14—The Daily Collegian Thursday, April 23,1981 By JENNY CLOUSE Daily Collegian Staff Writer Many people associate springtime at Stone Valley with the Sy Barash Regat ta, picnics and softball games. Most people do not realize that there is anoth er facet to Stone Valley. That facet the Shaver’s Creek Nature Center is a recreation area. The center will feature many events this spring, including programs held in State College, Theresa Mueller, an em ployee of the center, said. As part of an effort to reacquaint people with nature, these programs are designed to encourage everyone to go out to the center, participate in the various activities and explore nature, she said. Unless otherwise indicated, programs and workshops are open to the public free of charge, Mueller said. Some of the events to be held this spring include: • An early morning birdwalk fol lowed by a homemade breakfast from 7 to 9:30 on May 3. The fee for breakfast is $2.50. Preregistration is required. Elevator maintenance uplifting work By CINDY COX Daily Collegian Staff Writer When people ask Don Rote how things are going, he usually replies “up and down.” When things start to go side ways, Rote said he gets concerned. Elevator maintenance and repair are Rote’s responsibilities for the University Office of Maintenance and Operations. His job involves supervising the inspec tion and care of the 233 elevators on campus. The fastest elevators in Centre County Les Walters, University elevator repairman, and Steve Byron, elevator apprentice, overlook equipment above and check the relay panels of an elevator in Althouse Lab at the right. About half of the calls to the maintenance office result from van dalism. “It hasn’t been as much of a problem in recent years,” Walters said. “There’s seems to be a better breed of student here nowadays.” One problem repairmen do not see very often is stalled elevators, Rote said. During an average week, he said main tenance receives one call about a stuck elevator. Elevator accidents are very rare, said George Schimmel, assistant director for physical plant maintenance. “Elevator travel is one of the safest means of travel , around,” Schimmel said. “It’s super-safe because it’s well regulated.” All elevators are inspected annually or bi-annually by the state and insurance inspectors, Schimmel said. When smoke and fire detectors sense a fire, elevators with fire control are sent to a pre-specified “home” floor. Other regulations require institutions receiving federal funds to have pro grams that are accessible to hand icapped people, said Charles Brueggebors, manager of project analy sis and estimation for the Office of Physical Plant. Regulations do not specifically require elevators, so the University often meets requirements by scheduling programs in buildings that are accessible to hand icapped people, he said. The University is presently working on a project to install inclines to make the first floor of Sparks Building accessible to handicapped people, Brueggebors said. A chairlift is also being installed by 10 Sparks for wheelchairs, he added. DAN BRODY’S KODACOLOR Prices are: $3.53-12 shots, $6.07-24 shots, $B.ll-36 shots. Pick up 10% discount card.
