Today's segment is on the sport smedicine program at Penn State. 4 . 1 Everybody knows that Penn State has one of the top athletic programs in the country, but very few know about the excellence of the sportsmedicine • program. -The Nittany Lion athletic teams enjoy the luxury of - having some of [the best sportsmedicine facilities in the country. geThe UniverSity operates lour fully staffed training rooms and recently opened the Penn State Sports Medicine Center at• the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Before,an athlete can participate on a varsity' team at Penn State, he or she is ,subjected to a very thorough preseason ('testing and screening program. W. James Hochberg, the coordinator of the sportsmedicine . program at Penn State, said every athlete is thoroughly evaluated before stepping onto the playing field. "Before the season starts," Hochberg Paid, "each athlete fills, out a prepar ticipation medical form, which is •screened by the coaches to see if any of the players have problems now. Then we do a physical. examination." The examination includes strength, range of motion and flexibility tests. In ddition, football players and other (fir thletes in contact sports are given body and leg strength tests. "The biggest thing we try to do is' to pick up these weaknesses before the athletes get involved," Hochberg said. "If there is a problem, we try to come up with a way to strengthen or protect that Oea." Every year, all female athletes and all athletes who participate in contact sports are rechecked, Any problems are then referred to the team physicians. "I'd like to think that we do a• better job than anybody else," Hochberg said. liVe make sure the physicals get done." The treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries is an important part of the program, he said. "When a player gets hurt," Hochberg said, "he/she reports the injury to the athletic trainer. The trainer gives a preliminary exam, and if it's a minor psblem, administers first aid. • "But if there is a major problem," Hochberg added, "the athlete is im mediately referred to the team physician. Any extraordinary or emergency cases are sent to the sportsmedicine clinic at Hershey, he said. At the sportsmedicine clinic, specialists' in orthopaedic surgery, family and community medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, physical therapy, psychiatry, food and nutritional services and behavioral sciences take part in the multidisciplinary approach to provide sportsmedicine patient care. "The objectives," said Dr. Alexander Kalenak, director of the comprehensive sportsmedicine program and or thopaedic surgeon for the Nittany Lion athletic teams, "are to provide care and rehabilitation for the injured athlete, counseling in the prevention of injury and prescriptions for fitness and ac tivitiesfor athletes of all ages." After visiting the team physician, the athlete returns to the training room, where the athletic trainer begins a rehabilitation program. "The team physicians usually leave the decision (on how to rehabilitate the injury) up to the athletic trainer," Hochberg said. "Then, the trainer can use different modalities such as heat or ice to speed the recovery of the injured area." BUD sports injuries, which often take a long time to heal. "When the body is, ready to get better, it will," Hochberg said. "You can try to speed it along and help, but Mother Nature will determine when it is time to get better." John Powell, a certified athletic trainer at Penn State and coordinator of the National Athletic Injury/Illness Reporting System (NAIRS), said he also believes in the Mother Nature approach. "I've had athletes on ice treatments for a week with no reaction," Powell said. "Then I switched them over to heat, and pow, they responded." After an initial recovery period, the athlete is put on a strength and range of motion improvement program to restore the injured area. "Most of the things we do are pretty well standardized," Hochberg said. "To build strength, we can use free weights or Nautilus machines. To restore range of motion, we use a lot of stretching exercises." But even after completing strength and flexibility therapy, the athlete is still one step away from returning to action. "We give the athletes.,a performance test which incorporates the type of movements typical to the sport they participate in," Hochberg said. "Only then is the athlete ready to return.
