10—The Daily Collegian Monday, March 23, 1981 Icers drop Flyers twice By JEFF SCHULER Daily Collegian Sports Writer Saturday night was Senior Night at the ice pavilion, and in a sentimental move, hockey coach Clayton John juggled his lines and defensive assignments so all six Lion seniors could start Penn State's game against the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers. But five minutes into the game, John may have had second thoughts about his decision as the Flyers, jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. The Lions, however, weren't about to let the Flyers end Penn State hockey's most memorable year on a losing note. The Lions went ahead with three goals in a 50-second span in the first period and capped the evening when Matt Glass scored on the first penalty shot of the season to give Penn State an 8-5 derision over the Flyers. That was the Lions' second win against the Flyers in as many days. Friday night, backup goalie Andy Schaum turned back 40 Flyer shots to lead the Lions to a 3-0 win in a game marred by penalties. "They were tight," John said of the Lion starters Saturday night. "I put COLLEGMN. -CLASSIFIED . We hadn't practiced it, so they were all playing strange positions. "We sat back in the beginning. It's hard to come out and be really super intense when we had just beat them the night before, and as a result we had layed back a little bit. Then we had to get out of it." Once the sentimental journey was over and the regular lines were reunited, the Lions (24-6), behind 2-0, got down to business. First, with the Lions on a power play, John Grainda parked on Flyer goalie Tim Ondra's doorstep in perfect position to tip in a blast by Dean Petracca at 12:08. Twelve seconds later, the same combination clicked on what was almost a carbon copy of the first goal, and the score was tied. Only 38 seconds later, Joe Battista tipped in a pass from Glenn DeStefano, and the Lions led 3-2. Both teams added goals in the opening period, with Dave Brodie scoring for Penn State, as the Lions led 4-3 at in termission. It could have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for Ondra and NEED A COOL apartment for the hot summer? Furnished one bed room, all utilities. Rent negotiable. Call 234-0563. Second-period goals by Battista, Roger Furse and Glass offset two Flyers goals as the Lions led 7-5 after two periods. Glass provided the only excitement of the third period other than the scuffles that broke out in the final minutes when he broke in alone on Ondra with the Lions shorthanded. Dragged down at the last second by a desperation chop by a Flyer defenseman, Glass was awarded a penalty shot, which he converted for the final goal of the game. "I hurt my wrist on the first shot, so I didn't even know if I wanted to shoot it," Glass said. "It takes a while you have to stand back there, and the longer you stand, the more the pressure builds. I just tried not to think about it. "Then Glenn DeStefano gave me a little tip on what to do. I guess he was watching the goalies, and he knew how to freeze them. He told me what to do, and I did what he told me. And it went in." SLAPSHOTS: Saturday night's game attracted 1,141 people. The shutout followed an 8-1 win over a strong Swarthmore team Friday and a 7-2 victory over powerhouse Columbia Saturday. The Lions' No.l player, Bill Shilling, led his team past the hapless Panthers by beating Pitt's Rip Wagner 6-3, 9-6, 6-1 in an unexpectedly tight match. "After the first set," Shilling said, mentally let down. Physically, I felt good. I knew I could beat 'him; I felt I was better than him." He 'reached back and finished the long, hard-hitting match with strong serves and deep service winners. What brought him back? "Wanting to win," Shilling said Shilling had strong support behind him as teammate Bill Pilardi didn't let a bad pulled groin sideline him as he beat Pitt's Doug White 6-4, 6-2. "It hurts a lot when I have to run hard for the ball," Pilardi said. "But I didn't have to ( run) much today." Not to be outdone, Penn State's No. 3 player, Nate Levine, easily downed Pitt's Mark Newberg 6-0, 6-1. Penn State's Tom Beckhard, though, got the Lions' share of the day's glory, as he shut out Pitt's Ron Grimm 6-0, 6-0. Lion Jeff Factor defeated Panther Tony Calderone in similar fashion, volleying often en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win: Penn