B—The Daily Collegian Monday, Dec. 15 1980 Gladys really a Ham at end By DENISE BACHMAN Daily Collegian Sports Writer Penn State created its own takeoffs of "Rocky" and "Rocky II." But its versions are called Jack Ham, staged from 1967-1970, and Jack Ham 11, playing this season. Only this time around Gene Gladys has the starring role. True, Jack Ham was about a linebacker and Jack Ham II is about a defensive end, and even though Ham's and Gladys' positions differ, Gladys has tried to mold himself into the same player Ham portrays. "I always think of myself as a Jack Ham-type player," Gladys said, "because I'm not overly large and I try to rely more on quickness and speed rather than raw physical strength. I consider myself a finesse type player, like Jack Ham, who comes up to make the big plays but who is also consistent. "I've watched Jack Ham and I just marvel at the way he does things, and I thought if there's anybody I'd like to be like, that's the man I'd like to Model myself after.", If Ham would have seen Gladys play this season, a wide grin of ap proval certainly would have ap peared on his face. After all, the 6-1 1 / 2 , 214-pound senior rose from near obscurity in his first three years to become an integral part of the Lions' awesome defense. This season Gladys found opposing quarterbacks to his liking, recording six sacks for a loss of 37 total yards to grab team honors in that department. He also has made 58 tackles, trailing linebacker Chet Parlavecchio (72) and hero Matt Bradley (59). That's quite an improvement for a guy who had just 30 tackles last season. "I had better concentration this year on what I was doing," Gladys said. "I cut down on my social life, which was important, and just the ex perience of having played and being able to recognize situations has helped me a lot, too." Remaining free from major in juries also has been a contributing factor. Last year Gladys suffered a sprained ankle, forcing him to watch the last three regular season games from the sidelines before returning to the starting lineup for the Liberty Bowl. Since Gladys' first three years were filled with ups and downs, he was determined to make his final season at Penn State one to remember. "I probably worked harder this summer than at any time in my life," he said, "because I knew it was going to be my last shot, and if 'I ever 'aspired to do anything, this was it." Gladys saw . his hard work come to a CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING INFORMATION Ads can be placed in person at our office, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or be mailed to Room 1 26 Carnegie Building (make checks payable to: The Daily Collegian). "It was just a quick reaction," Gladys said, "and that's the kind of thing, as a ballplayer, that you strive for just to react to something without having to think about it. I thought, well maybe I made some strides over the season." Hard work has become a Gladys trademark because ever since he donned a Lion uniform he's constant ly strived to better himself. His ef forts haven't gone unnoticed either as he was presented the Jim O'Hora Award, which goes to the defensive player who shows "exemplary con duct, loyalty, interest, attitude and improvement" during the spring drills of his sophomore year. This season he was also cited for his outstanding performances; not only was he named ABC-TV's player of the game after his 'ghowing against Pitt, but he also received the Quarterback Club Award as the Lions' unsung hero. He narrowed his choices to Penn State and West Virginia. What made the Mountaineers' offer so tempting was that they recruited Gladys as a quarterback the posi tion that was home to him after direc ting his father's team in high school while Penn State recruited him as a defensive player. Defense, however, was nothing new to him as he also played linebacker in high school. Penn State that dream was out the window. But just as long as I played somewhere (for the Lions), that's all that mattered." Unfortunately for Gladys, his col legiate playing days are coming to a quick end. The next time he takes to the football field in Tempe, Ariz., against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, it will be the last time he will wear a Penn State uniform. "I'm sad to see it end," Gladys said, "because it's the last time I'll play for Penn State. Besides, the way things went this year for me the team was so close and we ac complished a lot of things we set out to do. "Since Ohio State's the last game, I want to go out and play my best game. Watch ONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL on a 6 FOOT SCREEN Prep all-star contest at PSU still in doubt By TOM VERDUCCI Daily Collegian Sports Writer Penn State athletic officials will have to wait until January to find out if they may host the Pennsylvania High School Football Coaches Association 1981 all star game. The coaches association delayed a decision Saturday on whether to hold its all-star game in Beaver Stadium, Al toona or Hershey while forming a seven man committee to further study each of the three proposals. In other action, the