You have to exercise more itliscipline in order not to be abused by ■your greater freedom. If you don’t •control it, it will control you. ! ’ Brechner delivers this age-old jyvisdom in now-you-listen-to-me tones. !Very definitely, he thinks he’s on to some j&vine revelation and he’s out to con the [impressionable youth among us into [thinking the same. For example, his ‘Section on taking notes includes the '‘following comment: “Most students 'don’t know how to take notes well. Here [is my personal method: it will give you in*les that are great for review before an [examination.” His “personal method” consists of 'Some abbreviations and symbols Coupled with the practice of copying [over the day’s notes. Fine, this is a good [System, and most students who excel jprtibably practice some variation of it. ‘But it is not the only way and it is cer- not a guaranteed key to success. [ Brechner similarly advertises “The jiew Method of Studying for Finals.” [According to Brechner, "The most cbmmon method of study is to give up all qtjtside activities, pull many all nighters, and concentrate solely on studying in the two-week exam period. . . . Just not good. I’ll show you a better way.” The claim that this is the most com mon method of study on college cam puses is open to debate, but so are many of the generalizations Brechner makes about campus life. His “new method” (I Hours: 8:00 to 6:00 pm. 357 Calder Way * 234-2670 £ '. r 4SPPHOTO Back to Books Special 50% off on any roll of Kodak film when you bring in a roll of film for process and printing to: ASA«PHOTO! I am puzzled regarding the necessity to study in reverse in order to avoid cramming. Does Brechner think students are so stupid they can’t figure out that finals will require some budgeting of study time? And doesn’t he realize that on a term system, three weeks before finals may be before the last midterm? This condescending attitude-coupled with an evangelical approach is not likely to shore up the timorous fresh man’s confidence. Brechner also fails to address the areas which cause most people at least equal stress as the academic adjustment to college, namely, the emotional adjustment. He does include a short section on “How to Have A Great Social Life at College,” but the advice herein is mainly: study before socializing, join clubs for con nections and fun. Sound advice, but not nearly com prehensive. What if you don’t have any friends to socialize with? How do you handle being homesick for the first time in your life at age 18? And what about contraception, alcohol, the adjustment to being your parents’ child and an in dependent adult at the same time? These are concerns of major importance to the incoming freshman and Brechner does not even explain why he has left them out of his “College Survival Kit.” There is a paradox inherent in any advice, no matter ,what language it is couched in: Those who need advice the most seldom heed it; those who consider advice most carefully seldom, need it very badly. And so it is with Brechner’s book. Good students can make the leap into college without spending $3 for a sermon they don’t really need and ad vice they will get from many sources. And most poor students are not going to revolutionize their academic habits just because Irv Brechner tells them to. it' 6:00 (I) WEATHER-WORLD 0 BRADY BUNCH ®®33)@ news 0 JOKER’S WILD CD ODD COUPLE 6:30 3) ENJOYING WINE WITH PAUL GILLETTE OI LOVELUCY (3) NBC NEWS ® ABC NEWS O TIC TAC DOUGH 0® ®@ CBS NEWS CD RHODA 7:00 3) MACNEIL-LEHRER REPORT 0 ALL IN THE FAMILY 3)QD DAILY NUMBER O FACE THE MUSIC 33)® TIC TAC DOUGH CD HAPPY DAYS AGAIN ® MATCH GAME 7:01 ® TAKE ME UPTOTHE BALLPARK An outer space baseball promoter matches a sandlot team from Earth against his space All-Stars. ® P.M.
