer sity for a double-header today at 2:30 and 4:30 and Temple University for another double-header at 1 and 3 to morrow. Last year LaSalle captured first place in the Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women championships and finished seventh in the country among Division II schools. But Penn State, which has never . played LaSalle before, doesn't really know what to expect from the Explorers. "They are known for their sports programs," Lady Lion coach Sue Rankin said. "But last yea'r is the first year they went anywhere in softball." LaSalle benefits from the play of junior outfielder Kathy McGahey, who is a first-team All-American. But the only thing Penn State will worry about is its own aggressive game plan. COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIED ADS ( LITTLE pieces' .OF EIATH FOR sme••• zz. fr . t, . But the Lady Lions have met Temple before in many a close game. Penn State assistant coach Kim Seevers said that softball compe tition between the two schools has grown into quite a rivalry. Seevers added that past games against Temple have always been exciting no matter which school comes out on top, and, as usual, Penn State expects a tough game from the Owls. -The Lady Lions will take four pitch ers with them this weekend. The start ing pitchers will be Rayne Yori and Brenda Frey, but relief pitchers Ron da Burg and Betty Jo Maule are an important asset to the team. "Betty Jo and Ronda will probably s, some action this weekend," Seev ers said. Both Penn State coaches said they feel the team is ready to go. WHOEVER finds it please bring to HUB WANTED Netmen to face Ivy League foes By GREG LODER Collegian Sports Writer When the men's tennis team defeated Pittsburgh on Wednesday, 9-0, with all of its wins coming in straight sets, the Lions realized that matches like that one will be few and far between this spring. It's not that the team doesn't have the capability to shut out some of its oppo nents, but the schedule Penn State is playing this spring consists of teams that will not allow matches to be won that easily. The Lions have one of the tough est schedules in the country. This weekend the Lions are away to face two of those teams Columbia tomorrow and Yale on Sunday: Along with Columbia and Yale, the Lions will play, during the rest of the season, most of the Ivy League, which includes powers such as Harvard and Princeton. Also on the schedule will be most of the . schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference, which provides some of the best tennis on the East Coast and in the country, next to some of the California schools. This schedule, against which the Lions sometimes hope to be able to just keep their heads above water, is the only thing the tennis program has to offer to its recruits, Penn State coach Holmes Cath rall said. "The purpose is to play the good tea ms," Cathrall said. "We can't offer mon ey (scholarships), so we have to offer the IM TEAMS! "The philosophy of each coach is dif ferent. I'd rather play the good teams all the time." Some of the teams the Lions'play, like a few of the weaker teams on the sched ule, are only on the schedule because of football commitments between Penn State and other schools, like Pitt, which are carried over to other sports, Cathrall said. Penn State will also play teams outside Brown starts Lady Lion spring As sunshine and warmer weather signal the beginning of spring, so, too, does the beginning of the women's tennis team's season. The Lady Lions, under head coach Kim Muller and assistant coach Jan Bortner, will open their season at 1:30 this afternoon against Brown University. The match will held at the women's varsity courts behind the Indoor Sports Complex barring windy conditions, which would force the match inside to the courts of the Penn State Tennis Club. "We're expecting a good, solid match," Muller said. The Brown match will be Penn State's first taste of competi tion since winter practices began in early January. The Lady Lions, who are the defending Middle States Tennis Association team champions, are led by senior co-captains Carol Daniels and Donna Dißenzo. Daniels, the 1981 Middle States singles champion, will occupy the No. 1 singles spot for the second year in a row, a spot in which she earned a 4-3 record during the 1981 fall season.
