10—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, April 14, 1981 Phils' Carlton downs Bucs =By RALPH BERNSTEIN :4P Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Phila delphia Phillies received their gold World Series rings before last night's home opener against the Pittsburgh Pi rates and then went out and gave a gilt edged perforthance. The Phillies, behind Steve Carlton, lashed 11 hits as they beat the Pirates 5-1 before a crowd of 60,404. It was the first victory of the season for Carlton, the 1980 National League Cy Youhg Award win ner. Carlton gave up nine hits, struck out five and walked one. He was in trouble in just one inning, the sixth, and got out of 'that when right fielder Lonnie Smith caught a fly ball and threw out Bill Madlock trying to advance to third for a double play. Carlton, of course, has a policy of not talking to the media. He didn't change that last night, so manager Dallas Green And catcher Bob Boone played their usual roles as Carlton's designated speakers. "When we get to talk about Lefty's ( Carlton's) performances they all run together, they're all so good," said Green. "He shut down a Pirate team that can swing the bats. And when you do that, you're doing something." "He threw very hard," said Boone, adding that CaHton's performance last night topped his throwing in Cincinnati last week where he wasn't involved in the decision. Phillies first basemen Pete Rose con tributed two singles and a double and now needs just 66 more hits to pass Stan Musial for the all-time National League base-hit record. The Phillies took a 3-0 lead in the second inning off loser John Candelaria. " Manny Trillo walked to start the inning and, after Garry Maddox flied out, Larry 3owa doubled Trillo to third. Bob Boone singled Trillo home, with Bowa advanc ing to third. Carlton grounded to first base, and Bowa scored when Bill Robin son threw home too late. The game was then delayed seven ankford wins 400 intermediates By PETE WALDRON Daily Collegian Sports Writer At the Dogwood Relays in Tennessee this past weekend, the men's track team came home with only one win. Many people who do not understhnd track would react with "Big deal?" And that's just it the Dogwood Relays is such a big event that capturing top honors in any event is a big deal. Paul Lankford was the big deal for Penn State in the 400-intermediate hur Golfers 4th at Navy Invitational By KATHY ANDREWS Daily Collegian Sports Writer The men's golf team had its hopes of a first-place finish shot down the drain in the Navy Invitational Saturday and Sunday as the Lions had to settle for a fourth-place finish. Taking first in the tournament was Temple with a 756, followed by Maryland (767), Indiana (Pa.) (786) and Penn State (788). Temple's Kevin Klier shot a tournament record two-over par 142 At the beginning of the season, Penn State's coach Joe Boyle said his freshmen would have to make some adjustments when Switching from high school to collegiate competition. However, Penn State's two starting freshmen, Mike Price and Tom Bean, have had no problems and proved it by shooting the Lions' best scores. Price had the best showing with a 153 total, which was enough for a ninth-place finish while Bean finished 10th with a 155. The Lions' Mike Boyle was next in line for Penn State with a 16th place finish and a 156 overall. Bob Holdcroft shot a 161, Bullard, Penguins have upset in mind By GARY MIHOCES Associated Press Writer • PITTSBURGH (AP) In just two weeks, Mike Bullard has' skated from junior hockey to the Stanley Cup playoff spotlight with the Pittsburgh Penguins. And the rookie center, who turned 20 last month, is chasing the puck with the exuberance of a kid chasing autographs "I'm a hockey fan. To tell you the truth, I'm a Boston Bruin . fan," Bullard said Sunday night after his two goals and an assist helped Pitttburgh beat the St. Louis Blues 6-3 to even their preliminary round series. "I used to like Bobby Orr, Esposito, all those guys. Terry O'Reilly is probably my favorite. I asked him for his hockey stick and I've got it in my living room," added Bullard, an Ottowa native. "Even when I was a little kid, I used to wear the black and gold." That was the black and gold of the Bruins. He now wears the same colors with the Penguins, whose best-of five set with the Blues will be decided tonight in St. Louis. "I like the playoffs. They bring the best out in everybody," said Bullard. "I think if we come up gung ho in St. Louis we have a good shot at winning it." Drafted on the first round by Pittsburgh last sum mer, Bullard opened the season on the Penguin roster. Bean