The HRC has battled with the school board for years and has op posed the desegregation plan that went into effect last week, calling it inadequate. Calif. wine strike fermenting SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) The California wine strike spread to three more large wineries yesterday while more and more truckloads of ripe grapes rolled up for processing. Workers left their jobs at Almaden, Guild and Paul Masson plants, raising the total of strikers to 3,000. In a walkout that began last Friday, 11 of the 23 major companies involved in the dispute have now been struck. The 23 companies produce 80 percent of California's wine. The union strategy was to add two or three new strike targets daily on a schedule dictated by the ripening of the grape crop. . Major issues were a union proposal for a 30 percent wage increase over three years and the length of the Matthau to face trial board Walter Matthau Transportation grant moving WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate Appropriations Committee has ap proved nearly $l4 million for Penn sylvania transportation projects in the proposed fiscal 1981 federal budget. • The • funding authorization bill, whicfi ( 1 : 10 VV goes to a Senate floor vote, includessB.4 million, for completion of a control tower at Philadelphia Airport and $5.7 million for renovation of Harrisburg's downtown railroad station. "No, Paul, no!" the drama coach pleaded. Perhaps expertise in the Stanislaysky method accounted for the blood-curdling realism of his scream, figured a woman who overheard the cries Tuesday: But about six hours later, Clarke the radio voice of the mystery character "The Whistler" was found murdered in his studio. He had been stabbed in the chest and neck. His body was found lying on a small practice stage in the studio. A pair of bloody scissors, believed to be the murder weapon, was found nearby. Delivery room friend soothing BOSTON (AP) Women who have a friendly companion with them during childbirth experience faster, simpler deliveries and are more affectionate toward their newborn babies, a study shows. The report concludes that a reassuring face during labor calms anxieties and may be an easy way to reduce the number of delivery problems for both the mother and child. Increasingly in recent years, American women have taken husbands or friends into the delivery room with them, but many mothers still give birth surrounded only by doctors and nurses. "Certainly a rule is that no mother should ever labor and deliver alone (without a companion)," Dr. John Kennel, one of the researchers, said in an interview. "That's awfully clear." The new report, published in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that when women were accompanied by a companion, they had far fewer complications during childbirth, and their labor lasted only half as long. In the first 45 minutes after birth, these mothers talked to their babies, smiled at them and stroked them more than women who gave traditional births. Last month, the agency asked a state Supreme Court judge to tem porarily halt the plan because it leaves nearly 50 percent of the district's elementary schools segregated. Meanwhile, the National Association of Neighborhood Schools filed a suit in federal court seeking an injunction against the plan. probationary period for new em ployees. No new negotiations were scheduled. Management said the work was getting done, but union officials said there was no way the wineries could handle the whole crop. If the grapes ripen all at once in a hot spell, or if ' rain forces an in tensified crush to avoid rot, there would be danger that part of California's 2.6 million ton crop of wine grapes would spoil. Field hands who pick the grapes were not involved. The strikers were winemakers, bottlers, warehousemen and maintenance personnel belonging to the AFL-CIO Winery Distillery and Allied Workers. HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Picketing actors circled MGM studioS yesterday as one of their most famous colleagues, Walter Matthau, prepared to face a trial committee on charges of "conduct unbecoming a member of the Screen Actors Guild." Matthau appeared at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel last Friday and met with two dozen entertainment reporters who were brought to town by Avco Embassy to promote the movie "Hopscotch," which opens this month. • It is the first known action taken against a performer in the 52-day nationwide strike by more than 67,000 actors. As a result, Matthau could have his SAG card lifted, be suspended from the union or be fined. ment in the Senate The airport control tower project already received $3.1 million in federal funds last year and will be matched by about $1.2 million from the city of Philadelphia, said an aide to committee member Sen. Richard SchWeiker,R4ia . The tower , was allocated about $2.3 million in the House bill, but the senator's aide said that specific appropriation was based on erroneous information and should be increased in the conference report. As expected, the committee also approved funds for refurbishing Harrisburg's old Penn Central railroad station. Police yesterday were checking Clarke's appointment book, hoping to uncover the identity of the mysterious "Paul." The body was discovered by a janitor who let himself into the 10th floor studio with a pass key after friends called the