12—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, March 30, 1982 Netmen's Christian a smash After only the first four matches for the men's tennis team, the lone freshmen in the starting lineup has found out adjusting to collegiate level tennis is not has hard as it seems. Virgil Christian is the only freshman playing for the Nittany Lions. Christian is more than just adjusting. Currently he is playing second singles for the Nittany Lions. Christian, who lives in the Pittsburgh area, will be going home when Penn State will be away at Pitt this afternoon. Lion coach Holmes Cathrall said Christian's adjustment was a little hard at first. "(Christian) gets a littlo nervous," Cathrall said. "But he is getting over it now. •"He was a little tentative. Tomorrow we are not playing a team of usual caliber and he should play well." But only in his first season, the left-hander is playing second singles for the team, which has to be a tough role for the freshman, Cathrall said. - "It's tough to put a freshman up that high," Cathrall said, "and expect him to come through. He has done a very good job Griffin Bucs' ace-up-the-sleeve By RALPH BERNSTEIN AP Sports Writer BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) Pittsburgh Pirates fans should see a lot of pitcher Tom Griffin if manager Chuck Tanner means what he says at the club's spring training camp. "He can start, pitch long relief or short relief," said Tanner. "It will depend on the makeup of the team when we come north. . I'll make my decision when I have an idea of what kind of staff, I've got to work with." ' Griffin was acquired at December's winter baseball meet ings from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Doe Boyland. The Pirates are his fifth major league club. Griffin said he was prepared for any or all of the three chores Tanner mentioned. "But I prefer starting. It's no secret," said the 34-year-old right-hander who was used exclusively in that role last year by the Giants. It was the first season since 1974 at Houston that Griffin wasn't cast at least part-time as a reliever. "I did it all at San Francisco, long, middle, short, and then last year I started all season long," said the 6-3 pitcher who worked three seasons for the Giants. He recorded eight victories, his highest win total since 1976, when he won nine pitching for Houston and later San Diego. He had a 3.77 ERA in the strike-shortened 1981 season, and registered his I,oooth major league strikeout. Griffin said he was surprised, not just that he was traded, but that the Giants dealt a number of pitchers from a staff he said was the third best in the National League last season. "A good pitching staff is a Tare commodity in today's game, especially with the injuries that crop up," said Griffin, who has a 76-91 career major league record. Griffin said he has recovered from back spasms that ended his season Aug. 24. "I'm throwing loose and without any discomfort," he said before a workout at the Pirates' camp. Griffin explained that he pitched well for the Giants last season because it was the first time since 1974 that he could concentrate on nothing but a starting role. "I couldn't remember the last time I started all season long," said the 210-pounder. COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIED ADS :..,:'...:,.. E :: : 'f . 0 : ..R. E ,.::. : ,5 . 0:1..f.:;.:: . Cathrall said the strongest point of the freshman's game is, his serve, but he still has to work on his net play. "He is very quick and his left-handed serve is as good or , better as anyone on the team," Cathrall said. "When he comes to net he is not decisive and in collegiate play if you don't put the first volleS , away, you will probably be passed." Tomorrow the freshman and the team will probably have their easiest match of the young season. Although in almost' every sport the Penn State - Pitt rivalry is ruthless, Cathrall said the rivalry has never been there for men's tennis. "They haven't had the kind of teams that we've had," Cathrall said. "Our program is being de-emphasized and there is even being more de-emphasized. Their coach has done a super job and he doesn't get anything." Penn State is coming off a Virginia trip last weekend where it split matches, defeating William & Mary 5-4 before losing a 5-4 decision to Old Dominion He hopes that Tanner continues to use him as a starter, but explains that whatever he does, it's easier to prepare if you're used in the same role all season. Griffin recalled that he was on the disabled list in 1975 for most of the season, and eventually underwent surgery for a circulation problem. He was claimed from Houston on waivers by San Diego in the middle of the '76 season and spent a year and-a-half with the Padres before becoming a free