State's Rob Pinkham continued the Lions' winning streak by downing Jeff Brand of Pitt 6-2, 6-0. Doubles provided Shilling with another chance to showcase COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIED ADS HELP WANTED CAN'T WORK 9-5? Sell Avon and work when you want. "Bill and I complement each other," Factor said. "He can return a serve easier, but we can both put away a volley. He's more finesse, and I'm more power." • Likewise, Lion Jon Whiteside complemented Levine nicely as they clobbered their Pittsburgh opponents 6-2, 6-0. "I don't want to say they're bad," Whiteside said, "There just weren't a lot of long points," Pilardi and Beckhard rounded out the doubles play with a 6- 1, 7-6 win over their opponents. The Lions ran over Columbia with the same strong per formances that carried them over Pitt. "I expected a tougher match," Pilardi said after he downed Columbia's Jon Termotto 6-2, 6-2. "I don't think he was used to our courts. They play on clay, and ours is faster." Shilling also played well in defeating Columbia's Andy Caulfield 6-2, 6-4. "(Shilling) just started off well," the Australian-born Caulfield said. "And I never got into the match. I had expected to win." The Lions hadn't beaten Columbia in four or five years. "It was nice to have them on our courts," Lion coach Holmes Cathrall said. "It kind of neutralized their homecourt ad vantage." The night before playing Columbia, the Lions fared well against an equally impressive Swarthmore team. Both Shilling, Pilardi and Beckhard had to resort to tie-breakers to win their matches, and the doubles teams of Shilling and Factor, Levine and Whiteside, and Pilardi and Beckhard did as well. The Lions started poorly at the championships, which were won by the University of Pennsylvania. Saber fencer George Vandemark was eliminated in the preliminaries, and foil fencer Jeff Brown qualified for the final round as the lowest seed in his weapon. The only fencer not experiencing any trouble in the early rounds was epee representative Mike Corona, the only Lion fencer with previous NCAA experience. Corona ended up seventh in epee after he and San Jose State's Peter Schiffrin tied for sixth place with identical 16-7 records. Corona lost on indicators, which are procedures used to break ties. Brown finished the tournament 10-13 and in 16th place in the foil division. Based on his performance, Corona was named honorable mention All- WHO SAYS GREECE and Troy can't get along. Corona said he was pleased with his fencing but had hoped to do better. "One more win and I would have (placed higher)," Corona said. "Near the end, I picked the bout I wanted to win, but I lost it 5-4. "I feel I fenced better than I did last year. I beat a lot of people that placed ahead of me." Garret, who has previouMy won national championships while coaching at Illinois, had nothing but praise for the Lion fencers. "Under the circumstances, I think the performances of all the in dividuals in the squad were ex tremely good," Garret said. "Even though the present format depends on having three fencers in the finals to obtain the national championship, 13th out of 53 was not bad." The„ most difficult ,problem the fencers had to overcome was having to be mentally prepared for every bout fenced over the three-day period of the tournament. Corona said he did not feel right on the first day, and after the second day he was ready to leave. BETH, HAPPY BELATED 21st Here's a personal, for someone spe cial. Love, Cosmic. American Cancer Societ "After a while, you start to say to yourself, 'I can't wait until it's over' " Corona said. "But you can't let that happen." Brown said the length of the meet was one of the determining factors in who won the meet. "!Anyone can get lucky on one day," Brown said, "but in order to do well over three days, you have to be consistent." Brown also said even though the loss of Vandemark early in the tournament was a disappointment, it made him and Corona fence even harder so the team would do well. "George wanted it just as had as the rest of us," Brown said. "He trained hard but had a bad day. He went in with a lot of pressure. With all that pressure on the first day, things just didn't click. There are days like that, and it's unfortunate that it happened to him when it did." Brown was happy with his per formance and said the experience he gained will be very valuable in the future.
