"The focus is public relations, not teaching," Kramer said. About 25 people will be performing CPR from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow. The participants are CPR instructors for Health Education . 303, nurses from Ritenour and paiamedic.s, Kramer The participants will perform CPR for half an hour straight with fifteen minute breaks. Heinold said the marathon will help promote CPR, but he doesn't expect miracles. "I don't have my head up in the clouds. I think that it will help to at least let people know there are places to go (to get certification), and it is a good promotion for the class (Health Ed. 303)," he said. The films being shown are "CPR: To Save A Life" and "Choking: To Save A Life." The slide show "What is CPR?" was put together especially for the marathon: Bill Hughes, helped to synchronize the sound .to the slides, The video cassette, "Cindy," is the true story of a girl who was saved because the people near her knew CPR. The story is especially moving because the girl who was saved plays herself in the film, Heinold said. Heinold said a person can be kept alive for an hour. But if the rescuer can't do CPR that long, the victim will die. , ' • "People don't realize the physical work. CPR, takes," said Bonnie Young (sth-nursing) a participant in the marathon. Another participant, Marcie. Stake (sth-recreation) and parks) agreed, "The smaller you are the harder it Stake's is also a lab instructor for Health Ed. 303. Call Deputy Bob at 238.9635 Safety of fad diets discussed By JOSEPH KAYS Daily Collegian Staff Writer Atkins, Scarsdale and Beverly Hills are just a few of the many fad diets now on the market. How these diets work, and • how safe they are was the subject of one of the many discussions taking place at Health Expo 'Bl yesterday in the HUB. • • Deborah Holderness (graduate nutrition), who works with the Penn State Nutrition Education Program, said a person could easily be on a different fad diet every week of the year. The popularity of some fad diets is illustrated by the fact that the Bev 'erly Hills Diet holds' the top spot on the non-fiction best-seller lists of both the New York Times book re view and the Time magazine book review. Holderness does . not agree with many of , the methods these diets use for fast weight loss. They are just quick, easy solutions without long term results, she said, and much of the initial weight loss is water which is regained in a very short amount of time. Holderness said there are five basic kinds of diets: WILL PAY $35 for 2 tickets (general admission) to Boston College. Tom 237-0595 4 GOOD GENERAL Admission tick ets to Notre Dame game Nov. 21. Call 238.8285 The Daily Collegian . Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1981-7 dilation . and curettage method, which Ross said is considered the safest abortion method. This meth od involves dilating the cervix, and vacuuming out the tissue lining its walls. The procedure takes about eight to 12 minutes and is usually accompanied by cramps. After about 20 minutes the patient is taken to a recovery room designed to help her patient relax. There she is monitored by nurses and the doctor and dismissed after 30 to 45 minutes. The entire procedure from the time the patient arrives until she leaves takes about four hours. The patient is informed of post-operative care and given a number which she can call 24 hours a day with any questions. She also receives a laboratory examination report to be filled out at the end of two weeks by any doctor. The Merest Clinic, which opened in 1976, is the closest of 15 such clinics in this state. It practices confidentiality to all its patients and has a staff of certified counselors. • Formula or one-food diets. • High protein, high fat and low carbohydrate diets. • Gimmick diets. *Diet pills. *Basically sound diets. Of the one-food diet, Holderness said, "No one food is complete nutri tionally, so you're asking for trouble with thcise." She added that after a while a person gets so bored with the only food he is allowed to eat that he doesn't even bother to eat it, and he cuts his caloric intake even more which isn't healthy. Low carbohydrate diets, like the Scarsdale and Atkins' diets, can cause a number of complications, Holderness said. When the body doesn't receive , enough carbohydrates a chemical imbalance, known as ketosis, oc curs. This can lead to fatigue, nau sea, constipation, gout and even damage to a fetus if a woman uses them during pregnancy. Instead of tryind to lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time, Holderness said you should try to stay on a good long-term reducing diet which is much more beneficial and safer.
