23--The Daily Collegian Friday, Oct. 30, 1981 the dai/Y n collegia Miller and da Camera mix well old and new ity EUGENE BURKE Daily Collegian'Staff Writer : The accomplishments of Musica da Camera on Wednesday night in the Music Building Recital Hall deserve praise. Under the direction of D. Douglas Miller, da Camera combined the old with the new in repertoire, performing works by Friedrich Handel, Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and Johann Sebastian Bach. • It was refreshing to see a wide range of Castes expressed in such a collection of t,ecognized, accomplished faculty musi cians, and equally worthy students who are striving for their own recognition. • Miller said he encourages "dialogue about pieces" and "immediate input and lelf-expression." Miller also said "our lob is to create an atmosphere for striv ing for excellence . . . and of personal discipline." Wednesday night da Camera took strides toward that goal. The ensemble first performed Hand el's "Concerto Grosso Opus 6, No. 9 in F- Major." This concerto is part of a 12- 4oncerto set written in one month in 1739. The performance was strong and vi brant. With six movements, the compos er had a lot to say, and da Camera spoke well for him. One particularly satisfying element Was the internal dialogue in the fourth movement. The conversation originated With the first and second violins and was 4arried to the 'cellos. This movement was the most tightly performed of the Work. The audience responded to this Meredith opens reality with a world of poetry Sigma Pi Proudly Presents Its First Annual HALLOWEENS/IT BASH Saturday, Oct. 31 9:00 p.m, of zn" Fraternity Cosh Prizes for Best Costumes Sinister Sigma Pi Punch Emcee: Bat Szoforo Special Appearance by the Maurice Bayard Band Everyone Welcome Donations of the Dool performance of Handel with apprecia tion, if not enthusiasm. Da Camera-then moved into the 20th century with a work by Charles Ives. "The Unanswered Question" was a the atrically and musically effective exer cise in philosophy. Using a trumpet, flute and strings the ensemble led the audi ence to consider what Ives had to say with this thought-provoking work. Director Miller read excerpts from the forward to the work's score. The strings playeil incessantly droning chords from the rear of the stage which symbolized the " . . . Druids who know, see and hear nothing." The lone trumpet, placed in the sound control booth at the rear of the Recital Hall, asked the haunting "Ques tion;" the flutes were the "Fighting Answerers," representing humanity. The flutes spoke well from below the right apron of the stage. The piece never attempts to answer the "Perennial Ques tion of Existence," but lets the listener reflect in the "Undisturbed Solitude" at the end of the work. After the audience showed its appre ciation for Ives' Work with resounding applause, da Camera offered the original 13-piece version of "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland. Da Camera closed with Bach's "Bran denburg Concerto No. 1 in F-Major." This piece, written 20 years before Hand el's "Concerti Grossi," is rich in its orchestration and was superbly per formed. This is the opening of one of William Meredith's poems, and it ' was also the introduction that John Balaban, professor of English, made at Meredith's poetry reading Wednesday night in the HUB Gallery Lounge. Meredith is the author of seven books of poetry and has been a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets since 1964. From 1978 to 1980 ,he was a poetry consultant to the Library of Congress. Impressive accomplishments for an equally impressive person. - Meredith enlightened his audience with tidbits of interesting facts and amusing stories. Each anecdote HI WAY PI Tonight . . . Fans of Sanders' "First" and "Sec ond Deadly Sin" books will be happy to be working once again with ex-Chief of Police Edward X. Delaney, a great chunk of a man who's part bear, part bloodhound and who is known in the NYPD as "Iron Balls." The moment Delaney gets one whiff of the mys terious murders, noting the criminal's care in leaving no traces or clues, he licks his lips in anticipation of the thrill of the chase, and we're off and running by his side through this satisfying detective story. What really sets apart the "Deadly Sin" novels _from the gamut of other like series is Sanders' handling of his people. I say people as opposed to ilege and others must pay for their seats at the play with a ransom of cholers, infections and nightmares?" A common theme throughout Cheev er's work is separation by death or divorce. The death of something, whether it be a principle, a child or feelings for someone, runs all through the book. Stories of divorce are chroni cled from husband, wife or child's point of view. The best story, "Metamorphoses," consists of four parts, each