FRASER- - 238-8005 By CAROLE TROTTERE Daily Collegian Staff Writer Trying to meet the changing needs of students and industry, the University has made additions to its 32 associate degree programs. . A physical therapy assistant program, the newest addition, began this summer at the Hazleton Campus. The program, sponsored by the health department of the College of Health, Physical Education and Recre ation, is a seven -term, 67-credit program. It includes 33 general education requirements and 34 credits required for the major, according to a news release by the University's Office of Public Information. Robert E. Dunham, vice president for undergraduate studies, said there seems to be a need for physical therapy assistants across the state. "Jobs are and will be available," he said. Dunham said at first the University anticipates an enrollment of about 12 to 15 students. a ygar at the Hazleton campus. The course of study includes basic science and non science subjects with a 10-credit practicum required during the seventh term of the program. The program directors are still arranging a practi cum with Hazleton State General Hospital. The physical therapy program at the University is the second program offered in the state, Dunham said. The other is offered at Lehigh County Community College and has an enrollment of about 50 students, with 35 to 40 graduates each year. David Moyer, director of admissions at Lehigh Coun ty Community College, said that college's program is not affiliated with a hospital, although last semester students worked at an internship with state hospitals, specialized institutions and nursing homes. Another change in associate degree programs is the upgrading of the University's associate degree in agri cultural business to include three options, said Neil B. Arena Theatres & Casino 1600 N. The options general, animal production and crop production are an answer to the change in student clientele, Gingrich said. Many students come from family farms to learn new agricultural technologies and then return home, Gin grich said. "The two options (animal and crop production) can satisfy this mainstream of concern," he said. The general option resembles the previdus program and graduates can enter into industries and services that support agriculture, Gingrich said. . The first year of the two-year agricultural business degree is offered at all Commonwealth campuses with the second year taken at the University Park campus. Another major change is the replacement of all 800- level courses with corresponding baccalaureate courses. This will enable students who wish to continue school ing for a four-year degree to transfer almost all of their credits, Gingrich said. About 15 percent of all graduates in the associate degree programs will seek four-year degrees, but previously lost credits when they switched into a bacca laureate program, Ginrich said. Ernest R. Weidhass, assistant dean for Common wealth campuses and professor of engineering graph ics, said in the past two years, three new programs in engineering fields have been instituted to meet chang ing needs: railway, solar heating and cooling, and telecommunications technologies. Railway technology, started two years ago at the Mont Alto and Wilkes-Barre campuses, has suffered from low enrollment, Weidhaas said. He said recent problems with funding for passenger railways may be a deterrent. Weidhaas said he thought the program had the factors of success because of the job market's need for grad uates. The railway program is really an option of surveying technology and includes courses in right of way and drainage problems, track lay and maintenance, and , basic railway structures, he'said. The solar heating and cooling program is the only one of its kind in the state and will be reviewed for accredi tation sometime this year, Weidhias said. Colorado Technical College has the only accredited two-year program in the country, he said. When the program was in the planning stages five years ago, the department was very cautious about starting it. "We wanted to be sure the people would have jobs," Weidhaas said. The program includes classes in active and passive design and conservation of energy, which gives the instruction an interdisciplinary nature enabling grad uates to work in other areas such as oil and heat and still be employable, Weidhaas said. In 1981, 27 degrees were granted in the program with many students getting jobs as energy auditors, Weid haas said. , The telecommunications program trains people for technological positions in this rapidly growing industry, which includes work with satellites, cable TV, tele phones and radio. Because many of the smaller telephone companies get involved in these new areas, they are hiring techni cally trained people, Weidhaas said. d/L <c.'t ....--...:...., .........4,-.... * .1.v,0...'••• \ •,...-.4 : ,, : ...,, & 44,,,, A ,,, 'S,4':'C<r''f°/r'"'ts*4tV' Monday Evening 12:00 (1) FANTASY ISLAND A man who wants to become a millionaire, no matter what the sacrifice and a woman seeking the truth regarding her twin brother's death is led into a macabre, terrifying adventure.
