Spokesman Ben Welles said in a briefing that "this is not a dramatic increase in the number of Soviet ships in the Baltic" but he said that there has been a "significant increase in amphibious lift." NATO nations have been monitoring what is expected to be an amphibious landing exercise on the Soviet coast. Once again, as he did earlier in the week, Welles said the . prevailing view in the Defense Department is that the exercise is not related to the tension over political conditions in Poland. Room 7 Carnegie Tuesday-Friday 9 a. in. - 3 p.lll. 865-2533 German politician says sentiment growing By CHARLES M. TOCCI Daily Collegian Staff Writer A growing minority of leftist pacifists are fueling anti-American and anti- NATO sentiment in Western Europe by actively demonstrating against the NATO arms build-up, although Soviet military might is greater in Western Europe, a West German Parliament member Peter Kurt Wurzbach said last night. . Wurzbach, a member of the conserva tive opposition Christian Democratic Union Party in the Bundestag, said the Reagan administration must work close ly with all 15 of the NATO countries in confronting any Soviet aggression. "Our position is that from the first. moment of any Soviet attack the Russians must know that if the United States is involved, that they are taking on the whole NATO," Wurzbach said. He described the pacifists as only a fraction of the West Germans, but a very aggressive minority with an unrealistic attitude on the arms situation in Western Europe. Wurzbach said the Soviets have eight times more nuclear medium-range weapons than NATO and still will have 2.5 times more after the NATO modern ization plan is completed. "Sixty-thousand pacifists take part in demonstrations, not against Russian ,modernization buid-up, but against NATO plans for modernization in 1983 and 1984," Wurzbach said. He said the pacifists are accusing the Americans of fueling the arms race, even as the Soviets are developing 5520,21,22 and backfire bombers able to reach any point in Western Europe with these weapons. Wurzbach added that a silent majority in West Germany accepts the need for a "credible defense capability." He said a recent poll showed that 75 percent of West Germans thought that way. "Only a fraction of people believe these anti-American sentiments, but the paci fists are causing an uneasiness within the silent majority. This feeling of insecurity is what is so dangerous about this pacifist upsurge," Wurzbach said. anti-American Wurzbach said the silent majority of West Germans must be mobilized and stimulated in its comittment to NATO and its peace policies. He said an aggres sive information campaign must be used to meet the Soviet propaganda cam paign. He said pacifist ideals are beginning to filter into unions and into Protestant and Roman Catholic churches where "they are praying more against NATO arma ment, than in God." Wurzbach added that 18 to 19 percent of the Western European media is speaking against the NATO stance. He said his Christian Democratic Par ty supports the 1979 NATO deployment decision with a genuine disarmament ; between Americans and Soviets rather than arms ceilings. However, he said NATO must be able to defend itself against Eastern aggression. "Defense is an unpopular, but impor tant subject. Defense is very expensive, but freedom is . priceless. Our party is working to spend the necessary money to meet this growing threat from the East ern part of the world," Wurzbach said. "I would enjoy decreasing the military budget percentage use, but we must be realistic with the situation." He said about 50 Soviet aides are sur roundingu Poland right now and able to attack within 10 hours. He said the Sovi ets have easy access to the West, but NATO reserves must come from the United States. A similar Eastern area in Europe has over 30,000 more convert tanks than its Western counterpart, he added. Wurzbach said he hopes President Reagan will wake up the West German government to do what is right for all of the Western European countries. "The Warsaw Pact countries must know that it is an incalculable risk to ; strike against even the smallest NATO country," Wurzbach said. Wurzbach has been visiting the Univer sity for the past few days and has been speaking to various political science classes.