a complete story in itself. The first is aboilt a businessman who opens the office door of his boss and finds his boss in a compromising situa tion; he then feels "surrounded by trouble, misfortune and disaster." al , was the germ to a poem that he either read or recited from memory. His opening poem, "Two Masks. Unearthed in Bulgar ia," was two stanzas that describe the masks in terms of "the old clay which is their wrinkled skin." That line, among otherg,.created a very effective image. Meredith discussed his first book, "Love Letter from an Impossible Land," which was chosen by Archibald MacLeish in 1944 for the Yale Series of Young Poets. He said that some of the poems in the book were written while he was in college, in "the shadow of Pound and Eliot." Meredith ddfined his college days as the "era of obscure poetry," which he tried to escape. In a side comment, Meredith said that today the poets are clear it's the Secretaries of State who are unclear. The comic side of Meredith surfaced several other times in the hour long reading. Introducing his poem about Hazard, the painter, Meredith confided that he characters quite intentionally. Edward X. Delaney is not young, virile and sought after by 007-ish wom en; his wife is not glamorous and gamine; they make a comfortable above-middle-aged couple who live in a comfortable above-middle-aged brownstone in Manhattan. I'd. like to visit them some day, have a beer or a -few Glenlivets on the rocks, discuss the latest traffic tie-ups downtown or the best place to .buy croissants. Any one could know the killer, Zoe Kohler. She is a mouse by day, a lioness by night. Once a month she sharpens her wardrobe, her wits and her Swiss army knife, and prowls mid town conventions in search of a victim on which to vent her inexplicable pains and torments caused by menstruation. Zoe's' slightly disjointed past may cause some headscratching among the more strict students of psychology, but This event brings out the darker side of him, and on the way home from work he is mistaken for a delivery man and a waiter. When he finally gets home his dogs are loose in the yard and they attack him. The second part is about a man deeply in love with a woman who has an invalid father. The two marry but never tell the father, who lives out in the country. The wife visits the father every summer and the husband misses her so much he goes to the country house and takes his wife for a drive. He is so btisy looking at her while he drives that he has an accident and she is killed. The third part has two characters, a homely daughter and a domineering BUILD UP YOUR CASH By donating plasma at Sera Tec Biologicals, you can earn $2O or more per week. As in "The First Deadly Sin," Sand ers bounces us back and forth between Criminal and Law; nothing is a sur prise ( no, the butler did not do it) except that the murderer is, this time, female. To follow the police procedures in tracking down the killer is more than just interesting to the layman, and Sanders seems . to delight in every intricacy of the chase. Indeed, it's as if the author himself doesn't know which strings he must pull to enable Delaney to right what is wrong. And so off we go with Delaney and Sanders on another trek through the outer edges and inner convolutions of a murderer's mind. You'll be satisfied to know that the team is triumphant: Delaney gets his man . . . er, I mean woman. mother. The mother eliminates - any fun the girl ever has. • The last part concerns a man who wants to quit smoking. Once he quits he becomes obsessed with what other people smoke. "He saw them as Winstons, Chester fields, Marlboros, Salems, hookahs, meerschaums, cigarillos, Corona-Co ronas, Camels and Players." He attacks a little girl whom he mistakes for a Lucky Strike and the police drag him away. These stories all have a sinister, darker side that is appealing. They are real and alive, a "ransom of cholers, infections and nightmares," in a col lection of ordinary, forgotten stories. thought the poem was "hilarious." It was definitely funny because of the treatment of the subject matter the loud and nonsensical rock music that comes out of "thick black hooting discs." What was probably Meredith's most poignant piece was, "Dreams of Suicide, In Sorrowful Memory of John Barryman, Ernest Hemingway, and Sylvia Plath." He introduced the poem with a lengthy discussion of suicide: some say it's done by people who take life more seriously than you or I. He knew John Barryman personally and told the audience that his suicide was a direct result of his father's suicide. Meredith said he does not understand or approve of suicide, and his poem is a sort of moral statement about it. Meredith provided 'his audience with some laughs and some insight into the physical world and the people in it. Here was a poetry reading with real worth.