coaches unanimously agreed to begin litigation against the Pennsylvania In terschdasticAthletic Association to br ing high school football playoffs to the state. The all-star game committee will meet Dec. 21 to draw up a recommenda tion which will be mailed to approx imately 40 members of the coaches association board of directors, said Bob May, president of the association. Each member then will mail in his vote on which proposal to accept. May said he was not disappointed that the association did not reach a decision after meeting Friday and Saturday in Milesburg, especially since the rival PIAA Big - -33 all-star game has been dropped. Houston sinks Clark scores 3 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Terald Clark rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns, one in each of the first three periods, as Houston manhandled error-plagued Navy 35-0 yesterday in the third Garden State Bowl game. Clark and Terry Elston scored on 1-yard runs following Navy mistakes in the first period, David Barrett and Clark had second-quarter touchdown runs of 14 and 26 yards, and Clark, who rushed for 859 yards during the regular season, ad ded a 2-yard TD run to cap a 71-yard drive following the second-half kickoff. Navy's problems started on the first scrimmage play when Eddie Meyers fumbled and Houston's Kelly McDonald recovered at the Middies' 31. Leo Truss set up the Cougars' second touchdown by blocking a Navy punt that fluttered out of bounds at the losers' 43 after traveling only 8 yards. Navy, which lost -only eight fumbles during an 8-3 regular season, lost the ball for the second time in the game when Jon Ross fumbled at his 26 midway through the second period after a 21-yard return on the kickoff following RIDE WANTED TO BOSTON AREA after Sun. "Once we got started, too many things came up: We decided it was better to be a little cautious, a little conservative." May said the delay also allows the association to petition the National Col legiate Athletic Association to see which proposals it would sanction since all postseason exhibitions must be approv ed by the NCAA. The Penn State proposal, a detailed draft primarily drawn up by ad ministrative assistant Tim Curley, . 1 would bring a National Football League game into Beaver Stadium . as soon as 1982. The proposal calls for a Pennsylvania all-stars vs. New Jersey all-stars high school game in late July with the possibility of a Pittsburgh Steelers- . Philadelphia Eagles exhibition matchtrP' , ' the second game of the double-header: In the association's fight for state playoffs, May said he will ask the association's attorney, Marvin Wilenzik of Doylestown, to represent the coaches. "We'll take it to court if that's whatit takes," May said. "We have to find out ) ) what we have to do to get state football playoffs." Navy, TDs Barrett's touchdown recovered for Houston Clark, who finished the first half witk) 112 yards on 18 of his 26 overall carries, covered the distance in one quick smash up the middle for the Cougars' fourth touchdown, and Elston's 2-point conver sion run made it 28-0 at halftime. The Cougars, who tied for second,., place in the Southwest Conference, - wound up the season with a 7-5 mark. In addition to suffering its only block ed punt of the season, Navy lost its top rusher when Meyers had his ribs banged up late in the opening period. The Mid dies also had a pass intercepted bi ) defensive end Greg Harmon late in the second quarter, while Steve Fehr, who made 17 of 23 field goal attempts during the regular season, bleW a chip-shot 27-yarder. Vikings By The Associated Press The Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons clinched division titles with victories yesterday while the New Orleans Saints avoided the embar rassment of becoming the National Football League's first 15-game loser by upsetting the New York Jets 21-20. In other NFL action, the defending Super Bowl 'champion Pittsburgh Steelers kept their slim playoff hopes alive by rallying for two touchdOwns in the final period and beating the Kansas City Chiefs 21-16, and the Philadelphia Eagles stopped the St. Louis Cardinals 17-3 for their 12th win. The Vikings won the National Con ference's Central Division crown in dramatic fashion, beating the Cleveland Browns 28-23 on the final play of the game when Ahmad Rashad caught a deflected, 47-yard desperation pass from Tommy Kramer after time had expired. Kramer completed 38 of 49 passes for 456 yards, setting club records for completions and passing yardage. The 456 yards was the 10th highest total in NFL history. Rashad caught nine passes for 142 yards; including a 12-yard scoring toss with 1:35 left that put the Vikings within striking range. The Falcons, getting three second half touchdown passes from Steve Bailkowski, trounced the San Fran cisco 49ers 35-10 for their ninth con secutive victory and the first NFC West championship in their 15-year history. And the Saints, after losing their first 14 starts of the season, finally got a taste of victory thanks to Tony Galbreath's two 1-yard scoring dives in the final period, the second with 4:49 to