10—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Sept. 10, 1981 CFA, TV fray is delayed By DOUG TUCKER AP Sports Writer KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Just as the NCAA was driving for the winning touchdown, the College Football Asso ciation pulled a truly nifty trick. The CFA moved back the goal line and took possession. 'Now the CFA is driving. Who finally will emerge victorious in this struggle for control of football television has become tougher than ever to predict. But a few things seem logical. The CFA, figure most observers, admitted weakness yesterday by mov ing the deadline for final declaration on its separate television pact from Sept.lo to Sept.lB. The 61 CFA schools had been told since July they would have three weeks, or until Sept.lo, to change the ballot they cast at their Aug.2l. The vote to adopt the CFA television plan Dolphins host Pittsburgh tonight By FRED GOODALL AP Sports Writer MIAMI (AP) The Pittsburgh Steel ers and Miami Dolphins were the most dominant teams in the National Football League during the 19705, winning six of the decade's 10 Super Bowls. • But their storied histories although still very much a part of the mystique df both clubs will be in the background tonight when the American Conference rivals, both struggling to recapture the magic of the past, collide in a nationally televised matchup before more than 65,- 000 people at the Orange Bowl. The 8:30 p.m. game could be billed as a battle between experience —the Steelers retain 15 veterans who have played in four Super Bowls and 18 others who have appeared in at least one and inexperi ence, as the Dolphins have just more than 24 years of age and retain only two players from their last Super. Bowl ap pearance, in 1974. The Steelers, though, looked unsea soned in their 1981 opener Sunday, fum bling eight times, losing five, while quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw two intetceptions in a 37-33 loss to Kansas City. Miami, meanwhile, rolled past St. Louis 20-7 as second-year quarterback David Woodley tossed a pair of touch down passes and the young Dolphin de fense yielded only 61 yards on the ground. "You just can't make as many mistak es as we did and expect to win .in this league," said Bradshaw, whose fourth- MAKE $ll,OOO FOR COLLEGE WHILE YOU'RE GOING TO COLLEGE.. Penn State was one of those voting "yes." Then, from all appearances, CFA support began eroding. Last week, the Big Eight, Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences said they were with holding final decision on adopting the NCAA or the CFA package to give the NCAA a chance to call a special con vention to reorganize its top football division. analysis The SEC, perhaps the most pivotal conference involved, reportedly took a private vote that was 9-1 in favor of the NCAA, with only Georgia, whose presi dent is also president of the CFA, quarter fumble was scooped up by Kan sas City linebacker Thomas Howard and returned 65 yards for the winning touch down with 1:59 remaining. Steelers coach Chuck Noll, entering his 13th season with a .643 winning percent age, simply called the defeat a "team effort." "If we keep making the same kind of mistakes, it's going to be a long, long year," said Noll. "But I am not consid ering any personnel changes." The Steelers will face Woodley with Ex-Steeler Bahr back REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) The San Francisco 49ers have signed place kicker Matt Bahr, and the former Pitts burgh Steeler is expected to handle the kicking in Sunday's home opener against the Chicago Bears. Bahr, one of three free agents signed Tuesday by the National Football League team, will fill in for Ray Wersching, who pulled a hip muscle in warmups before last Sunday's season-opening game at Detroit. 'Wersching, most accurate field goal kicker in the NFL the last two seasons," was replaced as the kickoff man during the game but handled the field goals, making one of his two attempts. Tuesday afternoon the NCAA, as many expected, called the special con vention for the week of Dec. 6. But at the same time three of the CFA's most prestigious and militant schools filed class-action suits against the NCAA. The University of Texas got a tempo rary restraining order from a state court in Austin prohibitng the NCAA from initiating or threatening sanc tions against . CFA schools going with the NBC deal. In federal court in Oklahoma, the universities of Oklahoma and Georgia filed a similar action on the property rights issue, insisting the schools themselves, not the NCAA, own the property right to telecasts of their own football team. And then yesterday, the announce ment came that the CFA board of directors had changed the final decla ration date to Sept. 18. third-year pro Dwayne Woodruff at left cornerback, in placed of the injured Ron Johnson. Woodley, who became the Dolphins No.! quarterback last season after Bob Griese was injured, completed 14 of 28 passes for 178 yards against the Cardi nals, but was sacked four times for 37 yards in losses. Miami coach Don Shula, six victories shy of'becoming the fourth coach in NFL history to win 200 games, said his club will be looking to establish consistency in before the season began, was signed after a tryout session before coach Bill Walsh and his staff. Bahr, the brother of Oakland Raiders kicker Chris. Bahr, made 19 of 28 field goal attempts for Pittsburgh last year. Also signed were wide receiver Mike Shumann, who was with the team in 1978 and 1979, and offensive tackle Allan Ken nedy, a 268-pounder from Washington State who was a 10th round draft choice of the Washington Redskins this year. The 49ers were expected to announce today the squad moves necessary to make room on the 45-man roster for the three newcomers. If Wersching is placed on injured reserve, he will be unavailable for at least four games. '1 Although the CFA says no, the switch raises the question of whether the date was changed because the CFA thought it was about to lose. NBC has to have virtually all the top CFA schools to make its four-year contract worth the $lBO million the network is paying for it. If the CFA can't deliver; there are escape clauses for NBC to exercise. The NCAA's main line of defense has been the threat 'of sanctions against CFA schools that insist on going with the NBC plan. Now that's tied up in a legal hassle. It could remain tied up on appeals for a few yeais. In the meantime, the tight inner circle of militant CFA schools can argue with their moderate brethern to come on board because the NCAA can't do a thing until the legal issue is resolved. And that could be years from now its ground attack, which amassed 144 yards Sunday. : The Steelers, who have not lost the first two games of any season since 1970, have never beaten the Dolphins in Miami, although the club did win two of its Super Bowl titles in the Orange Bowl. The last Miami victory over Pittsburgh came in 1973. The Steelers have won all three meetings since, including a 23-10 decision last season, to even the series at three games apiece. in NFL with 49ers you're going to take excruciating science courses, you'll need all the help you can get.