said the Lions played well on Saturday but ran into problems on Sunday when it started raining, causing the scores to rise. The Lions were in third after Saturday's round, but slipped to fourth after Sunday "I guess I am pleased with my performance," Bean said. "I played pretty good and I'm coming along slowly. Hopefully by the next tournament, I can play better." Bean also said he is hoping the team can play better at the next tournament, which is the Kepler Invitational this weekend at Ohio State. "It's still early, but we're still improving," he said. "We just need a couple of guys to shoot low " The Lions' Steve Krolikowski said he got off to a slow start on Saturday, but despite the Lions' fourth place finish, they still looked good against the teams in their conference. "lUP and Maryland are not in our conference," he said. "But we made a good showing with respect to the teams in our conference." But after scoring one goal in 14 games in regular season, he was sent to Brantford of the Ontario Hockey Association to get more playing time and work on his defense. "I was disappointed being sent back to juniors, but they told me what to work on, and I worked on it," he said. Brantford was eliminated in the recent junior play offs, and Bullard rejoined the Penguins for the last game of the regular season. After Pittsburgh lost its first playoff game in St. Louis, coach Eddie Johnston put Bullard on a regular shift with veterans George Ferguson and Gregg Shep pard. The move was aimed at giving Pittsburgh a new look and more speed, and Bullard had two assists his first night out as Pittsburgh won in St. Louis. He scored his first playoff goal in a loss heie Saturday night, then he led the way Sunday night, breaking a third-period tie with his second goal of the game. "Bullard might have surprised a lot of people," said Johnston. "But I had a lot of confidence in him. I knew how well he could score and how well he could rush the net. Call 238.3387 NCAA, AIAW stands differ widely concerning recruiting Continued from Page 8 "Besides, right now I don't like what they've done to men's fencing nationals," Alphin said. "Their format is not really a team championship. I want to wait to see what they do with the format for women, but in the policy making and governing it seems traditionally as though they don't know the sport's parameters and are just meeting the numbers. They could care less." In fencing, Alphin said she expects that schools on the East Coast will remain AIAW, while West . Coast schools will probably switch to NCAA Aside from the lack of NCAA championships in some sports such as indoor track, NCAA recruiting regulations is another major concern among the coaches. The MAW enforces a "hands off" policy in that coaches are extreme ly limited when it comes to the amount of contact they may have with an athlete and her parents. The NCAA, however, gives coaches the freedom to actively recruit athletes. "One of the disadvantages to going to the NCAA is that most of the recruiting rules are a result of football and basketball," Schwartz said, "and all our other rules are based on football and basketball. And everybody else has to live with that. "With the AIAW, it's nice that those two sports, aren't necessarily involved in governing so much of our recruit ing and some of our other rules." Rattray said the AIAW has a specific reason for using such strict recruiting regulations "I feel that the women have their rationale for their recruiting rules, in that they were trying to take the pressure off high school athletes," she said. "I think they were trying to go along at a pace that would help women. "We (AIAW) are trying to evolve our own philosophies in relation to women athletes and we (NCAA and AIAW) are not on parallel lines at this time; women don't fit nicely into an NCAA mold." • Gymnastics coach Judi Avener, who is undecided on which structure she prefers until more information is available on the regulations and structure of the NCAA, also said she believes that the men and women are headed in different directions, and that the women's progress was cut short as a result of the NCAA's decision. "I feel that women's' athletics have actually been robbed of a chance to naturally evolve into an organization quite different from what the NCAA is right now," Avener consistancy from all four men." In the 1,600 relay, the team of Vern Lucas, Steve Evans, Steve Phelan and Lankford captured fourth in the colle giate division in 3:13.9. Gary Black, Lankford, Paul McLaughlin and John Zishka's time of 9:45 was good enough for fifth place in the