18—The Daily Collegian Friday, March 26, 1982 Lorenzo named coach of the year again By LEE DeORIO Collegian Sports Writer Whoever said lightning never strikes twice didn't have head wrestling coach Rich Lorenzo in mind. For the second consecutive year, Lorenzo has been named the Eastern Wrestling League coach of the year. Lorenzo earned the award by directing the Lions to a 12- 3 dual-meet record, including the last 11 in a row and the EWL championship. In the process of winning the league title, the Lions amassed a record 98 1 / 4 points, as all 10 wrestlers placed among the top four in their respective weight classes. Penn State went on to finish 14th at the national championships, with Scott Lynch and John Hanrahan earning All-America honors. "It's quite an honor to receive the award," Lorenzo said. "I realize it basically goes to the coach whose team does the best. It's really won by the team. It would be appropriate to cut it up into 40 pieces, with the biggest piece going to (assistant coach) John Fritz." It often happens that after a coach is honored with such an award, the team turns around the very next year and falls flat on its face. But Lorenzo is not your typical coach. The fact that this is the second time Lorenzo has been named Coach of the Year has not diminished the meaning of the award at all. "It's every bit as rewording," he said. "Whenever you're recognized, it's an honor. I was sort of surprised. I thought the team that finished higher in the nationals, which was Bloomsburg, would win the award. But I think our performance in the EWL tournament was the difference." Lorenzo has successfully turned around a Penn State program that was in serious trouble four years ago. The Lions have steadily progressed during Lorenzo's reign, improving from a 2-11 record in 1979 to a 12-3 mark in 1982. As is his custom, Lorenzo declines to take credit for the sudden revival. "It starts at the top, not with the coach, and the top is the administration," Lorenzo said. "(Assistant Athletic Director) Richie Lucas' foresight and support has been tremondous. John Fritz 'sets a fine example as coach, and John Sefter and Dave Becker, our grad assistants, have been very helpful." He led the Lions to a 12.3 record this year, including wins in their last 11 meets, and the Eastern Wrestling League championship. Lorenzo pointed out that what the program really boils down to is the work and dedication of the wrestlers themselves. It is from them that Lorenzo gains his true satisfaction, not from the awards. "The most valuable thing you can learn from sports is not from the trophies and the glory, but that it is going to be tough out there," Lorenzo said. "We're striving to get 100-percent effort and dedication and to get the young men to keep on plugging. "Looking back on the year, the most rewarding moment for me, as a coach, was the overall effort we • Crepes 4:30-9 4:30-10 A huge thanks to the 1981-82 Panhellenic Executive Council and Committee Chairpersons: Wendy Oakes, President Pam Santoro, V-President USA Knapp/Deb Goyke, Secretary Donna Dißenzo, Treasurer Dorina Provenzano, Public Relations Amy Costello, Rush Coordinator Nicki Will, Housing Chairperson Becky Saganowich, Philanthropic Chairperson Candace Rehnert, Social Chairperson Jodi Gentzler, Scholarship Chairperson Debbie Plontek, Rush Counselor Coordinator R-154 Who are the Quakers Officially they are a "Society of Friends" who gather together in a quiet form of worship. He not only teaches them about wrestling but about life in general. "I'm here as an educator, not just a wrestling coach," Lorenzo said. "Part of our goal is turning out quality young men. I'm here to help them reach their goals, whatever they may be. I get satisfaction out of seeing them achieve." As long as Rich Lorenzo is his coach, any Penn State wrestler is sure to be on the right road to success. Photo by Janie Burger more Final Fours: first and a last? By BRUCE DALLAS AP Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA (AP) Two women's basketball teams will be crowned national champions this weekend, the NCAA's first ever and probably the AIAW's last. The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women round of four begins at the Palestra here tonight with a doubleheader pitting Villano va, 28-3, against Rutgers, 23-7, in the first game and top-seeded Texas, 34-3, versus Weyland Baptist, 19-13, in the nightcap. The winners plqy tomorrow for the AIAW title. The NCAA women's final also be gins tonight in Norfolk, Va., with Cheyney State and Maryland in the opener and Tennessee against Loui siana Tech following. Only three of the nation's Top 20 women's teams No. 5 Texas, No. 8 Rutgers and No. 11 Villanova opted to enter the AIAW tournament this year. That was not unexpected, since the AIAW will probably become sports history this spring. The NCAA, which originally ig nored the rise in women's sports in the late 1960 s and early 19705, has become the dominant force in women's colle giate athletics. "There will be two No. l's," said Villanoya 6-4 senior Lis Ortlip, "but I'm glad we're in the AIAW. We want to win the last one." "I don't feel we lost any prestige being in the AIAW tournament," said NINO- C At SUITS BLAZERS CERRUTI SHIRTS MICHAEL'S CLOTHING CO. FRASER ST. 4. g entle MINI MALL cpc o 238-4050 Villanova women's athletic director Mary Anne Steenrod. "The fact that Texas, Rutgers and Villanova are in the Top 20, and have been all season, lends a great deal of credibility." Another reason, Steenrod said, is that "the AIAW was there to help women's programs when nobody else was. I felt we had to be loyal," she said, although she admitted, "I don't think CPR (cardiopulmonary resusci tation) could save it now." In the early 19705, coaches and administrators for women's sports in eastern colleges organized. Other col leges around the country followed suit. "Then we realized we needed a parent group, and the AIAW was formed," Steenrod said. • Tiny Immaculata College in subur ban Philadelphia, led by coach Kathy Rush, won the first three MAW na tional basketball championships. Del ta State, another fixture of the early tournaments, won three AIAW titles. Delta State lost this year in a quar terfinal game with Villanova. Rutgers defeated Minnesota 83-75 in another regional at East Brunswick, N.J. Weyland beat California 85-70 at Berkley, while Texas won its 31st in a row with 73-61 victory over Wisconsin in Austin. Sixteen teams were entered in the four regionals. Texas coach Jody Conradt expects their game with Weyland to be "more like an innersquad scrimmage." The two teams have played four times this season, with Texas winning all four. scoreboard NHL Wales Conference Patrick Division x•NY Islanders NY Rangers FLYERS PENGUINS Washington Adams Division 43 14 17 339 205 103 40 24 10 291 255 90 38 23 15 277 240 87 31 28 18 331 323 78 21 38 17 248 320 59 x•Montreal Boston Buffalo Quebec Hartford Campbell Conference Norris Division 33 21 20 318 285 32 29 13 303 307 28 38 11 314 341 29 39 7 291 330 20 39 18 285 354 18 45 12 254 336 Minnesota Winnipeg Chicago St. Louie Toronto Detroit Smythe Division x•Edmonton 44 17 14 389 281 102 Calgary 27 31 17 311 323 71 Vancouver 28 33 18 281 270 88 Los Angeles 23 36 15 291 332 81 Colorado 17 47 11 224 331 45 x•cllnched first place In &Mon.