play. With one week to go in the regular season, not a single team in the American Conference has clinched a playoff berth. Seven clubs are still fighting for five spots Buffalo, New England, Cleveland, Houston, Pitt sburgh, San Diego and Oakland. In the NFC, Dallas, Philadelphia, Minnesota and Atlanta have clinched playoff berths while Los Angeles and Detroit are in the running for the final spot. Buffalo and Cleveland missed chances to wrap up AFC division titles by losing Sunday. The Bills dropptd a 24-2 decision to New England, whom they lead by one game in the AFC East, as Patriots quarterback Matt Cavanaugh threw two touchdown passes and Vagas Ferguson ran for 81 yards and one score. Buffalo now must beat San Francisco next week to win the divi sion. the 49qrs win ,aud New England beats New Orleans, the clubs would finish. in a tie and the Patriots would get the division crown SUBLET NEED FEMALE 'TO share ' l 2 large one bedroom apartment spring term. 4 Call Lou 238-0835. By losing to Minnesota, Cleveland blew a chance to wrap up the AFC Central and dropped into a tie at 10-5 with Houston, which beat Green Bay 22-3 behind a 181-yard, two touchdown performance by Earl Campbell. Wrestlers split weekend matches By JEFF SCHULER • Daily Collegian Sports Writer The wrestling team came back from upstate New York with a split from its weekend matches, but Penn State coach Rich Lorenzo said he was pleased with both efforts a 33-14 win over Cornell Friday and a 21-19 loss to highly-regarded Syracuse Saturday. "I was pleased with Friday," Lorenzo said. "We wrestled aggressivly and got, some excellent performances from about seven of the guys. Saturday, I knew it was going to be tough without those three starters (injured 150-pounder Mike Doher ty, 158-pounder Guy Petrowski, and 177-pounder Andy Bingaman). We each won five bouts, but we were outmanned in the upper weights." Top gun for the Lions this weekend was freshman 126-pounder John Manotti, who came up with a pair of pins, in cluding one over Syracuse's Dale Mills, the defending Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association champion. "I had nothing to lose (against ,Mills)," Manotti said. "I just went out and wrestled. I didn't know what to expect from him." ~..~(. Manotti pinned Cornell's Len Biles at 4:09 on Friday night, then pinned Mills at 4:06 on Saturday. "You always go out and look for the pin," Manotti said. "I was ahead in both matches, saw the chance, and went for it." The two-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Associa tion champion from Mifflinburg faces another tough opponent tomorrow night in Tennessee's Mike Gistizia, who finished sixth in nationals last year. "Wrestling *the best helps you to improve," Manotti said. "You can't get better wrestling poor competition." Manotti's pin on Friday night was one of three for the Lions. Joel Johnson pinned Marty Majeske at 5:44, and Jim Sleeper capped the night with a pin at 1:29 over the Big Red's Bill Morrissee. Saturday, the Orangemen's superiority in the upper weights was too much for the Lions, as 167-pounder John Hanrahan was the only Penn State winner in the final six bouts. The Orange pulled it out when heavyweight Mike Rotunda pinned Jim Sleeper at 4:56 to erase a four-point Lion lead. "It's just one of 10 matches. We've been meeting some fine heavyweights (Eric) Klassen of Michigan and this guy Rotunda tonight. "Syracuse has about six really good kids. I think this was one of the first times we've been beaten yet felt positive about the match. The guys really wrestled intensely." While none of the additions to the Lion lineup came up with wins against Syracuse, they still had strong showings. Mike Slowey (150) lost to Todd Bowers, 13-6; Kirby Wood (158) to Tim Catalfo, 5-2,; Tom Slowey (177) to Kurt Honis on a pin at 4:04; and Sleeper on a pin to Mike Rotunda at 4:56. "Rotunda would have been EIWA champ last year if he wasn't redshirted," Lorenzo said. "Mike had a heck of - a pair of matches for his first varsity action. Kirby showed he was aggressive, and Tom didn't lay down, either." An interesting sidelight to the Syracuse match was the mat chup at 134 between Lion Bob Bury and the Orange's Mark lacobelli. Both were three-time New York State prep cham pions, and Lorenzo said that there has only been three in history. Bury came out on top, 11-6. He also won Friday, 8-1, over Cornell's Sam Edwards. "Bury looked good on the weekend," Lorenzo said. "He's still a little sore from the tournament, but he and John (Hanrahan) are starting to show the consistency we need from them. Hanrahan had two wins a 13-1 super-superior decision over Ken Griffin of Cornell and a 12-3 superior decision over Syracuse's Joe Collican. Other double' winners for the Lions were 118-pounder Scott Webster and 142-pounder Bernie Fritz. MAT NOTES: Syracuse's 118-pounder Gene Mills didn't wrestle. The world Cup titlist was in Japan for an international meet. . . .The Lions won the battle of the takedowns, getting 18 against Cornell and 19 against Syracuse. The Big Red had 11 and the Orangemen 12. . . .Lorenzo was impressed with Syracuse.