building engineer asking that someone check on Clarke, who recently had been ill. Clarke, 68, was the radio voice of the Whistler and served as an nouncer-narrator for the nationally broadcast Theater of the Air in the heyday of radio. He also was a cast member of the famed radio classic series "The Shadow," and was a recurring character usually the villain on the 1930 s radio soap opera "Betty and Bob." He had taught drama since the 19505. Kennel said in the interview that another mature woman, such as the pregnant woman's mother or sister, may be a better companion during childbirth than the husband, because the other woman is more likely to keep calm. "Particularly during the birth of the first baby, the fathers are often more nervous than the mothers, so it's hard for them to be as supportive as you'd like," Kennel said. In the study, conducted at the Social Security Hospital in Guatemala City, 20 women were accompanied . during childbirth by untrained strangers who rubbed their backs, held their hands, talked to them and simply acted as friends. The results "are particularly relevant to the care of low-income, single or teen-age mothers, who may not receive positive support from their families during labor and delivery and who may have had no formal or strong cultural preparation for childbirth," the researchers wrote. "An untrained woman provided the friendly support in this study, but similar or greater benefits may be expected when a family member or a friend remains with the mother throughout the labor and delivery," they added. Convicted Army chaplain says jury racist WUERZBURG, West Germany (UPI) A military court yesterday found a black U.S. Army chaplain guilty of using obscene language to his female assistant. It was the first time an officer has been sentenced in the Army's recent wave of sexual harassment trials. Capt. James R. Johnson, 41, of Prescott, Ark., was fined $3,000 by the all white jury and ordered to be reprimanded by his commanding officer Maj. Gen. R. L. Wetzel. The charges listed how Johnson related obscene sexual fantasies to his woman assistant and displayed conduct unbecoming to an officer in what his defense attorney termed "the most incredible trial I have ever seen." Johnson, who pleaded innocent to all charges and claimed •he was a victim of racism in the Aschaf fenburg military community, was, however, cleared of a charge of sexual assault on the same woman and of alleged advances made to a second woman. The court found Johnson, father of five childrem, guilty of using very crude language in telling his woman assistant, Linda Sue O'Herne, 35, a six time divorcee, about a fantasy of sexual intercourse with her. The defense charged a confession about the incident made to a military criminal investigator in Wuerzburg and signed by Johnson was obtained under duress after three hours of interrogation. "There are any number of officers involved in cases like this," Johnson said after the sentence. "I expected to get acquitted but I didn't. But there was a milestone made today. This issue of sexual harassment has gone so far that when a man, a . ; , supervisor, counsels a female, she has the option to say, , whatever she pleases about what happened." • The court dismissed chtrges from Mrs. O'Herne that, Johnson had assaulted her by putting his arm around;... ; her and rubbing the lower part of his body against her as she satat her desk in the chapel. Another woman, Sgt. Ist Class Myrtice Thomas,; charged Johnson had asked her on another occasion to • dance and then proposed, "When are you and I going to . Council normally meets on Thursdays, but the meeting was switched because of the Jewish New Year holiday, Rosh Hashana . Only one witness was called before Fullam adjourned court. Charles Sawyer, clerk of Philadelphia City Council, told briefly of the duties and powers of Schwartz and Jannotti. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Rohn, in outlining the government case, said Schwartz and Jannotti participated with another Democratic councilman, Louis Johanson, and Johanson's former law partner, Howard Criden, in advancing. the conspiracies of racketeering and extortion. The indictment charges the alleged crimes occurred in January. Johanson and Criden were convicted last month in another unrelated Abscam political corruption trial and Fullam severed them from the present case so that guily verdict wouldn't prejudice the jury. "The three councilmen, aided by Criden, received bribes in exchange for their promise to use their official duties to help a fictitious Arab sheik in building a hotel in South Philadelphia," Rohn said. Rohn said Johanson got $25,000 and Criden $5,000 and that their law firm, the vehicle in the alleged illegal enterprise, shared in the payoff proceeds. "The government will produce evidence showing there was an FBI undercover operation by two agents purporting to represent the wealthy sheik who offered 'up front' money to officials who could take care of problems such as zoning, variances, etc.," Rohn said. "Mr. Schwartz said he could deliver City Council to agent Michael Wald (one of the FBI men masquarading as Arab representatives) on his birthday, and all he wanted was $30,000," the prosecutor said. "Jannotti said he was Schwartz's right hand man (as majority leader) and that his vote (for the hotel) would be there and only with that assurance was $lO,OOO passed over."
