The 69-year-old Milosi, a naturalized American and a California resident since 1960, was born in the Lithua nian village of Vilna which became part of Poland in 1923. He was the ninth U.S. citizen and third writer in Polish to win the literature prize. A guest lecturer in Slavic languages at the Universi ty of California at Berkeley for 20 years, Milosz is mar ried and has two sons. "The world that Milosz depicts in his poetry and pro se works and essays is the world in which man lives after having been driven out of paradise," the Swedish Academy said in announcing the $215,000 award. Milosz's poetry has not been published in Poland since 1951, when he chose to leave the country to live in the West. "People lived in close contact with still primitive nature. This country and this culture, and most of its people, no longer exist," the Academy said of Milosz's homeland. "The Nazi terror and genocide, the war, and later the Stalinistic tyranny have wiped them out in hardships exceeding what Poland and the Baltic states have suf fered many tithes before." Polish critics rate Milosz's poems on the Warsaw uprising of 1944 among his best, and his works recently began to resurface as a result of the easing of censorship. Milosz's poetry was applauded by shipyard workers in Gdansk when a group of artists recited it during labor unrest last summer. Like the 1,979 literature laureate, Odysseus Elytis of Greece, Milosz was-active in the anti-Nazi resistance and wrote a volume of poems called "Invincible Song" protesting the atrocities. Milosz's cultural roots are similar to those of Isaac Bashevis Singer, the 1978 literature laureate, and he is related to the French poet Oscar V. de L. Milosz. He joined the foreign service partially to avoid censorship. He was accepted in Poland's intellectual elite but de nounced Stalinist rule in 1951 when he moved to Paris. In 1953 he published "The Captive Mind," a work sharply critical of Stalinism and East European intellectuals. . While in Paris he translated a number of woiks eluding some by T.S. Eliot, Walt Whitman, Carl Sand . burg and Pablo Neruda. He wrote for the Paris-based P,olish emigrant publishing house Instytut Literacki. _ He has been translated into English and German and considers himself a difficult poet. . The Academy said his Lithuanian heritage is vivjilly portiayed in his 1955 poetic work "The Valley of IsSa." Milosz won the 1953 Prix Litteraire EurOpeen for his; ; first work published in French, La Prise Du Pouvoir, He was awarded the Polish P.E.N. (UPI) Anna Mae ql Saunders, still awed by the sight of "Bigfoot," said yesterday she, does not want another look at the 7-foot creature covered with long, white hair she is cer tain she saw last weekend outside the home of her son-in-law in rural Mason County. "I just hope that thing doesn't come back," said Saunders, 60. "I never saw anything like it in my life. It just looked like a big white, fuzzy thing standing there on the porch. I never saw it's face; it was above the 7-foot-high door," she said. Saunders' son-in-law, Charles Fulton, said the creature had one of his roosters when he opened the door, but either dropped or threw it as it jumped off the potch. He described the so-called "Bigfoot" • as having long, white hair with "glowing animal-like eyes." Fulton, 39, went out side and saw it standing between the house and an outbuilding. He fired two shots with a .22-caliber pistol at the creature, but they seemed to have no effect. "It loped off at a slow-motion kind of gallop," he said. Fulton and his family were at their rural home in a heavily wooded area watching television last Saturday night when one of the children came into the living room and said someone was turn ing the back door knob. Thinking the child was joking, Fulton made him sit and watch TV. "A few minutes later, something liked to have tore my front door off," Fulton said. He said he did not tell authorities about the sighting because he feared no one would believe him. Saunders and the three children said they also saw the creature from inside the house. Fulton discounted the possibility the creature was a bear because of its upright position, and said it definitely was not a man in. costume. friday 6:00 WEATHER-WORLD STARSKY AND HUTCH (XD (E) CM NEWS O JOKER'S WILD 0 HAPPY DAYS AGAIN 6:30 C 3) QUEST FOR FOOD M NBC NEWS OD ABC NEWS 0 TIC TAC DOUGH GB CID in CBS NEWS SANFORD AND SON 7:00 Ca) MACNEIL-LEHRER REPORT 0 M.A.S.H.
