Paterno given Dodd Award By 808 DVORCHAK Associated Press Writer PITTSBURGH (AP) The Bobby Dodd Award is presented "in recogni tion of a higher and more noble aspect of college coaching." And Dodd can't think of a more deserving recipient than Penn State's Joe Paterno. "I have great respect for Penn State football because of Joe Paterno," Dodd said, who compiled a 165-64-8 record during his 22 years as head coach at Georgia Tech. "He cares about his football play ers, which is shown by the fact that he graduates almost 90 percent of them. I doubt if there's any other coach at a major program that can make that statement," Dodd added prior to the award presentation yesterday. A plaque accompanying the award honors the recipient for "a style that emphasizes something more than winning a game. . .a belief that the game of football should be kept in perspective with college life in gener al." It is presented annually by the American Sportsmanship Council, and Paterno accepted it at a luncheon in his honor at Three Rivers Stadium. AP Lasorphoto "The university has a commitment to football, but it's based on certain guidelines," Paterno said. "We wanted to do it with people who rep resent the university in a proper way." Paterno has spent half of his 32 years at Penn State as the head coach. In those 16 years, his teams have won 151 or 82 percent of its games and Have we got some the daily Collegian news for you made 14 bowl appearances. The Lions finished No. 3 in the country last year after beating Southern California in the Fiesta Bowl. "One of the things I reallly admire about Joe and Penn State is that they play with student-athletes. They play with people who have come to get an education and play football both," Dodd said. "That was my whole philosophy. We were going to graduate our foot ball players. We were going to have an influence on their lives," Dodd added. During an interview prior to the luncheon, Paterno said it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep college athletics in perspective because of the pressure to win at all costs. And Paterno cited the the situation at Texas A&M where former Pitt Coach Jackie Sherrill signed the rich est college football pact on record to become coach and athletic director. "You read about the shenanigans at Texas A&M and you wonder who's running the university," he said. "I don't think Sherrill was wrong in taking what they were willing to give him. Everybody's entitled to do that," Paterno added. "I'm not critical of Sherrill. I'm critical of the way the university handled it," he said. The recipient of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award is selected by a committee of former coaches and past recipients.
