Atherton Street (The Other Side of State College) 2 Realtors 34-8860 . ....... By GLENN KAUP Daily Collegian Sports Writer Most collegiate athletic teams would be ecstatic if they finished a season with four straight wins to compile a 17-8 season record. But to the softball team, it was nothing more than just another season. Especially after the Lady Lions were unable to attain the goal they had set at the beginning of the year receiving an invitation for Eastern regionals. The Lady Lions never got the chance at the playoffs after placing sixth in their division. "I guess that overall I am disappointed with the regular season," co-captain Jan Carlson said. "The overall record is pretty good, but it was disappointing that the team didn't make postseason playoffs. "The team played some tough competition at the beginning of the year (West Chester and Eastern champion Rutgers) and we started off bad. We had to come back the whole season and it proved costly in the Eastern invitations." Penn State coach Pat McTarsney, who resigned yesterday because of the amount of time coaching and teaching took up, also was slightly disappointed with the season. "I have mixed emotions about this season," Mc- Tarsney said. "I am very pleased with the team in terms of its athletic ability and attitude and their work on the game. I was also especially pleased with the amount of hitting that the team had this year. • SUMMER SUBLET: own room In a colorful, well-maintained apartment two blocks from campus. $9O/mo. We lost some games that we should not have and as a result we didn't get into the postseason playoffs." McTarsney said at the beginning of the year that the team had more talent than any previous Penn State softball team in the combination of hitters, pitchers and fielders. But during the season, the team was unable to play consistently. "It's very hard to find an exact reason for the in consistency," McTarsney said. "I think that the biggest problem this season in the fielding was the lack of concentration which resulted because of some mental errors. The team made errors where they should not have and dropped balls that they should not have. "Some instances the players looked up from the ball before they had full possession which resulted in errors. Other times the errors were caused by im complete follow throughs. Some of the errors could be blamed on inexperience." But the season didn't travel any, farther downhill after the Lady Lions got past their first three losses. "I think the high point of the season was when we beat Temple," shortstop Deb Malone said. "Another time was when we played good close games against Rutgers and just barely lost. But winning the final games was a nice way to finish off the season." McTarsney said the team played its best games of the season in the sweep of the Temple double-header, 1- AVAILABLE Immediately small one bedroom apt. in Parkway Plaza. The freshmen crop of center fielder Mary Ann Cremo, pitcher Brenda Frey, right fielder Tammy Yiehdorfer and second baseman Brenda Stauffer played a big part in the season while showing a lot of poise and consistency the entire season. Pitcher Rayne Yori said the team was able to come back in difficult situations because the players helped out whenever another player got in a bind. The softball team already is looking forward to next year. And they are already making plans on 'not missing Eastern regionals at the end of next season. "I think that we are going to do very well next year," Stauffer said. "Everyone who I have talked to is anxious for next year. We are going to make it at least to regionals if not win the regional championship." 4. The Sabres forced a fifth game in their National Hockey League semifinal series. The Sabres, in ending an 11-game playoff losing streak to the Islanders, withstood two goals each by Bob Bourne and Bob Nystrom. The result produced a Buffalo hope it could become the third team in playoff history to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games. The other teams to do it were the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1975 Islanders. It seemed the Sabres would never get the chance. Bourne sandwiched his eighth and ninth playoff goals a club record around a shorthanded tally by Buffalo's Don Luce to give New York a 2-1 lead after one period. Bryan Trottier assisted on both Bourne tallies, giving him 20 points this playoff and a club record. Seven doubles key Phils' comeback win PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Philles slammed seven doubles, including two by slump-ridden Pete Rose, as they made up a four-run first-inning deficit to beat the Atlanta Braves, 10-5, last night. The Phillies put the game away in the eighth when Mike Schmidt hit a bases loaded triple to complete a four RBI night, and scored when the relay throw went wild for an error by second baseman Jerry Royster. The Braves took advantage of an error by second baseman Ramon Aviles to score four unearned runs in the first, three on a bases-loaded double by Brian Asselstine who then tallied on Bruce Benedict's single. But Aviles and Phils starter Dick Ruthven, 2-2, survived their rocky starts. Atlanta starter Doyle Alexander, 0-2, was kayoed in a four-run third as Philadelphia rallied for its second straight triumph of the three-game series. PERSONAL JOB HUNTING?