agent. "I was signed by the (California) Angeles, but I really didn't pitch that much for them. That was another year that really had a lot of little, crazy things go wrong. It wasn't my arm or anything, but it seemed like everything else fell apart." Griffin explained that a spot was found on his lung during spring training, then he sprained an ankle on the last day of camp, and later in the season he suffered a respiratory virus. "It was sort of like a lost season," he recalled. The Giants signed him as a free agent in the spring of 1979 and he worked mostly in relief that season and in 1980. Griffin has had sort of a checkered career, one that still has not reached its potential. He takes all his problems philosoph ically. "The Lord has been good to me, I'm still playing," he rationalized. Griffin was asked about the adjustment for a player who has been traded often. "It's part of the game really," Griffin said. "It's tougher on the player's family than it is on the player really. "It just comes with the territory. You're playing baseball, and in many ways it's exciting. In many other ways it's tough. It's tough not so much to make the adjustment, but it does put some hardships on your personal life." Griffin is married and he and his wife, Lorri, have three children, Shannan, 10; Brett, 7, and year-old Kelly. The family resides in Ponway, Calif. "It's tough on me not having them here, but that's part of the game also," Griffin said. "It's something we have to accept." Griffin said trades don't affect a player's professional life too much because "baseball is the same game regardless of where you play it." .APARTMENTS': APARTMENT FOR RENT immedi ately; March/April Rent free. A crowd of 200 boisterous fans cheered the Bruins on to victory in a seesaw battle that climaxed with two un t answered goals in the final four minutes of the game. The Flyers dominated the first 10 mm utes of the game as they continually pressed Bruins goalie Steve Tyalila. The momentum changed, however, when Bruin defenseman Bob Thomas, who played an excellent game, gave team mate Jim Horrox a perfect pass to send him in on a breakaway for the first goal of the game. The first period, which was filled with exciting end to end action, ended with the Bruins leading 1.0. Early in the second period the Flyers Dave Schweon tied the game momentari ly with an unassisted goal. In less than minute, the Bruins took a 2-1 lead thanks to a goal scored by the league's regular season scoring champion Mike Strumphler. The second period ended with the Flyers' Dan Wormoyer netting a goal to tie the score. Satalin new Dukes coach PITTSBURGH (AP) Jim Satalin, ahead basketball coach at St. Bonaven ture University the past nine years, was named yesterday as new coach at Du quesne University. He fills the Duquesne post left vacant by the firing of Mike Rice early this month. The sudden, surprise announcement of Satalin's hiring was made by the Du quesne sports information department in telephone calls to the media. The 35-year old Satalin is expected to visit Pittsburgh tomorrow for a press conference. Last week, American University coach Gary Williams turned down the first Normal job offer made by Duquesne. Earlier, two other coaches withdrew their names from consideration before Duquesne could make an offer. They were Lou Campanelli of James Madison University and Jim Calhoun of North eastern. Satalin was not among the six candi dates interviewed initially by Du quesne's search committee. But he was officially named to the COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIED ADS :`, . WANTED (A.) GOLD! The Bruins bounced back and tied the game on Jim Horrox's second goal of the game. He was assisted by Steve Vinkler and Mike Strumphler. It seemed as if an overtime period was lurking in the future as both teams seemed to hold each other in check midway through the third period. But the Bruins spoiled all hopes of an overtime period as they scored two goals within 48 seconds of each other. The unassisted goal of the Flyers' Roger Hill brought them within one goal with 4:15 remaining. The Bruins spoiled all hopes of a Flyer comeback as they scored two insurance goals in the waning minutes of the game. At the termination of this brutal battle the Bruins mobbed their goalie Steve Tyahla to show him their appreciation of his gallant effort against the first-place Flyers. The championship game climaxed a 30-game schedule for the eight team intramural league. The first-place Fly ers were followed by the Kings, Rangers, and in fourth place the eventual league champion Bruins. The top 5 scorers were Mike Strumphl 'er with 64 points, Andy Mayers (48), Louis Hebert (45), Dave Schweon (44), and Mike Donne (42). Duquesne post by the university presi dent, the Rev.
