6—The Daily Collegian Tuesday Oct. 14, 1980 Lions can't afford a loss By RICH SCARCELLA Daily Collegian Sports Writer If you told Men's soccer coach Walter Bahr before the season that an October contest with East Stroudsburg would be a crucial game for Penn State, he would have asked if you were also crazy enough to perform a stunt on "That's Incredible!" But after dropping a 2-1 decision to Maryland last Friday, Bahr may be the one ready to try almost anything if the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions (8-2) lose to' the Warriors (3-3-2) at 7:15 tonight at Jeffrey Field. Meetings with ranked clubs William & Mary and Connecticut remain to be played. Another loss to an unranked team could be the last gasp for Penn State's chances of qualifying for the Na tional Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. "We should win the (East Stroudsburg) game," Bahr said. "We can't afford to lose to teams like that. Right now our problem is that we're playing good against the top teams and a bit mediocre against the average teams." The Lions have completed the first half of their schedule with an 8-2 mark. If they maintain the same pace during the second half, Bahr said, it should be enough to make the NCAA event. . DOW'? mum. the daily collegian t S "If. we're 8-2 in the second half," he said, "we'll finish 16-4 with a good chance of getting in. Finishing 17-3 would be even safer." The Warriors can't be overlooked, even though they have never defeated Penn State. Last year East Stroudsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Lions went on to a 4-2 victory. "East Stroudsburg • has had a good team over the last eight years," Bahr said. "The last two or three years they've been down, though. We struggl ed last year against them." They may be a Division II team, but the Warriors have a rich soccer heritage. Three of their alumni compete in the North American Soccer League: Montreal goalkeeper Bob Rigby; Mem phis goalie Bob Stetler; and Los Angeles defender Franz St. Lot. Eight starters return from last year for East Stroudsburg, including leading goal-scorers Bob Heavy and Dragon Stostic. Goalkeeper Chuck Diegel, who sports an impressive 1.53 goals-against average, is coming off knee surgery. The Warriors have also tied West Chester, I-1, a club that Penn State squeaked by, 3-2, in double-overtime. "The players realized that you don't win just on talent," Bahr said. "You win on talent and hard work. We had enough of a shock Friday. You have to give Maryland credit. Their players worked hard." The Lions had good movement on of fense Friday, Bahr said, but missed more than a few scoring opportunities. "We had the ball down there enough," he said. "We played good down there. When we got it back to 1-1, I thought we'd pull it out. I'm not concerned about get ting the ball down there ( offensive zone), but getting it in. "A loss like this could be the best thing for us. We lost to Maryland last year at this time of the season and then we started a big winning streak. Maybe history will repeat itself." THE RATHSKELLER Monday Big Screen T.V. For five weeks the Buffalo Bills led a :charmed existence. Even when they trailed going into the fourth quarter, they somehow found a way to win. Not Sunday. Buffalo's bubble was finally burst as the Baltimore Colts, led by Bert Jones, beat the Bills 17-12 to spoil the National Football League's last perfect record. In racing to a 5-0 mark with their best start since 1964, the Bills twice had rallied to win in the final period. So when they found themselves behind the Colts 17-9 going into the fourth quarter, they weren't particularly worried. "We had a feeling that 'we'd come back," Bills guard Reggie McKenzie said. "It was just a matter of stopping the mistakes." But it never happened. All the Bills could come up with was a 20-yard field POLICY • • Ads must be prepaid. C!
