'll Part of the Lions' problem yesterday was the field, said Bahr, who gave little, if any, thought to his career milestone that no one seemed aware of. The field looked smooth, but it was actually treacherous enough, he said, that the . Lions couldn't get the ball under control enough to put a few good passes together. It still came down to the basic question of why the Lions can't score. At least one player doesn't seem to know the answer. "I don't really think you can say that there's one problem," said forward Doug Moyer, Gerry's brother. "We've been getting a lot of good shots. Today we made a lot of shots near the goal, but we Goal by booters' By JEFF SCHULER . Daily Collegian Sports Writer BETHLEHEM Gerry Moyer has probably scored goals that have meant more. He probably has scored goals that have looked nicer. And he is probably destined to score many more goals in his career as a member of the men's soccer team. • But yesterday, Penn State coach Walt Bahr was probably just happy anybody on Penn State scored at Lehigh's Saucon Valley Fields. And it was Moyer's goal at 2:58 of the second overtime that gave the Lions a big 1-0 win over Lehigh and possibly kept Penn State's post-season hopes alive. "That certainly wasn't a very pretty goal that went in," Bahr said. "But hey, at that point we would have taken any goal at all, whether they would have put it in with their feet, their head, their elbows or whatever. We would have taken any type goal that went into the net at all." For 102 minutes the two teams re mained scoreless, mostly through the efforts of Lehigh goalkeeper Brian Blas er, teammate and defender Steve Schwartz, and the goalposts. The Lions took an amazing 44 shots at Blaser, turning the Lehigh keeper every which way but loose in the process, but none found the back of the net. • Until the 103rd minute. • The play started with Pete Jobling breaking in on the left side, shadowed closely by a Lehigh defender. "I was trying to shake the defender loose, that was all," Jobling said. "1 tried Sixers cruise past Bullets LANDOVER, Md. (AP) Julius Erv ing and Bobby Jones combined for 25 first half points as the Philadelphia 76ers opened up a 20-point lead and raced to a 112-99 NBA victory over the Washington Bullets last night. Erving, the high scorer in each of the first three games for unbeaten Philadel phia, finished with 19 points. Jones, in his new role as a starter, scored 15. The 76ers scored 15 fast-break points while opening up a 58-38 halftime lead. During one stretch, they outscored the just couldn't put them in. I really dori't know what , the single problem is." The coach doesn't know much more, either., "I wish I knew," Bahr said. "Your guess would be as good as mine. I know it's a contagious thing. When you have opportunities and you don't make them, maybe you start trying a little bit harder, or trying to hit the ball a little bit harder. or you become a little more impatient, I don't know. "(But) it's a soccer problem. You can dominate games, you can have 100 shots. . .it's difficult to score goals." Moyer buoys playoff. hopes faking him out a couple times and I finally got an open cross. I spotted him (Moyer) inside the corner of the post." Waiting at the other end was Moyer, who did exactly as Bahr had instructed him to do. "Anytime we have a guy coming in the coach has it that at least one person goes to the far post," said Moyer, a freshman from Fleetwood. • "I made the run on my defender it was really a poor defensive play, he went right to the ball so I was all alone. It was just a matter of whether (Jobling) could get it over." Jobling played his part, crossing per fectly to Moyer. And the kid who led his Berks County. high school team to the Pennsylvania state championship last year tipped the ball past Blaser for the biggest goal of his young Penn State career. • It is fitting that Moyer scored the winning goal, since he, his brother Doug, and two Lehigh players all teammates at Fleetwood were the subjects of a story about the game by the local Berks County newspaper, the Reading Eagle. But Gerry, who is fighting off the effects of an ankle injury, said he just happened to be at the right place at the right time. "It feels real good to get a big goal like that," he said. "But it was just one of those things where I happened to be the person who was there. "I think personally it was a real good goal for me. It's not like we were in the finals or something like that it's not that kind of goal. But without it we might not get a chance to get to the finals." Bullets 13-1 with Jones contributing sev en of the points. Washington, which has lost its Brit two games, was led by Don Collins with 17 points. Kevin Grevey had 16, seven of them coming during a brief spurt at the start of the third quarter when the Bul lets cut their deficit to 62-50. It was the third consecutive season that the Bullets have opened at home against Philadelphia, and each game resulted in a Washington defeat. "Well," Bahr said, "maybe it is a little bit more so because we certainly have had lots of opportu nities, and we've had a dozen , games like this where we start the first 15, 20 minutes and should have a couple of goals, and we don't have them." Penn State could have had a couple of goals every 15 or 20 minutes. But the Lions were flat. Many of the shots they took weren't good ones, and several times they didn't have as much patience as they should have. ' Fingers won six games and saved 28 others with a 1.04 earned run average in 47 appearances for the Brewers, second half winners of the American League's East Division. Fingers beat Oakland right-hander Steve McCatty, receiving 22 of the 28 first place ballots from the BBWAA commit tee composed of two writers from each of the league's 14 franchise cities. He fin ished with 126 points and was the only pitcher named on every ballot. McCatty had the other six first place votes and finished with 84 1 / 2 points, well ahead of Jack Morris of Detroit, who was third with 21. Fingers, 35, had a hand in 34 of the Brewers' 62 victories last season and became only the second relief pitcher to win the AL Cy Young award, following Sparky Lyle of the New York Yankees, who captured it in 1977. Acquired from St. Louis just two days after the• Cardinals had obtained him from San Diego during the winter meet ings at Dallas last December, Fingers pitched 78 innings for the Brewers, strik . A rangy right-hander with a waxed handlebar mustache, Fingers has started only four games in his major league career and none since 1971. He broke in with the Oakland A's in 1969 and was a key member of three world championship teams with that club, named the most valuable player in the 1974 World Series when he won one game and saved two others with a• 1.93 ERA against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He holds career World Series records for relief appearances with 16 and career saves with six. Both marks were set during Oakland's reign in the early 70s. In his first two years with the Padres, he set National League records with 35 saves in 1977 and 37 saves the next season. For his career, Fingers has 272 saves, another bullpen record. Fingers was en route to Las Vegas for a vacation and was not immediately available for comment on the award. Behind Fingers, McCatty and Morris in the balloting came Milwaukee's Pete Vuckovich, fourth with 8 1 / 2 points, fol lowed by Baltimore's Dennis Martinez with 3 1 / 2 . Then came New York Yankee teammates Goose Gossage with three points and Ron Guidry with 2 1 / 2 , followed by Britt Burns of Chicago with two and Larry Gura of Kansas City with one point.
