"And MAKE SURE you give a supporting leg on the turns." Unfamiliar terminology to most, but those words nag at the ears of the Penn State Equestrian Team. Equitation (horsemanship) began ' nationally as an intercollegiate sport in 1967. The collegiate rider is judged on his or her ability to direct a strange horse through specified maneuvers and is classified according to his or her skill. The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association allows riders over 18 a rare opportunity to compete at an Equine horse show. (Any horse shows for riders over 18 years old, including the Olympic and international competitions, are judged on the ability of the horse.) "It takes constant, intense practice to compete," said Jane Flynn, the team's coach and adviser. Because of individual time restrictions, the majority of the 35 team members, including only one male, get a chance to ride only once or twice a week, she said. Five to seven team members own horses and board them at Eastwood Farms, on Buffalo Run Road in Bellefonte, where the team practices. "Some of us ride three to five times a week," team member Kathy Johnston (12th-chemical engineering) said . ' In 1977; there were 18 to 20 team members, compared to 35 now, and Johnston attributes the growing number to, increasing interest and greater publicity. Johnston came to Ppnn State because of Flynn and the facilities at Eastwood Farms. Jane and her husband, David, own Eastwood Farms, which houses 32 horses: 15 of which are boarders that the Flynns take care of. "The farm is a full time job," Jane said. "Boarders, lessons, sales and shows pay for upkeep." Because of large student interest, Penn State has considered experimenting with a riding option in Phys Ed 005 at the Flynn's farm, but the cost of transportation is prohibitive, she said. "Expensive equipment is needed to Division of Tn•K Ent ride well," Jane said. A good pair of custom fitted boots can cost $4OO, a custom coat, $2OO. But Jane sees the costs as an investment: "A Well made pair of boots lasts for years of hard use," she said. Of the 140 colleges in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, about one-third have Equine studies programs and many supply riders with the best equipment, Jane said. "They get to ride every day, this mak% the competition rough." But the Penn State students hold their own. Margaret Solhaug (Bth-health planning and administration) took a first place at the regional show and a fourth at nationals in the novice equitation over fences class, and Tammy Clark (3rd agriculture) took a first at regionals in novice equitation on the flat. The team members make the best of things. As Johnston puts it, "I wouldn't be happy if I couldn't ride, I'd just mope around."