distance medley. Penn State took top honors in the college division for the 3,200 relay with a time of 17:42. The tandem of Tom Wal chuck, McLaughlin, Zishka and Gary Black were the Lion machinery. _ - In the sprint medley, Lucas, Evans, Jeff Lockett and Mike Cook finished sixth in 3:29. Also finishing sixth was the 6,000 relay team of Tom Rapp, Dwight Ste phens, Gary Black and Zishka in 15:29. Sophomore Jeff Adkins took fourth in the college division for the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22. Penn State did not have any finalists in the field events. Groves said the field events were open, unlike the track events. Therefore, in the field Penn State was dealing in the. area of Olympic cali ber. "The fielders were not at their best," Groves said. "It is' different when you can see the light through the trees, but the competition was really tough. The men tended to over-push and as you can see it had an effect on the outcome." Philadelphia•Flyers are down to the proverbial wire in the National Hockey League playoffs. What had been a 2-0 Flyers' advantage in a best-of five Stanley Cup preliminary series will be decided by the fifth and final game tonight at the Spectrum before a sell-out crowd of 17,077. "It's a one-game series now and we brought it all upon ourselves. It's win or pack your bags," Flyers' coach Pat Quinn said after Sunday's 4-3 Nordique overtime win evened the series. "There's really no explanation for it," Quinn said after the Flyers lost an early 3-1 lead. "The game was going along so well. . .We went to sleep twice and it cost us both times. It should make them confident for the next game, that's for sure." The Flyers' weekend reversal at the ' Colisee in Quebec began Saturday when the Nordiques scored a 2-0 victory. "What's happening is exactly what we didn't want," said winger Paul Holmgren. "Getting into one game against these guys to decide a series. It's scary." That's precisely where the Nordiques wanted to put the Flyers. The Philadelphia defense had provided some pretty hefty intimidation during the first four games. A group of Quebec fans hung up a "Dog Pound" sign behind the Flyers bench Sunday. FEMALE ROOMMATE NEEDED TO SHARE V 2 large one bedroom apartment summer term. A/C, all utilities included. "I feel that there is a very grave danger in the NCAA in that many of the sports programs have been dropped in men's athletics, whereas in women's athletics the trend is to be growing. More programs are being established in women's athletics because the AIAW has a different philosophy." Portland is leary of •women athletes suffering an identi ty crisis. "The big disadvantage would be getting swallowed up by the male organization," she said. "I am sorry to see that the AIAW did not work or was never accepted by our counterparts. I think there is a great po§sibility of losing our identity for a while." In making their decision, the coaches will also have to weigh the advantages of the NCAA has to offer. The main advantage they cited was that the financial burden would be lifted from the athletic department because the NCAA said it will cover travel costs to championships for both men and women. "One one to say dollars, but in relation to amateur sports one has to be realistic," Rattray said. "The NCAA has the money backing them. They have the people with experience." Another advantage to the NCAA is that it will bring women's athletics further into the limelight. "I think it would make women's athletics, especially women's basketball; a little more credible," Portland said. "Everyone knows what the NCAA is and what it stands for, but not many people know the AIAW exists, no less what the initials stand for. "The credibility would be the big thing that I would appreciate, and plus consistency in law enforcement. We don't have - any full-time people in the AIAW so what is happening is there is not a consistency straight across the board on the way they handle things." Ultimately, though, the coaches agree that one govern ing structure is the best way to run men's and women's athletics. "From an administrative point of view, eventually it will be fantastic," Rattray said. "It would be very easy to dissipate information and have a good system. And the one other advantage is obviously dollars. "I know this , is outrageous to say, but I would have preferred the NCAA to abandon and the AIAW to abandon and for us to come together. It would have been nice to come up with a true merger." Men's tennis FURNISHED BEDROOM, LIVING room,. bath, cooking privileges, male only. Quiet residence begin ning June. Evenings 238.4480.
